I love canyons and this one was pretty sweet!

We left the valley around 7:30, drove to Sycamore Canyon Trail #40, hiked for a few hours, met up with Tim, Scott, and Brian at the Cow Palace in Arivaca for a 4:30 dinner and drove to our campsite to get a little sleep before our big Babo climb. This was sort of just a last minute filler hike because I didn't want to do Keystone Peak with the young guys. It turned out to be a great hike selection. Thanks Letty for the photos and the info.

It was a great day in another beautiful Arizona canyon. This was my first hike with Nestor, a friend from the AMC climbing classes. It was a lot of fun exploring this canyon with him. He enjoyed doing a little free climbing up some of the tall rock towers along our route, in fact, every time I stopped to take a picture he was off climbing something, I'd have to look around the canyon walls to find him. I've never really seen anyone quite so comfortable on the rocks.

The springs were flowing and everything was really starting to green up. The pools of water were plentiful and refreshing although probably a little to cool to enjoy. I had the brilliant idea of swimming through one gorgeous pool that was really inviting......unfortunately it turned out to be a really bad idea. Water temperature that is tolerable to the foot feels a lot different when your whole body is in it! As soon as I was in up to my neck I was so cold I almost couldn't move....it certainly took my breath away. I managed to get to the edge of the pool and pulled myself out before I turned blue. The canyon was so sweet it was hard to turn around and head out but we did after a few miles.

We had some surprising encounters with Border Patrol and 8 individuals carrying large packs covered in burlap sacks while on the hike and in the canyon. Apparently this canyon gets "a lot of traffic" and has an activation sensor a couple of miles in....and I can see why!

This canyon was a relaxing stroll that made for a great pre-Babo trip and one I'd like to do again if I'm in the area.
