One of them was the always enjoyable drive out to Coyote Canyon. This is sort of the gateway to some of the best stuff this fine state park has to offer. This winter was something else as you all know, and it featured an extended wildflower extravaganza in these parts. I decided to wait and visit when the crowds, flowers, and chilly weather was finished. But of course, yet another blustery, cool storm system blasted through while I was there. Fortunately, it was late enough in the season that it wasn't too bad (except for the wind). I did a short hike up this trail, as well as a little exploring at the nearby Desert Gardens. A cold front was working its way over the coastal mountains, but only light showers were noted on the leeward side and weren't a problem where I was.
If you are not familiar with Anza Borrego Desert State Park, then I highly recommend obtaining a copy of the book "Anza-Borrego Desert Region" by Lowell and Diana Lindsay. I think it is the best guide there is covering this region. It has a fold out map and the book is very detailed and presents a lot of history. I picked up a copy of the 6th edition at one of the nature stores in Borrego Springs last year, replacing an older one from 10 years ago. |
