Coming up from Tucson the wildflower show along the highways was in full swing. This was especially true along AZ 77 from around the Cooley Ranch Road area on to Globe. I had driven this road on March 8th and the flower action was just getting started. In the burn area on the east side of the Pinal Mountains there wasn't much, but now more than 3 weeks later, it's show on! Dropping down the hill to the junction with US 70 by Cutter, the roadsides and hills featured extensive areas of yellow/gold as far as you could see. Of course Peridot Mesa is part of this superbloom action as well. Yes, it was a very good day for this little road trip.
The drive from Globe to the lake was fun as usual. It made me happy to see Roosevelt full again. I stopped at the viewpoint by the dam for some photos, then headed to my other planned destination for the day. It wasn't a madhouse on the roads like it will be later on when the heat sets in, but there were a lot of motorcycle groups encountered from Globe on. I like driving in on FR 445 (Three Bar Rd) when in the lake area, since it doesn't seem to get the traffic other roads do. It was mellow today with a few ATV riders and one other truck. My goal was to get to the Big Oak Flat parking area by the Oak Flat Trail #123. That turned out to be no problem, even at the Rock Creek crossing. For me it is a sentimental spot back in there, as my first two ascents of Browns Peak on successive weekends in the spring of 1970, were staged from Big Oak Flat. As expected there was still good flow in Rock Creek. I also went down to Three Bar Cabin and the Chillicut Trail #132 TH, before calling it a day enjoying the waning late afternoon light, and heading back to Tucson. |
