| no partners | | My big plans to wake up early for the sunrise were dashed by my pesky business (darn customers giving me money so early in the day!). Oh well, I was able to unchain myself from my desk early and headed out to the Hieroglyphics Trailhead. I wanted to catch a sunset from Old Turks Head aka Peak 2777 aka the Wedding Cake. That's a lot of names for a little butte!
The parking lot was almost full when I arrived at 330pm. Once I got on the Lost Gold Mine Trail, I saw no other humans. Everyone was up at the petroglyphs.
I saw a route that @vanman posted that came in from the west side of the formation, so I loaded that one up. I've always come from the eastern side for this one. I guess I have been doing it wrong all these years. The western route to the top was very clear and cairned (and steep in some places). I didn't have to look at the route at all. I have my new way up to this one for sure.
The clouds were thick in the west, so I was convinced it would be a dud sunset. I stayed up top for a while and explored and then started down. As I descended, I could see Mr Sun might sneak out at the end. There was a little color right at sunset and then afterwards, some beautiful afterglow.
I saw one little tarantula on the way in and a steer on the way back. The only people I came across were coming back from the spring.
Perfect weather, a nice sunset (eventually) and some great views all along the way and up top. I love this area of the Supes! |
