On our return trip to Lubbock (Land of no hiking) we stopped off at Chiricahua National Monument to hike the Ed Riggs-Sarah Deming-Echo Canyon Loop. We have done this before but it is such a nice hike we decided to do it again. Arrived at the park just after 7 and were just about the only people here, a few campers and one other car at the trail head.

Headed out on the Ed Riggs Trail then on to Mushroom Rock Trail. Took a side trip out to Inspiration point from the Mushroom Rock trail. Great views super clear skies and good visibility. Could see Rincon Mountains, snowcapped Mount Graham and of course the Chiricahua’s. Played around with my camera and the remote Yifi connection with my phone, easier to just set the camera on delay and push the button and run to get in the photo. After screwing around with the camera remote for some time we headed over to the Heart of rocks loop, probably the best area of this hike second only to the Echo Canyon Trail.

No sense describing the Heart of rocks loop you just have to see it for yourself. Lots of interesting rock formations, some named some you make up your own. It was along this section of the hike that I noticed the shadows on the ground had a funny shape and then I realized there was an eclipse happening today, forgot all about that.

We took our lunch break down in Rhyolite Canyon just prior to the junction with the Echo Canyon Trail. A light flow of water in the canyon along Echo Canyon. This is such an interesting section of the hike you really don’t notice that you have quite a bit of AEG. We finished this hike about 3:00 and had to head out because were staying in Portal that night and it is 24 miles over a dirt road to get there and the Portal Lodge closes at 6:30. This is the only place to eat in Portal also. Luckily the road had no traffic so we made good time.
