I forgot there was a mailbox up here. Seems a worthy destination.

I did a SoMo YoYo. Or is it a transomo?

For some reason I thought the gates stayed open past 7 in the summer. The two rangers were too busy doing ranger things together to get the gate closed before I entered at 7:01.

Good rain this morning left plenty of puddles, soft steps, and occasional mud. A nice change for June.

Up Tele, down Kiwa.

Fun story: I've never actually hiked the full Lomita. There are a couple of really nice stretches in there. Most is awful.

HAZ says you can't hike in Box Canyon. SoMo trail map has a friggen trail called Box Canyon. It parallels the geographic feature. But HAZ doesn't have the trail. Go figure.

On the ground, I couldn't find the trail. The GPS route for Holbert goes up a canyon signed as closed and aggressively obstructed with rock and natural debris. Holbert sign posts begin at the bottom of the Box Canyon wash along the paved road east of the fenced off activity center construction area. Which doesn't match the master trail plan. Who knew Somo could be so confusing? By all accounts, there is no currently legal way to connect Lomitas/Box with Holbert. After construction is complete, you will be able to traverse the huge parking lot. I think?

I hadn't hiked Holbert in over a decade. Maybe this is why?

Up and over. Nice breeze higher up. Stopped at the mailbox. Heading back to Telegraph, rangers on the road below got on the megaloudspeaker in their vehicle to ask if I was ok. I yelled back all good. A mile later it happened again. A different ranger this time. I wondered if I somehow looked distressed from hundreds of yards away through a windshield? Or maybe somebody had reported an overdue hiker and they were out looking for somebody. Or maybe there was a murderer on the loose? These mailbox walks are risky.

Dozens of millipedes enjoying the damp soil. Toad and vinegaroon. Coyotes howling. A bunch of western banded geckos. Nothing without shoulders, which surprised me a bit.

The beginning of the Holbert Trail has been erased and then camouflaged afterwards to the paved road near the water tank. A temporary access trailhead is setup near the construction fence. The whole area is being renovated and I'd guess that the trail is going to be rerouted away from the original location near the head of Box Canyon. Our first mini loop wasn't the best choice for this time of year. As expected, we encountered a viper face-to-face on one of the boulder scrambles. A neat little canyon though near the top, that would be more interesting after a good rain. I was relieved to be back on-trail afterwards and we then completed the HNKL loop CW. We skipped the lookout spur, which is now named Dobbins Extension. A few other hikers were on the Holbert, Kiwanis and Las Lomitas Trails, but nobody on National. There also was a small crew working the top section of the Telegraph Trail.

Up Telegraph, then east on National, which was nicely shaded. Quick stop at the old Holbert Lookout. Down Holbert, then west on what I guess is Box Canyon? West on Los Lomitas, up Kiwanis to finish out the loop, then down Telegraph. Lots of people on Kiwanis and Telegraph. Hazy, but cool, and a nice breeze the entire way.

Got to the TH about 6:30 am and it was cold. Only one there but a couple people came down the mountain. Last time I did this loop was fours years ago and I was not properly prepared for it. Street shoes and one water bottle just didn't cut it. Being prepared this time had and enjoyable hike. Could of shaved about 60 minutes off the hike but stopped many times to enjoy the views. Didn’t pass anyone until I got to the top of Telegraph Pass where I had a great conversation with Tom and Larry. Few people on Kiwanis and nobody til I got back to the TH.
Lots of trash on Holbert. 😒. What makes people think they don’t have to cleanup after themselves....or their pets!!!!! 😖😖😖. Great hike, spectacular views, good, crisp day and nice people!! Great to be out!! HAPPY HIKING!!

I started at the Holbert/Box Canyon trailhead. Took it to the end where it intersects Los Lomitas. Took it to the southern end where I picked up Derby Loop. Took Derby Loop to the intersection with Max Delta. Too it to the North end. Cut across wash and parking lot to car.
At one point I saw a Coyote. I tried to get to higher ground to see if I could see where he went. Wound up eye to eye with a squatting Coyote  . I turned away to give him privacy. When I turned back he was dragging his butt on a South Mountain paved road like a pet dog on carpet :o . True story! You never know what you might see on or off trail.....

