Pleasant 78 degrees when I left the house this morning. Temp rose quickly until I was rolling my through the Comp Track parking lot. Did the Tech loop, up the triple switchbacks (yay!), back to the parking lot, then a second loop counter clockwise on Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford, Waddell, Mesquite, Ford, Ironwood, and Gray Fox. Had a little more left in me so I did a mini loop on the Comp track taking the first cut over. Saw 3 hikers on the Comp loop, 1 hiker on the Tech loop, 2 bikers and a trail runner on Ford Canyon. Got to spend some time chit-chatting with an old fella (that will be me soon enough) on a 'Lectric bike in the parking lot.

Decided to ride White Tanks this morning. Mixed it up and Parked at the recently remodeled Area 4, very nice! There's a short connector trail over to Mule Deer, then Ford Canyon for a bit to Mesquite, Waddell, Ironwood, Gray Fox over to the Comp Loop. Skipped the Tech Segment today. So happy to make it up the switchbacks today! Made my way back to Gray Fox after completing the Comp Loop, then Ironwood, Ford Canyon back to Mule Deer and Area 4 parking. Saw a rattlesnake in the bushes in the horse staging lot. Passed 2 hikers and a biker on the Comp Loop. Various other hikers a 2 bikers on the other trails. Made a stop at the windmill pond. Got started after 7, heat wasn't too bad, there was a nice breeze.

Quick morning hike in the White Tanks. Did one of the easier loops out there. Started around 5am from the windmill and did a clockwise loop involving the Mesquite, Waddell, Ford, Ironwood and Ford Canyon Trails. Very easy hike. Felt like I had the trails to myself, though I did encounter 2 hikers and a biker. Minimal wildlife…7 rabbits.

Finally recd a stronger response posting to the far W side. Had 10 on list but the two I'm friends with dropped the nt b4. At TH 2 decided this outing would be too much so branched off for a shorter route. Still works lets roll.

Ended up breaking off into 2 groups of 3. I waited at all intersections. We did the loop in rev. so most of the EG was on Mesquite. The back of the park is interesting going through the wash + boulder navigating.

Think this was a perf balance for Meetup of challenge, being different yet not over the top difficult. I & the others felt comfortable despite high of 81. Will post another loop variation next year.

Lunch ride at the White Tanks today. Started with the Competitive Loop with the Technical Segment. Then continued with a counter clockwise loop on Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford, Waddell, Mesquite, Wild Life loop, Ford, Ironwood, and Gray Fox back to the parking lot. Saw a horse at the start of my ride in the comp track parking lot, was still there when I returned 2 and a half hours later. First time I've visited the windmills off the Wild Life trail. Nice little pond/oasis! Took a lap around the campground and stopped to chat with a couple from Minnesota about their travel trail. Crazy windy today. Thought my van was going to blow over on the way home. Saw some hikers on the trails here and there. Lots of cars in the parking lots. Campgrounds were busy, but not full.

Got started from Area 7 around 0730 with Jill & Janelle. Took Waddell north. West on Ford Canyon. My favorite wall of dudleya is looking very dry.

At the end of Ford Canyon, continued south on Goat Camp, then the ridge up towards Barry Goldwater Peak. There were three guys ahead of us, and I chatted with them at the summit for a few minutes. They’re training for Rim to Rim. Had a snack break, then headed back down. Was almost chilly while walking the road. I survived in a shirt and shorts, but Jill looked like an Eskimo.

Retraced our steps back north to the Ford/Willow Canyon jct. East on Willow, short stop at the spring (bone dry) then continued east, Finished up on Mesquite to close out the loop.

Nice cloud cover and breeze most of the day. Easy mileage. I finally remembered to put a new hat in my truck, which I wore, but the stupid thing gave me some welt/blister across my forehead, which now looks awesome 🙄

Joined the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Nick, John) for a ride in the White Tanks today. Started at the Library and took Mule Deer clockwise to South, Goat Camp, Bajada, back to Mule Deer. Then over to Ford Canyon counter clockwise to Waddell and Mesquite Canyon back to Mule Deer returning to the Library. Lots of folks out hiking on the trails this morning and some bikers. Saw a couple on a tandem mountain bike, that was pretty cool. Trails were really dusty, when is it ever going to rain again?

