| no partners | | A quick juant down to the bridge from the Fish Creek Vista. I wanted to see how the road was looking and get a look at the boulder fall area that has kept the Apache Trail closed since 2019.
A nice cloudless sky greeted at the empty Fish Creek Vista lot. I started down the road and wasn't sure what to expect. I saw some water erosion heading down. Parts of the road have most certainly been flowing in the past. However, most of the road is in surprisingly decent shape.
I always thought the landslide area was further up the hill, but it's actually near the bottom of the hill, about 200-300 yards from the bridge. This area certainly experienced some serious damage. The rocks and boulders piled up block the path, but underneath, it's clear the road will need some major repairs. There is an easy bypass route along the west side of the road. I was expecting a little boulder hopping.
I made it to the bridge, hiked up a little to get a view of the canyon and cave and then started back up.
I flew my drone and got some video of the landslide area on the way back up.
An easy +3 mile r/t from the overlook. I will come back here in December when the colors change. I've also been eyeing the lower canyon towards Horse Mesa Dam. That looks very interesting. |
