Short hike in Cienega Creek again, this time from Pantano Station. We hiked downstream this time to about the same area we hiked to a couple days ago. The creek starts out dry for the first couple 100 yards then water resurfaces and stays above ground the rest of the way. Easier to avoid getting your feet wet this time as we managed to find rocks or logs to get across. Still a lot of stream crossings as one side of the creek chokes out due to brush. The 15 to 20 foot dirt cliffs with the mesquite trees hanging on with their roots is quite impressive. According to eye witness accounts these cliffs were not here in the late 1800’s all this down cutting happened in the last 130 years. I don’t know if I buy that cattle grazing caused this, possibly down dropping of the valley, maybe the 1887 earthquake just south of the border that affected Sabino Canyon. If all else fails we can blame it on global cooling oh now it’s warming no change. Anyway interesting phenomenon that occurred.
Saw a lot of white tail deer and watched a herd of Javelina and their young for quite a while as they did not see us. We headed back via the train track thinking it would be easier and once on the track it was. The half mile to the track was through thick mesquite groves although dormant then a section of 5 foot high grass (also dormant) then a cholla forest not dormant. Once at the track we were met by a train heading east, we stopped and took photos the engineer waved and blew his horn. The 2 mile walk along the track was fairly easy. On our way out we drove across the track and another train was just rounding the corner going west. I thought this was an east bound track and the one just to the north a west bound, guess not. All the time walking the track I kept looking back for east bound trains didn’t expect a west bound. Oh well it’s not like they can sneak up on you.
