Great hike with Carey, Christina, and Yolanda. Ran into Park Ranger Kevin who took us on a side trail to some petroglyphs. Kevin also showed us a cool mountain lion video from one of the parks trail camera's. Didn't see anyone on the first half of the hike, plenty of hikers and 4 bikers on the second half. Stopped to chat with the horses on the way back to the parking lot.

I wanted to check out the flora and water situation out in the Spur Cross area.

Starting from the Jewel of the Creek Preserve TH, you could hear Cave Creek running almost immediately. This is a special little riparian area.

Dragonfly Trail to the Spur Cross Trail to the Elephant Mountain Trailto Limestone Trail. The farther in, the more diverse and plentiful the flowers were.

I took a brief break at the Elephant Mountain saddle to cool off in the breeze before jumping on the Limestone Trail. Limestone could use a bit of trimming as it does not get a lot of traffic.

Back down at Cave Creek the Good Friday family crowd was enjoying playing in and around the water.

The rest was just a jaunt back to the TH.

Since I had spent 4 hours in this sauna earlier today playing golf, I decided to do a little hiking and sweat some more pounds off. Cathy and I have been watching Spur Cross get dumped on all week so we went over to see how the creek and flora were doing.

It has been a while since we hiked up here at sunset. It's really nice except for all the gnats and flies. Have you ever seen those odd slap fights on ESPN? That was us except we were slapping ourselves. We had to have looked hilarious from a distance. Note to self, next time bring bug spray.

We stayed mainly on the "tourist" trails, but even those were all washed out from the rain and in much need of maintenence. The Metate and Towhee trails were very muddy and we grew a couple of inches with all the buildup on our shoes. There was good flow in the creek and we were able to get cleaned up.

We stopped by a couple of petroglyph sites along the way back to the car. I sure look forward to the cooler weather so we can get back in the hills north of Spur Cross and into the Tonto NF. It's just too darn hot still.

Judy and I from main TH out Matate Tr and back Spur Cross Tr. Test hike for me as it’s been 14 days since my start of Covid symptoms. Mild reaction from Sunday to Thursday. I tested positive and had high temp of 101. Judy did not get it. Took it slow as I’ve had to stop and rest on a few neighborhood walks this past week.

We had company coming over, so I decided to take a Hike. Knee is about 85% to 90%. Only the second time I've been off sidewalk. The first was just a small bump of a hill in December. Wanted to see just how far I could go. First time in my trail runners in over a year. This seemed like an easy choice to get some uneven ground work in. I took it a step further and did a confidence test. Rock hopping Cave Creek. The biggest obstacle to overcome after rehab is the confidence factor. Glad I did it towards the beginning instead of the end or I'd have gotten wet. Good to be back out at Spur Cross. I almost didn't do Jewel of the Creek after the bigger loop, but decided to push it. The knee started whimpering just a tad during Jewel, but that's as far as it went. But I could tell when I finally got back to the truck the second time that there was some pretty good fatigue happening. The knee was shaky, but generally not sore. I stopped several times during this hike for about 10 minutes each, just to see if I was going to stiffen up. I was surprised that there was very little of that. I didn't take any Ibuprofen before this hike because I wanted to see what the knee would do without any help or inhibitions. Overall, I was pleased. With that said, I can say I don't have any trail legs right now. My feet, ankles and shins were spasming last night into this morning. But the knee is fine. And in the third week of January I finally got to experience a tiny bit of Fall. Something I really really missed this last year. The plan is to try to get at least one hike a week from here on out. It's time to get back in trail shape so I can move on to bigger and even better things....

Past Peak for sure, but there's still some nice color out there in Jewel of the Creek.

There was a smattering of vehicles at the Spur Cross TH when we started at 7:40. It was cool and breezy which was good, because the first 7 miles trends upward. 1.5 miles of it, steeply.

I enjoy the non-official #247A and #247B over hiking Spur Cross/FR 48 to #247. It's a bit shorter and more scenic IMO.

Once on Skull Mesa #248, the track becomes steeper. Good views to the south start to open up. Up top, #248 becomes thinner the farther east you go. Just keep an eye out for cairns. Bovine trails make it easy to get off the actual trail. Heading down the east side Joe spotted a bear in the distance. I told him that just because recreational cannabis was legal, he didn't need to be mixing this with the assortment of other toxins he puts in his system. (ie. Diet Sprite). The cow didn't seem to care we were in the area.

Mattys was easier to get into than our previous trip. The "Bears" in the area had beat down some of the heavier brush. Water was trickling in quite a few areas and the geology does not disappoint.

The cabin is on it's last legs and will not be standing much longer. For more info, @Oregon_Hiker did his normal excellent historical sleuthing to determine the background back in 2015. [ photoset ] .

Leaving the area, heading north we followed the obvious old path they used to get here, until it was no longer... obvious.

After some head scratching and more importantly leg scratching, we dumped back into Mattys for the remainder of the trek to Cave Creek #4. This is not my most favorite of trails out here, but it got us to the unmarked/named spur to get us down to the running Cave Creek.

