We were able to get together for another foursome hike. Ambika and I had done part of this in January. We met at Desert Arroyo Park to merge into Tonto 3 for the ride to the Park. We parked at Wind Cave TH which was packed as usual. Fortunately, we were not going the same direction as everyone else and headed on down the Pass Mountain Trail.

Everything in the desert was looking fabulous and we even heard a Golden Thrasher singing a very soulful song. I helped to ID some cactus as we continued our way south and then east through some little washes. There had been some trailwork done here and there. We saw some hikers and a few bikers. At the Cats Peak junction, there was a bench there. I am having extreme left hip pain that sometimes shoots down my leg. Mia has dealt with this type of pain so she pulled my leg, literally. It provided enough relief that I could continue hiking. It's usually my right hip that gives me problems.

We headed up to the pass clockwise, paused at the bench for leg pulling and then headed up the little hill to the right peak. Last time, Ambika and I went to the left peak (west). We hung out for a few minutes. From here I could see where the Blevins Trail was so we headed back down and went south to hook up with Blevins. I was hoping to find the playgrounds. The trails in this park are pretty nice and this one even labeled the washes we went through. There is a small cholla forest you go by so I got the girls together for a photo.

We encountered the NoSo Trail. What a great name. Reminds me of MonIda Pass (Montana/Idaho) name. We took the trail north bound and ended up at the HUGE Blevins campground. We took a break here for some leg pulling again. This provided great relief as I was able to hike the rest of the way with no pain. I am going to take some mobility/stretch classes at EOS to see if that will rectify this sudden issue that I've had the last two weeks. It was a great hike as we all enjoy the desert; especially this time of year.

We headed over to Mr. Brew's Taphouse on Brown. The Mac and Cheese selections are numerous and mine was great, though a tad spicy for me. They have a fun selection of beer. I had White Chocolate Candy Cane Wheat beer :) . When we got back to Desert Arroyo Park, there were some folks flying a few different model airplanes, so we got to enjoy that before we headed to our respective homes across the Valley.

Got out for a quick Sunday morning hike close to home in Usery. From Area 10 I hiked a loop with Blevins, Chainfruit, Lost Sheep, Blevins, Levee, Spillway, Meridian out and back, and Blevins back to the lot.

Started before the sun hit the horizon, it was cool but not chilly. Sun warmed it up without getting hot. The saguaros were noticeably thicker and swollen from the recent rain. My legs were still a bit stiff from the longer hike the day before, but it felt good to stretch them out and keep moving the next day. No wildlife spotted, just the usual hikers and bikers. Spotted one hiker near the top of one of the Cat Peaks. He sat there for a few minutes then made his way down.

1st trip
Decided to go deep into MAGA territory (north Pinal County) on the third day of the silly shutdown to complete two pleasant hikes for ~$175 backpay each.
I guess I’m a professional climber/hiker again…

1. [ Peak 3004 Loop - Goldfield Mtns ]
Overcast ascent up to the Bulldog Saddle via the Meridian Interpretive Trail (on accident, it was dark). Then west from the saddle up and across the ridgeline to 3004 or is it 3005? In the summit log, I dedicated this peak hike to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in honor of 1A. Poor Nexstar and Sinclair folded like cheap suits when they realized they liked making money more than supporting the U.S. Constitution. A short berserker descent NW to link back up with the loop and back down Pass Mountain #282 to the Meridian TH. Near the parking area, an odd guy was audibly listening to I Shot The Sheriff while letting his young pet dusky hawk hunt for rabbit. Apparently, his bird was successful and he thought celebrating with a random stranger was in order. The whole scene just seemed weird. Next time I’ll bring my pet cougar.

2. [ Cat Peaks Loop ]
Sunny and warmer start west over to the Cat Peaks area, passing a much slower Tortoise_Hiker en route (not the HAZ Rocks! one). Perhaps South Cat was first and North Cat was second, each peak dedicated respectively to Jeffries and Schumer because the Affordable Care Act subsidies are worthy. Just a bit of waxing nostalgically about McCain and the skinny repeal failure of 2017. I miss ol’ John. Evidently, I’m not the only one visiting this area who’s trying to save the world. : wink :

Started from the Meridian TH that's about a half mile south of the Meridian/Bulldog Pass TH at the very end of Merdian Road, getting on the flat and easy trails right away. Made a big loop of Meridian, Blevins, Chainfruit, Lost Sheep, Moon Rock, Channel, Noso and back to Blevins and Meridian. I had just a little bit of shade when I started as the sun hadn't quite hit the horizon yet. By the end it was getting hot as it does this time of year. The last 2 miles when I got to the benches in the park I stretched my legs out on them as my legs were feeling a little stiff once I hit the 8 mile mark.

Lots of hikers and bikers seen, fewer as the morning wore on. No wildlife spotted, but I did see a track from a snake across the Meridian Trail on my way back, so I guess I just missed a diamondback at some point. Finished up just before 10am.

Started from the Meridian TH and hiked westbound into Usery with some shade at first and then the sun on my back rather than in my eyes. Took the Pass Mountain Loop Trail over to Blevins, where I soon saw a D-back sunning itself on the trail not bothered by me. I gave it wide berth and moved on.

Hiked the Vista Trail and took half of the Merkle loop back to Blevins, then took that and Meridian over to Cat Peaks Traill and headed back on the Pass Mountain Loop Trail. I hiked the Meridian Interpretive Trail by there to get an extra half mile in and make it a respectable 8 miles for the day, all before 9:30am. Got off the trails before the heat started to kick in.

More hikers than bikers, but traffic overall was pretty light. The D-back was the highlight of the morning. Meridian lot was surprisingly full when I got there before 6am and empty when I got back.

