| no partners | | After leaving the Picacho Peak area at Las Cruces, I headed back to Deming on 1-10, then took the Hatch cutoff (NM 26) to Nutt. From there it was on NM 27 to the Lake Valley historical site, known for one of the richest silver strikes of them all (Bridal Chamber). Needless to say, this became an instant boom town in the middle of nowhere. I had visited this ghost town back in 2011, so since I had some other plans in the area, thought I would stop for a look around. Looks like the BLM is doing a good job taking care of the site, with evidence of new restoration efforts and a nice job upgrading the school building/historical exhibit. I didn't have time this trip to check that out, since I still had a lot of miles to cover, but I plan on doing that someday.

There are some good You Tube videos about Lake Valley. One of my favorites is by Sightseeing Sally.
From Lake Valley I continued on to Hillsboro and reached NM 152, one of my favorite drives in the state. It was discovered the structural integrity of this road was in jeapardy just east of Emory Pass, and it was closed March 20th from San Lorenzo all the way to Hillsboro so repairs could be made. It had just been reopened days before my trip, so I wanted to drive it and check it out. Everything looked fine as I continued on to my ultimate destination for the day: City of Rocks. Stopped at Blake's Lotaburger in Bayard and purchased a green chile cheeseburger meal to enjoy when I reached camp, not many more miles down the road (US 180/NM 61). Turned out to be a busy and fine day! |