3 miles from the Spur Cross TH, we saw our first people since the start of the hike.
Perfect temps and good times.

I picked a loop Bruce had us on six years ago. More so for a step up in recent efforts to miles/aeg with some off-trail. In hindsight, it's crystal clear why Bruce chose the loop weeks after legend HAZ'r Oregon_Hiker toured with FOTG. Semi surprised Bruce was game as it would be pushing the envelope of time with my lackluster options of getting to-fro. I just made damn sure I was ready for a full day, right down to bringing a rare notable size lunch.

Went from sweating, shedding layers getting to the event to layers back on for a borderline cold start. Bruce paid our dues at the hut. I took advantage of the porta-potty station with nicer facilities than Oscar Taylor's at the Biltmore, where I bussed famous folks tables cringing when they asked "where is the restroom", and we were underway.

Off the road(cough trail), we encountered a nice looking welcome(?) sign neither of us could read without specs and continued up Inspiration Ridge to #247. #248 obviously needs a much better Official Route on HAZ for the lower portion alone. Midway up, I had to get rid of a layer before unnecessary sweat took hold. #248 ascends Skull Mesa, crosses, and then descends down to meet up with #247 again. #1 copout from 5-15 yr noncontributing HAZ members trying to weasel by without contributing squat back... all the good stuff is taken. God forbid exploring included the thousands of rarely-used unpublished Guide pages on HAZ that are nice at sunset, blah blah blah. #248 is still available, and it's far from the exception. Off rant. Unlikely... somebody has to fill in for CDK!

The route of #248 across Skull Mesa is highly questionable. I've been here twice at least, and that's the best I can offer. We went off-trail down the origin of Mattys Creek. With nice weather, scattered clouds, relatively easy progress, and a couple of cool areas of rock then trees... this might be the nearest slice of paradise to home.

We had lunch in Mattys Creek, played around with styrofoam light chalk, limestone, or something white.

Bruce was excited about the cabin. It was a gander. Then we opted to try and avoid Mattys Creek taking a trace of a pack trail out. Glad we took a stab, maybe another in the future. That said, the creek is much easier and less painful in shorts.

I was a touch concerned Bruce wanted to skip #4 out for an adventure. This area is not crystal clear to me, and I was in good hands. It was fab, and we even got a stroll in on Metate and Towhee. Super easy, but fond memories make 'em a winner.

After seeing nary a soul since the first quarter-mile, we saw quite a few horses, a couple of hikers, and one mtn biker that appeared to be heading out to bike-camp.

Another afternoon hike.

After stopping at my daughters to finish up, we picked up Deb on the way and headed out to Spur Cross.

Once again, I was hoping that it would not be too crowded and it worked out. We had a goal of checking out the Petroglyphs, but also new it would be a stretch with the time we had. We got close before our turnaround time. On the way back we detoured down the Metate Trail so I could show them the large Saguaros and the Metates.

I hadn't hit up The J of the C or SC recently. With the cooler temps, I was looking for something close, so this fit the bill. The parking lot at the J of the C was 1/2 full, a good sign for the whole SD thing. The weather was in the 60's to start.

J of the C is just starting it's autumnal thing and should get better over the coming weeks.

Dragonfly, to Spur Cross Trail, to the Elephant Mountain Trail, where I took a cool down break at the saddle.

Next up was the Limestone Trail. I ran into 2 groups of 2 on this section. The breeze simmered down here, so it got a little warm. The spring box at Limestone Spring has not held water for quite a few years now. I went to look for the source in the vegetation, but it was too thick for my liking.

Through the Cave Creek #4, to the Metate, to the Tortuga Trails I expected to run into more people. My neck gaiter got a work out as a face mask as 1/2 the the other hikers I passed did the same.

Back over in J of the C, I opted to hit the rest of the loop

Temps were good for the most part as long as the breeze kept up. I successfully negotiated the area, without being discovered by @LosDosSloFolks. Yea me!

Short, after work hike. Wasn't looking to do much and, as far as exposure goes, this is probably one of the more shady trails in the valley. Got to the TH around 4:30. On the drive in I was surprised to see where one of the burn areas was located. I had heard about it on the news, but driving through it really brought it home. Also noted that parking for the Dragonfly trail is closed. Seems like that closure has been in place for awhile now.

Just wanted to do a loop involving the Towhee. Went CCW. In on the Spur Cross (going north) to where the Metate starts. And then took the Metate to where the Towhee splits off. Trails are well maintained despite all the growth surrounding it. After Towhee rejoined the Metate I took that back to another segment of the Spur Cross and took that back to the TH. Uneventful hike. No wildlife except for lizards and no one else on the trails.

Side note: Did a wildlife no no. Driving home I came across a rabbit in the middle of the road. It was sitting there licking its paws as I drove slowly by. I got out and approached it and it was oblivious to me. I gathered it up in a sheet and placed the little guy in the car, turned the air on high and tried to give him some water. But it seemed indifferent to my ministrations. Sadness....by the time I got home the little guy had stopped breathing :( :( Wonder if I could have done something different. I guess it just shows that you should let nature take care of itself.

