Part of the adventure on this hike is getting to the trailhead -- we drove around 60 miles on dirt roads to get to our parking spot/campsite. Fortunately, the first 54 miles on dirt was on a road where we were able to drive 50-60 mph.
We could have driven farther on Granite Creek Road, but we found a good spot next to a creek so we decided to park and camp there.
An SUV with decent clearance could have driven another 1.4 miles and parked; a 4WD vehicle could have driven another mile past that.
We hiked on the road for about 2.4 miles to the 4WD parking area, and then took off on a trail. The trail was overgrown for a mile or so, and then got really steep in some places. There was a bit of deadfall to negotiate.
About 4.5 miles into the creek there was a creek crossing where we filtered some water, both on the ascent and the descent.
About 5 miles or so into the hike there is a large meadow, where we got our first good look at Ibapah Peak. At this point we had gained about 4,000 feet in elevation. We crossed the meadow and then made a steep off-trail ascent up to a ridgeline. We then followed the ridgeline for a bit and then traversed around a false peak to get below Ibapah Peak. Ibapah is a bit intimidating once we got a good look at it, but there was a good use trail up to the summit. The use trail generally was to the right of a ridgeline that goes to the summit. There were several switchbacks on the use trail, so while it was steep and slippery in places, it was not a bad climb. I would call it mostly class 1, with perhaps a bit of class 2.
Summit views were amazing, and I am glad that I did this hike.
Most people would want to drive farther up the road than we did, which would lop off some mileage and elevation gain. If you drove to the 4WD trailhead, I imagine that you'd be looking at something like an 11 mile hike with 4,800 feet of elevation gain. |
