| no partners | | I had another hike planned, but last minute changed my mind and decided on Tony's Backyard. 650 is a nice freeway, I think I hit 35mph a couple times. 342 is the exact opposite. Steep, washed out mess and I'm not sure I'll drive that portion again as I'm not a fan of being on three wheels for most of the way. Parked at the designated area, got out and the winds were insane; if I had to guess I would say 30-40 mph easily, tons of dust blowing everywhere. For a half a second I nearly got back into the truck and left, however, I was hopeful it would die down in the canyon which it did. Headed down the steep old road and stopped at the corral for a couple pics and into the creek I went. This was the first time I've hiked the backyard with water in the creek, it was actually there nearly the entire way. The water and the additional dead fall added another element and made the pace extremely slow. Got to the ranch and came across a couple cowboys on horseback with a pack of dogs (kitty hunting maybe?) Stopped and chatted with them for a few, they were heading up to Kennedy Spring as there was some old wagon road that is near there they were looking for. After they left, I had the ranch to myself, saw no one else the rest of the day. After a quick lunch I headed downstream to try and locate the skull cave. I know the area it's in but after walking the creek for a good 30 minutes I was not able to find it. Gave up and started back. About half way back my legs were starting to feel it so I gave up trying to keep my feet dry and just walked through it. The good thing was it was less effort, the bad thing was I couldn't feel my feet after a bit. Even though I've hiked this area before, I was still an idiot and wore shorts and paid the price dearly. Manzanita, Holly and catclaw all feel awesome. lol |
