You'll go a short distance on the trail before turning left and starting up the hill. The trail switchbacks uphill the first .5 mile and then along the ridge to the 1.1 mile mark. At this point you can continue on the Santa Ysabel Loop trail or take the Coast to Crest trail further uphill. I continued on the Santa Ysabel Loop trail.
At 1.4 miles you'll see a small spring on the left. Continue through an open meadow with oaks. The junction with the Coast to Crest loop is at about 1.5 miles. Shortly thereafter at about 2 miles you'll encounter a fairly steep descent to the 2.5 mile mark. I was glad I'd chosen to hike in a counterclockwise direction as this would have been a steep ascent. From 2.5 miles the trail flattens out and winds back to the Nature Center, roughly paralleling CA Highway 79.
Weather was high fog with temperature in the 60s. Trail was in good condition despite overnight rain.
If you're fortunate you'll see hawks, eagles, bobcats, coyotes or (rarely) mountain lions.
Total distance 3.82 miles, time 1:45.
Nature Center hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday-Sunday 9am-7pm. Center is located about .5 mile west of Santa Ysabel on CA Hwy. 79. |