A quick loop in the Southern Usery area this morning. I parked at the Crismon/McKellips TH and made a clockwise loop starting at the Channel Trail, connecting to the Blevins Trail and then taking the Spillway Trail back to the Channel Trail.

I had a couple of goals set for this hike. Get out and take some pictures of the saguaro blooms and exercise my ailing hip. I accomplished both.

Lots of mountain bikers out this morning. A few trail runners and hikers as well. Very pleasant at the start and I finished up before it got hot. The trails were the expected flat and groomed. That’s just what I needed.

The blooms this year are not bad. Pretty good compared to other flowers this “spring”. The lack of rain didn’t seem to bother the saguaros as many/most of them had some sort of flowers blooming, already bloomed or about to bloom.

Baby steps for my journey back to healthy. I gave hiking a 2 week rest and started PT with the ortho docs. I will be back to abusing my joints on the crazy ones in no time.

Sunday morning lazy hike. hit areas I haven't done in few years. Started on Chainfruit up to the visitor center, hit the 2 trails to the campgrounds along the way. The one just ended at the campground but I have an old track with a loop somewhere there, may have to go back one day to find it again.

Hit Desert Hawk by the Visitor Center then headed south on chainfruit and Lost Sheep, then took the side trails to the subdivisions and then headed over to finish up on Merkle. Got my shot of the day on Merkle of the hummingbird on top of a saguaro.

Weather was nice. Air seemed a bit hazy, couldn't see any of Mt Lemmon, which you usually can in this area. Traffic on the trails wasn't too bad.

After the deathmarch slog from the day before, I just wanted to do something easy and laid back. Went over to Usery Park (short drive) and hit some trails I haven't done in a few years there. Started on Blevins, and did a loop with Amigos Wash, Channel Trail, Moon Rock, Lost Sheep and Chainfruit trails back to the Area 10 lot.

It was cool at the start because the sun hadn't hit the horizon. Then when I was in Amigos Wash it was cool again because of the shade and because it's usually cooler in washes in the mornings.

Nice to get a few miles in just after a huge hike the day before. my legs were stiff but not too bad. I felt it more by the end of the hike and decided that was enough for the weekend. The smooth and level trails here were a nice respite from the last part of the hike the day before. Got many distant views of Mt. Lemmon just after having been there. didn't see any wildlife other than birds and rodents, but heard the usual coyote packs howling in the morning as the sun rose.

Started from Area 10 and hiked Blevins to Cat Peaks, Cat Peaks Pass, off trail to the two shorter peaks, Nighthawk Wash, Channel Trail, and Crismon Wash back to Area 10. Legs were still stiff from the hike the day before, but not too bad. I hiked slower in general but even more so along the peaks. It's officially off trail, but there are trails up there to the peaks. nice to check those out. Typical foot traffic was out, not too bad. a few bikers but not many.

Stayed close to home because of the plans for this weekend. Started from Area 10 in Usery and took Blevins, Chain Fruit, Talon, then some unmarked biker trails at the north end of Talon, Pass Mt. Loop, Talon, Lost Sheep, Moon Rock, and Blevins again back to the TH. Saw a couple hawks early on. At the very start a herd of coyotes started howling for a bit. Typical mix of hikers and bikers on the trail, mostly bikers. Weather got a little warm, but not hot. At the north end with the unmarked trails I hiked one that I hadn't hiked before, which I always like.

Wally and I hit the trail early to beat the heat. We figured we could get in a couple hours before it got hot. 🥵 Starting from the Crismon parking area. We did the Blevins Loop with Cat Peaks Loop added in there. It was good to get in a leg stretcher and catch up with Wally! Thanks Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!! 🪨

Early morning hike with Denny to beat the heat. No bad if you start hiking in the dark and finish by 7am.

Found the trailhead closest to home at McKellips & Crismon. About ten vehicles already there at 5:30am but there's plenty of parking. Saw several hikers and bikers along the way. The trail is wide and flat so easy hiling unless you opt to hike one of the sandy wash trails. Saw a few Harris hawks and an empty raptor nest. The temps were pleasant early so I finished just after 7 am while it was still nice.

Lazy Sunday morning hike. Started just after 6:30am. Took Dmitri with me out for this one. We stayed on the level trails so it was pleasantly easy. After the steep hike the day before, I was very pleased to have absolutely no soreness in my legs at all :y: .

Saw some owls on the Cat Peaks and got a good shot of one. Saw a hawk on a saguaro just after that. Nothing else really to speak of. Finished up before 10am and got over 8 miles in, which I was pretty happy with. Got a pizza for lunch and took an afternoon nap on the couch (kind of) watching the Pirates lose. Weather was still nice, the real heat hasn't hit yet, plus our early start helped.

Another Sunday morning hike close to home in lieu of jogging. the 9 miles I got made it 31 for the weekend, pretty good. Kept it kind of level after the marathon the day before.

from Area 10 I took Blevins to Meridian, County line and Ruidoso, then went into the equestrian trail for a bit before turning around. Took Noso on the way back to mix it up a bit and not do a total out and back.

No wildlife seen, just hikers, bikers, and trail runners. Sunny and not too hot the whole time.

After the hike up to Ord the day before, I was expecting to be pretty sore the next morning. To my surprise, when I got out of bed, I had no limp or soreness. I got a bit of a late start since we had guests the night before. I had the intention to get to the Wind Cave, but with the late start and taking a roundabout route of 2 miles before I got the Wind Cave Trail, it was 10am and I still had nearly a half mile to go. I didn't want to be out past noon so I bailed. I was wanting to get 1000' AEG and ended up with 800, so I wasn't all that disappointed. The morining rain storms passed thru so it was raining on and off the entire time. Low clouds made for some interesting pics.