Lauren joined Ryan and I for a morning hike in South Mountain. We started from the Telegraph Pass TH and hiked a lasso loop on Telegraph Pass, National, Holbert, Box Canyon, Los Lomitas, Kiwanis trails. The temps stayed in check through the hike and the nice breeze on Kiwanis and Telegraph Pass on the way down were very much appreciated :)

I always enjoy hiking with Ryan and Lauren and it was an extra special treat hiking with both at the same time today and look forward to more hikes together. How I just need to get Kelley out on the trails to make it a full family affair :y:

fletch texted me mid-morning for a hike, as we were both frittering the day away
discussion of picketpost was tabled due to rain potential
fletch had never been up to goat hill, so we decided on the loop
unfortunately, it was silent sunday, which added about a mile each way on my two least favorite trails
woman-ed up and went anyway ;)
second time we've driven all the way into the central entrance and needed a plan b
box canyon :next: los lomitos :next: kiwanis :next: national :next: goat hill :next: ranger :next: los lomitos :next: box canyon
estimating the mileage, elevation should be about right
nice temps, intermittent cloud cover, good views from goat hill
our next south mountain hike will most likely be maricopa peak, as fletch hasn't done that one yet
still a lot of bees around the blooming paloverde
april = bees may = gnats
finished the hike, picked up mike, and made our first visit to arizona wilderness brewery
they enjoyed a few different beers and we all liked the burgers

Another Son-day hike with LiLD. We did another South Mountain loop he hadn't done yet. Weather was pretty good and we were in the shade most of the hike. Trails chewed up pretty good in sections. Just getting warm as finished. Another nice hike with LiLD. Thanks Son! :y:

Nice and shady out this morning and not very many people. My first time on this section of national, box canyon and, los lomitas. The big rain definitely did some damage to these trails. This is a very nice loop.

Went for a late morning hike with my mom on a Monday. We decided to go up the Holbert trail and then decide to either go back down or make a loop from the top. Hit the trail head at about 11:45am and saw 3 hikers heading down within the first 20 minutes. There was a nice breeze blowing which really helped keep us cool. Once we reached the end of the Holbert trail we were feeling pretty good. Our adventurous side got the better of us and we decided to make a loop by going West on the National trail, down the Kiwanis trail and back to the car on Los Lomitas and Box Canyon loops. It was a beautiful day for mid May and we saw plenty of lizards, ground squirrels and even a couple of rabbits. There always seemed to be a small cloud of gnats following us but I only noticed them whenever we would stop. We ran into one other hiker where the National and Telegraph Pass trails meet by the Summit road and that was the last person we saw. About 3/4 of the way down the Kiwanis trail my legs felt like jello so I really had to push the rest of the way. We made it back to the car at about 4:30 and I was very happy to have the A/C blowing cold air in my face.

I absolutely loved this hike and hope to do it again when in better shape.

Great loop! Exactly what I was looking for today. Not too long. Not too short. Not too much elevation gain (well, there can never be too much elevation gain). Just the right amount of ruggedness.

There was only one problem. Apparently, there was a HUGE gnat convention on South Mountain this weekend. I always forget about that, like, one weekend a year where the gnats converge on the greater Phoenix trail systems to lay waste to the unsuspecting hikers. Seriously, I felt like I was battling my way through a gnat storm of epic proportions for about 75% of the hike. If there is a positive take-away, I guess they do help minimize stop time and increase your average hiking speed, for if you were to stop for any length of time, you would be eaten alive! I mean, if you opened your mouth it was instantly full of those little, black, buzzing b@stard$. They're small enough to swallow without chewing, but some always get stuck between your teeth, which, OMG, can you say unsightly!

Anyway, what was I originally saying? Yes! Great little 3 hour tour of South Mountain! And, plenty of parking!

East Half SoMo (with Telegraph Pass carry-up)

Halving completed a West half SoMo with a carry-up Telegraph Pass yesterday (check out :next: [ photoset ] ), I naturally needed to complete an East half SoMo with a carry-up Telegraph Pass to maintain balance in the universe.

I met Clark Norgaard by chance hiking up Telegraph Pass. We chatted as I did the carry-up to the saddle.

From the saddle, I launched into a speed ride down Summit Road and onto Central Avenue before veering off to the Big and Little Ramadas Picnic Areas to check out a couple of (unknown to me) trails I hadn’t explored before – T-bone and Ma Ha Tauk. The T-Bone Trail connects to the Max Delta Loop and Crosscut Trails. Meandered east along the Crosscut Trail that morphs into the Las Lomitas Trail (or is it Los Lomitas Trail) and eventually deposits you at the South Mountain Park Visitor Center where I discovered another new (at least new to me) trail – Judith Tunnell Interpretive Loop.

