| partners | | Left the valley at 6a to head up to the Pinal Campground in hopes of cooler hiking weather. Gassed up in Globe and saved 80 cents a gallon, yippee! The road up was winding and long, but in very good shape. Only saw a few cars on the way up, but we saw people at every campground we came to. Everyone wants to beat the heat!
We arrived at Pinal Campground to a glorious 52F -yippee!! We jumped onto the Pineline trail (forest service sign says pineline 193, Haz says pipeline 193, oops!) which was running parallel below the campground. This area was burned and sad, but there were some nice views off the ridge. We were only on this trail for a minute then we turned off onto Middle trail in order to pick up 6 shooter. Nothing much to say about middle trail. Nice trees, no burned areas, but some big downed trees blocking the trail that need to be removed. Nothing major, we just climbed over them.
We arrived at 6 shooter and headed down. This is the only small section of 6 shooter that I haven't done previously as we didn't feel like climbing up just to go right back down when we did a loop with telephone. This time we were just wandering around as I am still gimpy with hip woes. We went down to the junction with telephone and enjoyed some time next to the creek. The spring box was completely full. After a snack, we climbed back up 6 shooter to Ferndell. The fenced off pump (?) area was making pump sounds that are easily heard from the trail.
We headed off along Ferndell to see the towers. There are some good views of Globe down below on the way. Just before the end of the trail at the towers, there are some fun very large boulders around the trail that are very scenic. We looked around the towers and the giant fenced cattle area for a few minutes, and then headed back on the trail to avoid a road walk. This time, we took the spur up to the campground (upper Pinal). All sites full. We took the road down to catch the middle trail back towards the car.
The temperatures were nice, though it still seemed hot in the sun. Also: SO MANY BUGS!! Part of the hike, I put my bandana over my face to avoid breathing them in. Yuck. Next time: DEET! S had picaradin, but they were undeterred in their hassling! Despite hordes of pesky gnats, it was a enjoyable few hours walking around on the mountain!
The drive down was uneventful. More traffic (all the campers departing, plus a number of trucks with mountain bikes), but nothing too horrible. Upon reaching Globe, we decided to get Mexican food before our drive back to the valley. We landed up at La Casita which was delicious! |
