I went back to Skull Mesa on Sunday. I took the shorter approach to the Mesa this time and then descended off of the western slopes of the mesa towards the Chalk Canyon area and the Cave Creek Trail. A little steep near the top, but manageable. A light flow in Cave Creek. A dry crossing is possible with some light rock hopping. I did not see anyone all day until I got back to within about a mile of the trailhead. The trailhead seemed quiet for a Sunday, maybe the five dollar entry fee is scaring people away.