After checking out the Judith Tunnell Interpretive Loop (no bikes allowed, so had to keep a constant eye on my bike), headed east across the parking lot to explore some of the Box Canyon Loop, Holbert Trail, and Box Canyon. I found a new connector trail from the Holbert TH to the north end of 7th Street.

From 7th Street, I joined onto the Highline Canal Urban Trail before connecting with the Beverly Canyon Trail and Desert Classic at the Pima TH. Desert Classic took me home allowing enough time to catch the 4th quarter of the Packers/49ers game…

My new tubeless tires continue to ride well on the trail albeit they did add noticeable weight for the carry-up. Some of the “new to me” trails marked on the official SoMo Park map :next: https://phoenix.gov/webcms/groups/inter ... 062880.pdf

Today was silent Sunday :-$ so I started from the big parking lot near the re-education center at about 5:30am. Took Los Lomitas to Box Canyon, up Kiwanis, up the remaining part of Telegraph Pass (or is this National?), west on National, side trip up to Goat Hill, down Eliminator 2 Trail (very steep trail but probably the coolest trail over there, IMO), up Lost Ranch Ruins, down Lost Ranch Mine Trail, west on Gila, short cut to Bursera, up Pyramid, and returned back the same way.

Saw a rattlesnake with most of its rattle missing on Telegraph. Got charged by an off-leash dog on Gila Trail. Saw the same horses haulin' pumpkin up Kiwanis as last week. Counted 23 horses on Los Lomitas/Box canyon on the way down (very dusty). Temps weren't too bad until about 9:30 and even then there was a nice breeze heading up Pyramid. Black flies were out in force as I was heading down Kiwanis.

Headed out on Holbert Trail, leaving the trailhead at about 10 am. I was breaking in a new backpack, so had some extra gear stuffed more than I needed. I hiked with my dog, and she did great the entire trail. The trail starts off fairly flat and easy in the foothills towards a water tank. At the tank, it breaks up and South into the mountains. You follow a valley up, and pretty soon you have views North of the Phoenix metro area. By the time you reach the top, after about 2.5 miles, can see pretty much from the White Tank Mountains all the way to the Superstitions. We took the detour switch backs up to Dobbins Overlook (about 1/4 mile one-way)? Where there is a parking area (and toilets) as well as scenic views. We ran into more people here than anywhere else, as you can drive to this view as well. R

Returning down to Holbert Trail, we continued South to National Trail, crossing the road once. After intersecting with National Trail we headed West up towards the antennas scattered on the top of South Mountain. Outside of Holbert trail, this had the second steepest section of the trip. I did not encounter anyone on the trail after leaving Dobbins Overlook. Solitude, and my dog was able to really just enjoy the hike as well! National trail follows South Mountain, maintaining good views and a really good sonoran desert landscape of saguaros, ocotillos, chollas, barrel cactus, and ironwood & mesquite trees. Lots of interesting rock weathering as well lichen on the rocks as well. Great for photography.

After heading down to the intersection of Telegraph Pass we broke back North down Kiwanis trail. Kiwanis has a few more "step" sections than Holbert did, but fewer switchbacks. A bit harder on the knees I felt. However, you descend a valley still in the lush sonoran "forest" and end up at a picnic site and trailhead. At this point, we followed Los Lomitas Loop, which had evidence of lots of horse traffic, and sure enough just before running into the intersection of Los Lomitas and Box Canyon Loop we ran into two people riding horseback. Stepping aside and letting them pass was important as I didn't want my dog spooking the horses. We went a bit off the trail to ensure no problems, and the riders were very friendly and appreciative. Finished off Box Canyon Loop back to the trailhead and parking lot, and completed the somewhere between 7.2 and 7.5 miles in three hours, fifteen minutes. Next time, I'll need to get an accurate distance measurement of the Dobbins Overlook. This is a long, but good winter hike!

Nice loop starting on Pyramid to National, down Kiwanis, onto Los Lomitas and Box Canyon trails to get to Holbert. Up Holbert to National, west back to Pyramid. Met a guy on Pyramid looking for his running partner who was doing a 50K. He said they were doing an in and out. I told him they must be on the National, and got him back on his route. Later I saw the guy he was looking for, running at Booneman speed. He said his partner had connected with him. Not for long at his pace I'm sure.

got out right after work today
up holbert, west on national, down kiwanis, back on los lomitas and box canyon to close the loop
the first three segments of this loop are very enjoyable trails
good views, a nice climb up holbert, not too crowded, good footing for the most part
los lomitas and box canyon are sandy horse trails full of poop and i see no reason to hike either of them again
sunny and cool
saw a little bit of brittlebush and creosote flowering - not much out there
