While doing the standard survey work before building a major canal, they had found a Hohokam site which appeared to be a center of shell jewelry making. Extensive excavations were done, a big report was written, the site reburied, and the canal built. Enough detail was in the report that I had a pretty good idea where it was, so I headed down south of Maricopa to see what I could see.
Flat desert with scattered bushes and I did find some shell pieces and lots of pottery. The game for the day was to find painted Hohokam red-on-buff but I only found a few sherds - it was mostly plain.
There was a second nearby related site I also wanted to check out but it had several prominent keep out signs... oh well.