Let the house before sunrise for the drive to White Tanks and it was already 86 degrees when I got there at 6:30. My favorite parking spot was just repaved with some bright white lines. Started on the Competitive loop with a side trip up the Technical segment. Made it up the triple switchback climb, it's been a while, I credit the new Bontrager Gunnison tires (lol). Saw one other biker, who parked aside of me, on the way back to the van to get my sunglasses. Went back out for a counter-clockwise loop on Desert Fox, Ironwood, Ford Canyon, Waddell, Ford Canyon, Ironwood, and back on Desert Fox. Saw that same biker finishing his ride and loading up his bike on the back of his new Tacoma. Great sunrise and super moon set this morning.

I had pickleball class in Surprise this morning so I loaded up the bike and my gear on my way out of the house this morning. After class, I headed over to the Sun Valley trailhead and rode the Maricopa Trail down to White Tank Mountain Regional Park, did a little loop in the park, and returned the way I came back to the van. Sun Valley trailhead is a great little gravel parking lot, no water or toilets though. Plenty of Maricopa Trail signs to keep you on track. Had some nice conversations with other trail users. Saw a pretty even mix of hikers and bikers on MT and in the park.

Wasn’t sure what the rain was going to be like today, so Chris and I opted for an easy loop. Got started around 0730 and headed north on Waddell Trail. West on Ford Canyon, which had a lot of toppled saguaros in the area. One of my favorite saguaros is still standing, but nearly dead, kind of a bummer. Started to drizzle on our way uphill. Never needed a rain jacket, but the smooth granite in the canyon did get a little slick. Still, a fun hike up the canyon.

Headed east on Willow Canyon, stopping at the spring. No water in the pool at the base of the waterfall, and the spring itself was dry. I don’t recall ever seeing it completely dry since I’ve been coming out here since around 1990 or so. After that we continued down Willow, then Mesquite to finish out the loop. Saw several hikers in the final mile of Mesquite. The constant drizzle we’d had since Ford Canyon finally turned to a light rain just as we were getting back to the parking lot. Nice loop fir the day, and great weather.

White Tanks Tuesday! Started at South Trail, to Goat Camp, Bajada, Mule Deer, Mesquite Canyon, Waddell, Ford Canyon, Gray Fox, Comp Loop, Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford Canyon, Mule Deer back to South trail to complete the loop. Lots of cars in the parking lots and hikers out on the trails. Saw a few bikers too. Cattle drive going on south of big hill on Mule Deer. I was dragging today, couldn't wait to finish the loop.

Second MTB ride on the clipless system. Nervous about crashing on the triple switchback climb. Made it around the 1st switchback, no problem. Didn't full commit on the 2nd switchback and fell to the uphill side, thank god, while still stuck in the pedals. Made a go at the 3rd switchback, got 80% around and chickened out, got unclipped, whew! Easier than I thought to get restarted on the hill. Hot sun this morning, but cool breeze was appreciated. Saw one other biker on Ford Canyon trail. Couple of cars in the lots around the park.

Got a late start at White Tank Regional Park this morning, but didn't mind the heat and there was a nice breeze. Did the comp track loop and then on to Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford Canyon, Mesquite, back to Ford/Ironwood/Gray Fox. Saw a nice Roadrunner hanging out near my van.

We did a short hike to the Verrado Petroglyph site first thing in the morning [ triplog ] , then drove over to the regional park for this one. That meant a later start than usual, and we had to wait in a line of vehicles at the park entrance. I assumed White Tanks gets plenty of traffic on typical weekends and hoped we wouldn't be battling additional Super Bowl tourists staying in the west valley for the game tomorrow. I don't know what level of busyness constitutes "normal" here, but we were able to get a spot right near Waddell Trailhead in Area 7, so that was an encouraging start.

