Although I have lived in Phoenix for many years I've done very little hiking in the Superstitions. A friend from work said that he does this hike every year and invited me to come along, and I'm glad that I did. Three of us arrived at the Peralta trailhead at about 8am. The lot was filling up but we were able to get one of the last spots. The overflow lot was empty so we would have been ok.

I figured up Route Scout on my phone and we went to the trailhead. I guess there are multiple trails from this spot and Route Scout would not shut up! I finally had to turn down the volume. It was cold when we started, but we warmed up quickly once we started hiking. We took the loop clockwise, and I'm glad we did. Seeing Weaver's Needle for the first time in reaching Fremont Pass was spectacular!

The views in all directions were awesome. The trail was steep in places, rocky in places and mostly both steep and rocky. We stopped frequently to enjoy the scenery because it was impossible to look around while walking (or at least very risky on that uneven terrain).

There were lots of people until Fremont Pass, then only a few. We met a couple of groups who were backpacking. Just past the half way point we stopped for lunch. By then the temperature warmed up and it was a perfect clear and sunny day with just enough of a breeze to keep us comfortable on the trail.

Then the endless climb on the return leg. Definitely a workout. There were a couple of spots where it was tricky to find the trail, but we managed to stay on it, or at least get back to it without much back tracking. My old legs were definitely feeling it as we got to the end. Finally we got a view of the parking lot and it was way down there. But the trail got us there quickly and steeply.

A very enjoyable day in the Supes!
