| no partners | | Looks like part of the Las Lomitas Trail (or some other lower trails) have been closed and abandoned. There's a lot of construction in that area so it's not clear if this will be rebuilt/rerouted, or just completely abandoned. Either way, no one told me and I had a loop hike planned, so I casually ignored the signs, rocks, sticks, boulders, etc, until I got to the Holbert Trail.
For the entire ascent on the Holbert, I was in the shade, which was very helpful. By the time I was in the sun, the Holbert had levelled out. Took the National Trail westbound to the Kiwanis and then headed back to the car on the Las Lomitas.
The weather was cooler in Phoenix than it was in Cave Creek the day before. The shade along the Holbert and then parts of the National Trail seemed to help that, but even once I was in the sun on the Kiwanis trail it wasn't too hot. Saw a coyote along the Kiwanis Trail.
Pretty heavy foot traffic along the Holbert Trail, but then only intermittent everywhere else. My feet were hurting from the rocky terrain the week before and they were tender along some of the rocky sections on this hike, but nothing too bad. There was some kind of biker convention in the parking lot at the bottom with tents, promotions, etc. |
