| partners | | It had been a couple of years since I hiked Tony's Backyard to the ranch and with Andy not having done it before, we decided Black Friday would be the day. Tony's Backyard is the 'back way' to the ranch/cabin area. Rough and steep drive up 342 to the parking area where the wind was howling as we headed down to the creekbed. Once down in the creek bed, we made a quick stop at the corral area and continued. It's pretty brushy at the start, there is some catclaw but it's not horrible. Made it to the completely dry rock section, every other time I've been here there was water. After climbing down the waterfall bypass the canyon tightens up and gets brushy, with most of it being the non-thorny stuff. After that, the boulders get bigger for a small section then the canyon opens up and sits under a canopy of trees, typical of Haunted Canyon. Made it to the ranch area, where the SALT team had replaced some of the roofing and put in new windows, however, the back side of the cabin is still in pretty poor shape. After a quick snack at the cabin, it was an uneventful hike back out to the truck. We did try the old horse trail up on the ridge but ran into a wall of Manzanita and quickly bailed back to the creek. This hike, while not particularly long makes you work for it a bit with the creek and brush, but it's always worth it with the awesome scenery. Thanks, Andy for joining me. |
