| no partners | | Flat Top Mountain (elevation of 10,620 feet and prominence of 5,370 feet) was on my peakbagging list and I decided to hike it today. Flat Top is the highpoint of the Oquirrh Mountains and it is one of 57 peaks in the continental US to have 5,000 feet or more of prominence.
With the high gas prices I rented a car instead of driving my Tacoma, which unfortunately meant that I had to park at the 2WD TH, which added some mileage and elevation gain to the hike. I walked on the forest road for about 2.5 miles, and then took a trail the rest of the way. The trail was overgrown in many places, but for the most part it was reasonably easy to follow.
The route goes through a combination of BLM land and private land. One of the private landowners had No Trespassing signs posted. However, I contacted him in advance and he kindly gave me written permission to hike on his property. He seems to routinely do this unless it is in hunting season.
This was a pretty tough hike. There were some steep sections, and terrain was not very friendly over the last 1.5 miles to the summit.
There were great views at the summit which made the effort worthwhile.
There were lots of aspen trees on the first 2-3 miles of the hike, so this one would be nice in late September I think. |
