| partners | | After refereeing a flag football tournament all day Saturday, I wanted an easier hike on Sunday so I could still get out before it gets too hot. I also had some intel on a cave I wanted to check out so headed up 287A to the Miles TH. No vehicles at Miles when we started around 8:30. We made our way through the grassy meadow and headed down the Bull Basin Trail. From there we made a right at the junction and headed up the Rock Creek Trail. The Rock Creek Trail has been decommissioned for over 20 years but is in pretty good shape as there is a well-carried trail the entire way. There are a couple of brushy spots but it's very minimal with the catclaw off trail. Made a stop at the completely dry waterfall (as expected) and continued. Our next stop was at the 105-year-old Y Bar B wood corral. Took a short break there and continued, going all the way except the last half mile when the trail started climbing to 650 before taking a break for lunch and heading back. Uneventful hike back as there was one vehicle at the TH, however, we did not see anyone all day. This is one of the few areas in the Superstitions that has not burned recently, it is a beautiful area lined with huge Arizona Cypress and Sycamore trees. On the drive out we stopped to look for a cave I had some info on. I know the general vicinity but we spent 45 minutes climbing and bushwhacking and were not able to find the entrance. |
