| partners | | I haven't been behind Coffee Flat Mountain in a while so this hike was overdue. The early clouds kept the sun off but it warmed up in the afternoon. Chris and Andy kept a steady pace and I got to relax in the shade a few times. Barkley Basin looks better with brittle bush brightening things up. The Whiskey Spring trail keeps getting a little better each time through. Red Tanks Trail was narrow but easy enough to navigate. The claw claw was present but avoidable.
We stopped for lunch on the Red Tanks Divide. After lunch it warmed up a bit but the breeze was nice. I stopped in the shade before Dripping Springs to let everyone regroup. As we started down Coffee Flat trail I was talking and not really watching. I saw something move and noticed the diamondback to my left. I think we both moved back at the same time.
The rest of the hike was uneventful. The section of Coffee Flat going through Barkley Basin has a variety of wildflowers. Brittle bush, globe mallow, lupine, Mexican poppies, fairy dusters and scorpion weed were all present. I passed the Reavis look-a-like again on the way out. He left in a white pickup. It was nice get out into the heart of the Supes. |
