| no partners | | I headed to SoMo, with rain chances in the high country for most of the areas I might have otherwise hiked this weekend. I started just after 5AM, and it was already 90° and humid before the sun came up. But at least that seemed to discourage most people from coming out--it was one of the quieter days I've seen at South Mountain.
As I started walking along the road toward the trailhead, four coyotes passed in front of me, and I saw another one a few miles into the hike, near Hidden Valley Tunnel. Later, I almost stepped on a small rattlesnake in the middle of the trail that blended in surprisingly well, then passed another on the way up Mormon Trail. The final tally was five coyotes and two rattlesnakes, plus I ran into an old friend I hadn't seen in a long time. It was just under 100° when I finished, but with the humidity, I could almost wring my shirt out. I'm already looking ahead to cooler days in a few months... |
