| no partners | | First full family hike we've done in as long as I can remember. Both kids are in college now and one is no longer a teenager . The early wakeup is met with the same teenage exuberance, but once we're out a mile or so on the trail, the moods start to improve.
Took the Second Water Trail to the first horse trail junction and headed down towards Hackberry Spring and then up the hill. Just before our ascent we saw a small herd of deer, at least 3, maybe 4 or more. Almost missed the junction for the trail to the Clapp Mine as it's pretty faint and right next to where the Hackberry Spring Trail makes a hard right turn.
Got to the mine and this time I packed my headlamp so I went inside a bit. It's really much warmer in there than outside in the shade, which was probably lower 50s. This seemed in contrast with the Lava River Tube in Flag where it's much cooler inside. I didn't go too far in because I've seen other posts where there are bats further back. also saw some mice scat piles and a snakeskin, so I was was good to explore as much as I did. Natasha followed me in but Radmila and Dmitri wanted nothing to do with it.
On the way back we made a loop of it heading up to Garden Valley and checked out the Indian ruin. Still lots of sherds left out for people to easily find, one was really big. It's interesting how busy this trail is but the majority of people who walk by this have no idea.
Made it back to the lot and stopped for lunch on the way home, followed by an afternoon powernap by everyone. Saw quite a bit for a short hike, turned out very nice. Cruising into Xmas time. |
