On my last day of this trip to Utah, I decided to hike to Fish Lake Hightop (elevation of 11,633 feet and prominence of 4,153 feet), the highpoint of Sevier County.

This was the fifth Utah County highpoint that I bagged on this trip, and the 11th overall (out of 29). And if you must know, it is the 69th US county highpoint that I have summitted -- only 3,074 to go!

I decided to do the hike from Hancock Flat instead of the standard route from Pelican Canyon, which is near Fish Lake. The Hancock Flat route is about 1.5 miles shorter and has about 1/2 of the elevation gain. After doing a couple of strenuous hikes each of the prior 2 days, I was all for minimizing the difficulty of this hike.

The last 8.5 miles to where I parked are on a dirt road, but most any vehicle could drive it. A 4WD vehicle could continue on to about 1/4 mile or so from the summit.

I'd say that about 1/2 of the elevation gain on this hike was in the first 0.75 miles. After that, the route was relatively flat until about 1/4 mile or so from the summit, where you had to do some fun rock and boulder scrambling. There were a lot of van and camper sized boulders at the summit, which were fun to circumnavigate or climb. The highpoint was on top of one of the boulders, which required an easy class 3 move to get on top of.

Kids, and kids at heart, will enjoy walking around the summit of Fish Lake Hightop.

Even though it was a road walk, I enjoyed this hike. Most of the hike was along high alpine meadows, so there were some nice views to be had. The drive in went past a lot of aspen trees, so this one would be a good hike to do in late September or early October.
