This one's been on my wish list for 11 years. I had no plans for the day, and the weather was conducive, so why not? I parked at the intersection of 87th Ave and W. Saddle Mountain Rd. I set a waypoint on my GPS track for a better spot to park.
The first 2 miles of this hike follow burro trails, in and out of a wash with relative ease.
The path I took out of the wash was not the best, walking on a constant barrage of volcanic footballs to the saddle. My way into the wash was also not optimum—steep and loose.
I found the crash site and looked around for a bit. It seemed to me that there were fewer items at the site than I'd seen in older photos. The most impressive item left was the 9-cylinder rotary engine.
Next up was a 0.5-mile walk to the shore of the lake.
I decided to try a different route back. I climbed up to hit the ridgeline. I found this to be much faster travel along the tops rather than walking through the washes. Still rocky, but better. The theme of the day was to follow the burro trails whenever possible. I did see 2 different herds and was surprised I hadn't seen more with all the sign out there.
I was very thankful for the cloud cover; otherwise, it could have been kind of warm. The breeze was nice also.
Five warbirds stayed around the lake for an hour or so, climbing, diving, and flying in different formations. |
