DAY FOUR 7-28-2022 I got recruited for further transportation work driving the pickup to where the grain trucks were.  My cousin says, "it's only a little bit up north".  Well his "little bit" and mine are quite a bit different.  I assume some of you have heard of the "North Forty"; well that's where we went.  While out there we walked over to a tributary of Dead Indian Coulee that drains into the main coulee before arriving at the Marias (muh rye es) River a couple miles north.
On the drive back to the ranch the grasshoppers were very active and jumped right into the pickup for a ride.  I tried to film it but it's hard to do.  I had grasshoppers sitting on my knee and shoulder.  Needless to say, Brian got on the phone with the Spray Company and they were out spraying the next morning to save what was left of the crop.  I did see a Harris Hawk too; he had plenty to eat if he liked 'hoppers.

Cousin Brian finally drove the semi full of grain and dumped it at the leg.  I think it holds about 1200 bushels and can be unloaded in 15-20 minutes.  I filmed a little of it.  And once again, I helped cousin Connie prepare and clean up a very late harvest dinner.

DAY FIVE 7-29-2022 Connie and I had to go feed the chickens at the homestead as Kenny and Greta had to go somewhere. And those chickens provided us with some great fresh eggs so we were glad to do it. On the way we saw a deer with two fawns that I was able to get some movie and pics; and as we came on the road by the homestead there were more deer.    Chickens can be rather entertaining so I filmed some of that as well.  Then we had to return cousin Brad's phone as he left it at Brian's so we headed to my old place.  I always like going there.  Even though I only lived there for 5 years, it was a very memorable five years that I cherish almost every day.

When we got back we took the fresh huckleberries I had bot at West Glacier to make a huckleberry cake... and yes, I have that on film.  The cake was so good :D !  A ferocious ten minute wind storm blew through and, of course, I documented that too :stop: .  After the cake was in the oven, I went out for my SECOND HIKE.  This time I headed up the hill toward and behind the Bomb Shelter shop.  I had never been up on the top of the hill to the north.  There is a bigger corral system and of course, more farm equipment, new and old.  Brian's dad and my dad owned an International Harvester Dealership in Chester for a few years so there is a lot of that brand.  Rumor has it that this ownership caused a bit of a rift with my Aunt Marian.

My ultimate goal was to check out the old grainery elevator as it's a very cool looking structure despite its gradual crumbling into the earth.  I passed by some additional plows before reaching the elevator that I walked around, being mindful of rattlesnakes.  I caught it at just the right time as the sun was coming down so it made for a couple great pictures.  I then decided to walk over to the main grain leg (elevator) that they use now.  I passed by some additional equipment and squeezed through another barbed wire gate.  The gates are quite long here (due to taking equipment, mainly plows, through) so it's much easier to squeeze through then open and attempt to close it.

As I got close to the reservoir I spotted a Great Blue Heron and even got to see it fly around and re-land on the other side of the reservoir.  I watched it for a bit before passing through the elevator garage to the other side where I heard and saw a bunch of birds (probably red-wing blackbirds) land and fly around the power wires in the pink hue of a setting sun.  And as I started to head back I spotted a pheasant couple.  I've seen a singular pheasant before a few years ago but never a couple.  They were pretty far away so it was hard to get good pictures in fading light but I did manage to get some video.  On the way back I saw the Great Blue Heron hanging out at the reservoir.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
