The day before this, Deb and I had biked around Mormon Lake. After the ride we'd stopped at Lake Mary, and chanced upon a couple of kayakers, one of whom has the same model of folding boat as mine, a 16-foot Oru Coast XT. He agreed to meet up with us the next day to paddle Mormon Lake.

Paddling Mormon Lake is not something you can do any day. Usually it doesn't have much water in it, but this year is different due to the very snowy winter. Even following the shoreline we generally had two to three feet under us. On this day, the snow was still very actively melting off of Mormon Mountain.

One of the photos shows a floating nest with a large egg. This likely was a Canada goose's nest that had been built on dry land, in the reeds, before the lake filled up. Once it broke loose the goose abandoned it. We saw the geese, plus we saw teal, other ducks (I've forgotten which kinds) and coots. I think I was told we also saw a small kind of grebe (not Clark's or Western). You can tell I'm not a great birder. People asked later if we saw any bald eagles. We didn't.
