The next morning, before I left for the ranch, I took the Whitefish River / City Loop walk. As I've mentioned before I lived here for a few years so it's nice to visit via these little hikes they now have. And you can't beat hiking from your house, along a river, over a viaduct past a railroad depot and rail yard to a lake and back with some variations that take you on a different track along the river. It's all paved and nicely manicured in various areas. It was warm up there this year so I'm sure lots of locals were taking advantage of hanging out in or near Whitefish River and Lake. Here is a six minute video of my trek. [ youtube video ]

As I was packing up I visited with the neighbor that I had visited with a week ago. She was a backpacker so was familiar with where I had been. But now, it was time to get to the ranch for the third part of my stay in Montana. I stopped at Browning for my Taco John's stop; I love their tacos. Taco John's was the taco franchise I grew up with so I still like to eat there when I can; there's just not that many stores. I took my taco bounty and headed for the other side of Browning on Highway 2 where there is an interpretive sign stop. I had my lunch and then got out to take pictures of the Rocky Mountains of Glacier National Park. It was a good clear day so I zoomed in and created some Panos so that I could ID the mountains. And here is the video I made from that: [ youtube video ] This video also includes the drive to the ranch from north of Fort Benton.

There was a storm to the west so I was trying to get some pictures of that along with the various farms in the area. I can't even imagine how many times my ancestors and now cousins have made this drive from Fort Benton that traverses some very long hills and mostly through wheat country with an occasional butte and if the sky is clear, views north to the Sweet Grass Hills near the Canadian border. Harvest was in full swing, a little early this year because of the lack of rain. It's a busy time to say the least. This year instead of turning left to the homestead I turned right to go to my cousin Brian's place where I would spend the next five days. I had other plans for those five days but since harvest began, I would be helping with that.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