We hiked the loop clockwise, starting on Mesquite Trail. The first few miles had a steady incline and passed in a repetitious blur as were constantly trying to make our around groups of hikers, which was annoying but not unexpected. The traffic started to thin out past the Willow Canyon intersection and continued to improve from there. We were doing well time-wise, so we took Goat Camp Trail up to Barry Goldwater Peak. All the way up, and even from the peak, Radio Summit looks like it's higher than Goldwater, but judging <100 feet of elevation difference from that distance is tough. The views from the top are nice but mostly obstructed by the towers and utility buildings, so I didn't spend much time up there, and I didn't see the red jar with the summit register mentioned in the guide.

We returned on Goat Camp Trail and resumed the clockwise loop on Ford Canyon Trail. That was especially enjoyable once the trail dropped down into the creek bed and we got into the stretch with the white granite slabs and the tanks. I vaguely remembered hiking through there from the opposite direction one winter years ago when the tanks were mostly empty and partially frozen. There's some fun scrambling in that area, and we somehow missed one of the signs where the trail leaves the creek bed and bypasses the steep drop-offs in the canyon.

[ youtube video ]

A little past the missed turnoff, it immediately became more difficult to get around the pools, and we were facing some 20+ downclimbs that I certainly didn't remember going up last time...seemed like a bit much for an official trail in a regional park, and a quick look at the GPS confirmed we'd missed a turn a few hundred feet back. Ford Canyon was more impressive than I remembered, but I suppose I appreciated it more after a closer look at some the rougher sections.

After the canyon opened up again, the city came into view, and I could read the giant "Super Bowl LVII" sign on State Farm Stadium when I zoomed in. We eventually reconnected with Waddell Trail and finished off the loop around 5:30PM. Between this hike and Verrado Petroglyphs in the morning, we finished with ~20 miles for the day. Other than the first few miles on the loop, the crowds weren't too bad, and traffic wasn't especially bad on the drive home...we weren't sure what to expect the night before the Super Bowl. The weather was perfect today, in the mid-70s, and it was nice to get back to the White Tanks after a 5-6 year hiatus.

This is a great moderate loop given how close it is to NW metro Phoenix (if that's relevant).

Waddell trail was rather generic, but went by quickly. Ford Canyon ended up being interesting far longer than I thought, and the light class 2 scrambles worked in made it engaging to move through as well. It was worth stepping a little off trail over to some rocky viewpoints to look down into it on the steeper part of the ascent. We saw two decent sized herds of deer - one around the "back" of the loop, and another just past willow spring which was a neat location.

The scattered stonework around willow spring was interesting - most of it decipherable but some of it a bit more obscure. The old walls along the large boulder to the left (as you approach) of the pool were a bit mysterious as they didn't seem like they'd do much unless that area REALLY filled in.

Kelly and I got started a little after 0800 and headed up Mesquite Canyon Trail. We were a little rushed in the parking lot, trying to start ahead of a group of about twenty hikers (average age: 100) who were heading up Mesquite as well. Uphill on Mesquite is nice, moderate grade, good trail.

After Mesquite, we headed south on Goat Camp, enjoying the jets flying overhead. The turn off for Barry Goldwater Peak is cairned, and the unofficial trail is clear and distinct. Steep in places, but easy hiking over to the dirt road. Steep hike up the road, but the misery is short lived. No breeze at all for the day until we reached the summit—breezy and cold. Found a spot mostly out of the wind and had a snack, while trying to both keep an eye on and ignore two odd fellows at the buildings.

Once we were frozen, we headed back downhill, wind stopping almost immediately. Back north on Goat Camp. Stopped at the turnoff for Willow and briefly debated a side trip to the spring. Deciding against it, we headed north on Ford Canyon, up over the ridge, then down to the wash. Fun hike down the wash, with some water forcing a bit of creativity. The largest pools were just below the dam. The wash was over far too quickly and then we were back on real trail. Some poppies on the flat section. One gorgeous fox crossed our path, but he was too fast for a picture.

Finished up on Waddell, which was mindlessly easy walking, but went by quickly. Got back to the truck just after 1400. Great hike, and always good to hike with Kelly!
