Took advantage of cloud cover to enjoy a morning jaunt in the desert. Saw a benchmark on the map and went over to look for it. I was a little surprised to find it intact. Headed down Hidden Valley all the way for the first time in a hot minute. Always a pleasure in there.

I met Linda at San Gabriel for an early start. I hadn’t done this one for awhile and I ain’t getting any younger…🙄😁. Trails were in pretty good shape. We only saw a handful of hikers, couple of dogs, couple of joggers and one ranger. Nice workout with great weather and company. Thanks for the hike, Linda!
Like HAZ, you rock!!
My aeg was higher so I split the difference. 🤷‍♂️

Met Denny at San Gabriel for an early workout hike. West on Desert Classic to Young Man. Headed uphill, catching a nice sunrise along the way. Dropped into Hidden Valley near the tunnel. East on National, then up to San Gabriel Ridge to finish the loop. Nice temps and breeze, some clouds. Didn’t see anybody else until we were finishing National. As always, good to hike and chat with Denny!

Short loop after work. Cool and cloudy. Actually wore long sleeves! Sunset fizzled but moonrise was exceptional. If only this weather lasted all year.

Another perfect afternoon I couldn't pass up. Hadn't been on a couple of these in a hot minute.

The crosses in Hidden Valley are gone, but a new on has been placed, while what might be one of the old ones is laying down under an overhang. Odd stuff.

San Gabriel Ridge is now called Guadalupe Perimeter. Huh.

Joined Linda for another nice South Mountain hike. She gave me a 5 minute head start but was caught up in no time. 😁 Didn’t see a lot of people today. Did see a roadrunner that didn’t like us disturbing his breakfast. Trails, weather and company were all great today! Thanks for the hike Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!

Good workout hike with Denny. Up San Gabriel Ridge, then Mormon Loop, Hidden Valley, and National. Nice breeze most of the way, but it did feel a little warm getting back over to San Gabriel to finish. Not many people out. Saw one roadrunner, who was showing off a bit. Fun hike, and good conversation, always great to get a hike in with Denny!

My friend Kyle was in town and we met up with Karina for an evening stroll in the Souths. Some colors were on display. We went down Pima for to avoid the peoples, and neither of them had been that way before. The burseras are raging after the winter rains.

I haven't been able to get out the past couple of weekends, due to work commitments, so I was looking forward to stretching the legs on the trail this weekend. I didn't have anything flashy planned, so just hit up the convenient South Mountain. Started at the San Gabriel Ridge TH--a first for me. Not too many cars there when I arrived around 6:45 am.

I didn't have a particular agenda, and ended up heading along the Guadalupe Ridge and then descending cross-country to Fat Mans Pass. After that, I off-trailed it to a couple of high points that looked interesting. Then descended to connect with the Mormon Trail and back through Hidden Valley. I took National east, and then jumped back up on the ridgeline via the last part of the San Gabriel Ridge trail. I followed the ridge all the way to the Pima TH, which was absolutely packed, and I was reminded why I avoid starting at that location.

I headed back up the National trail west and then climbed over the ridgeline again via Beverly Canyon trail and took the Desert Classic back to my starting point.

A lot of high tech, electric-assisted mountain bikes on the trail.

The forecast was looking promising last night so I set an early alarm hoping for some overnight rain cooled air, clouds, and maybe some flowing water.

The storm was in full swing when I woke up and heading out into the electrically charged atmosphere was not looking smart so I watched the radar and stream gauges for an hour or so until the main dynamics passed to the west and then I headed out.

The ranger had just opened the gate and the thick overcast kept dawn's early light from doing much. A pleasant rain continued to fall and some remnant flashes of lightning rippled across the sky.

There must have been some kind of dog event before I started as the muddy trail was covered with canine footprints! ;)

Despite the rain and pleasantry of the morning, there was no surface water flowing so I stuck to the main trail. Climbing out of the wash provided a welcome cool breeze and relief from the more stagnant and humid air in the canyon bottom. This led me to adjust my plan of going down Pima Wash and instead headed up to the ridge.

Along the way I passed the crosses in Hidden Valley, a first for me, (except for that other time  ) As I neared the finish, I could see a handful of folks headed up the Pima road, the only other bipeds I saw all day. Temps ranged from 73 to 79 which is about as nice as you can expect an August morning here to be.

I awoke a beautiful speck that was peacefully sleeping in the rain, blissfully unaware of my presence, and got to witness a roadrunner take to the skies. I'm not sure I've seen one fly before, but it was set keeping me from threatening to steal the lizard it held in its beak, because I was getting hungry at that point and apparently I looked like I wanted to steal it!

Hike w/ kiddos. They had way too much chaotic energy today, and while my legs are still sore from the Galiuros, I had to get them outside in some fashion. Up Young Man from 40th street, short jaunt on the ridge, drop into Hidden Valley, then meander down National Trail to Marcos de Niza to complete. Temps were great and with our (rare) afternoon start time, there wasn't as much traffic as I would have expected. Kids loved hunting down hieroglyphs and practicing "rock climbing", and they only got two bleeding scrapes, so all in all a success.

Short hike with the kids. Headed up San Gabriel Ridge, then up Guadalupe Ridge. Dropped down to Hidden Valley near the tunnel, then stayed in the wash below Hidden Valley. Some light rain at times while in the wash, just enough to get the rocks wet for a little while. Headed back up to Guadalupe Ridge to finish out the loop, then back down San Gabriel. Quite a few people out in the typically busy spots. Good workout despite how short this hike is.

Up San Gabriel, then west on Guadalupe Ridge to its end. Back east on National, through Hidden Valley, then down the wash. Back up to the ridge, then back down San Gabriel. Good loop, not many people, just a handful on National and two “lost” hikers in Hidden Valley. Trimmed back some of the vegetation in the wash. Could have done more, but didn’t want to spend forever on it. Got breezier as the morning went on, which felt great.

Parked at San Gabriel and headed over to Young Man trail and up that. Hot, no breeze. Was going to do more of Guadalupe Ridge before dropping down, but I decided I didn’t feel like dying up there, so I dropped down at the eastern end of Hidden Valley and then down the wash. The wash is my favorite part of this loop. Up to San Gabriel Ridge, and down that to finish out the loop. Only saw a few people today.

Noticed that San Gabriel Ridge is now part of the new Guadalupe Perimeter trail, which seems to start west of the Helipad Trail off Desert Classic. It runs east through Warpaint, over to San Gabriel, up the ridge, then west to where I’m assuming it ends at the start of National. That’s a guess based off the park’s master plan (which they are barely following, even in this case) and the fact that the last sign post I saw at the top of San Gabriel points west, but I didn’t notice any others.

Also, it appears that Marcos De Niza trail now ends at that same signpost at the top of San Gabriel Ridge, instead of at the Beverly Canyon junction. Again, not quite following the master plan, but there’s a sign. Will update the Marcos guide and official route sometime in the next few days.
