| no partners | | I was driving through New Mexico and decided to bag Mount Powell (elevation of 8,748 feet and prominence of 1,468 feet). Mount Powell is off of I-40, about 30 miles east of Gallup.
I left I-40 at the metropolis of Thoreau, NM and went north on NM-371 for 10 miles, and then took the Mount Powell Road to the summit. Mount Powell Road is not paved, but I had no trouble driving to the summit in a rental Chevy Equinox. There was a gate about 1/2 mile from the summit, but it was open so I drove on up.
I parked up top and walked a short distance to the obvious highpoint. I found the benchmark and one reference mark. The highpoint was on top of a boulder near the reference mark, so I climbed up on the boulder and sat down for a minute or two.
The GPS track is from my walk from the car to the summit. Even though it was all of 0.2 miles and 25 feet of elevation gain, there was a class 2 climb to get the highpoint.
There is no real reason to do go atop Mount Powell unless you are in the area with nothing elae to do; however, it is a P1K peak and is the most prominent peak in McKinley County, New Mexico, both of which might be of interest to a few folks. |