We helped map some invasive plants in Spur Cross this morning. It's amazing the amount of biodiversity in that park- which unfortunately also applies to invasive plants.

A busy schedule has precluded us from hiking much lately but this morning we at least made something happen. A friend came up from Phoenix to get some final leg stretching in for his go at the Camino de Santiago. He leaves soon for Spain to hike 200 of the 500 mile journey. I asked why he wasn't doing all 500 miles, (he's only 59), and he just looked at me like I had two heads. :D

Since Spur Cross is in our back yard we did a quick loop hike and short walkabout there. He had not been up here before and it was beautiful for us. The rain we had last night not only kept the dust and heat away but the humidity was so high there were low clouds everywhere at the start of the hike which made for some nice vistas. I was gladly surprised at the amount of wildflowers still thriving up here. Pretty much gone in most other places.

Another Luna hike in the books. Paid my $3 and passed several large groups on my way to the Tonto line. Anytime I come up here, I go through the Metate trail because why not? It is fantastic. Normal water flow in the creek. Stopped at the glyph area. The aliens are still there.. because we never left. Kept going up creek past the old truck and into a small corral area. We had a small snack and hung put by the creek for a while. When we were leaving I found a trail leading up the hill, so I decided to keep going up it and the path was pretty easy to follow up to where it started to flatten out a bit and I lost the trail until I saw some pink ribbons and I followed those for a while until I lost those also. As I was checking the map and reorienting myself, I came upon a nice ruin area with several walls and some great views. Eventually, I found the Cave Creek trail and took that back to Spur Cross. Luna is loving jumping in all these pools and puddles lately, she is really coming around.

As much as a recovery hike as anything. Nice to do something low impact for aching toes, ankles and knees. Actually, felt better after the hike than before. Got started around 7 am. Did a short, clockwise loop...Metate - Towhee - Spur Cross. Recent rains made for a somewhat muddy Spur Cross....Metate and Towhee still in good shape. Cottonwood Creek flowing nicely. Wildlife...saw a hawk and several rabbits.

Now that is cool in the Sonoran Desert, I plan to do a few mine explorations. This Friday, I intended to return to Santa Maria River area, hoping to find something even half as cool as the Weepah-Homestake Mine: [ photoset ] . But that would have required at least some planning & research, and I had too many other things going on last week to put in the necessary time. I was able to quickly change gears to this loop, which I last did in December, 2012. So long ago, I had posted only one video, ever, to Youtube. This hike is my 448th video: https://vimeo.com/494423862 .

Not much sense in repeating my 2012 triplog, so I'll hit the highlights. 😉

Cave Creek had light flow, but could be dry hopped at each of the three wood plank bridges between Spur Cross Trail and the wilderness boundary a mile north.

There was pretty darn good fall color north of the wilderness boundary.

Judging by others’ reports, the Limestone Spring box is full with decent flow between November and March, at the least. There’s lots of bees, but they are not aggressive. (I stepped across the spring box several times without being stung.) 🐝

I followed the obvious trail up from Limestone Spring, but it was newly established trail. The actual trail, hidden in heavy grass, proceeds up wash for a bit, before cutting through some trees to join up with the new trail. You can’t go wrong either way.

The old gate still tops the saddle between Limestone Spring and Page Spring, which is full of moist sand.

Between the gate and Page Spring, Limestone Trail #252 descends through white rock, worn to chalky powder in many spots. I bet that is limestone. I smart. 🤪

From Page Spring, to the cemented together "Rondo Spring" cairn, south to Tortuga Trail, it is still rocky as all get out. A pain in the tutkis. And feet. Piedra no bueno.

A ½ mile south of the petroglyph rock, the trail surface turns to jeep trail, the surface steadily improving the closer it gets to Cave Creek. For a few hundred yards it is Elephant Mountain Trail, for ¾ of a mile Tortuga Trail, then a ½ mile of Spur Cross Trail to the Metate Trail intersection, closing the loop. On weekends, this section is packed, particularly with dog walkers. On Friday, at lunch time, the only folks I saw were two old ladies resting on a bench by Cave Creek. 👵🏻

This was my 193rd hike of 2018. Unless I break a leg, I'll hit 200. 💪

On Sunday, I did a variation of the Spur Cross Loop. My main goal was to hike the Limestone Trail #252, which I've really enjoyed in the past.

I started on Spur Cross, heading north. This eventually turns into Cave Creek Trail #4. Next, I went west and somewhat south on the Limestone Trail. At the end of the Limestone Trail, I met my wife who had hiked out the other direction on Spur Cross and had gone up Elephant Mountain past the Fortress. We continued on Elephant Mountain heading east and slightly south. That led to Tortuga and then back to Spur Cross. I then took the Metate Trail and did Towhee since it was on the way. I returned via the Spur Cross Trail.

I've hiked the Limestone Trail in the past. On past hikes, I've found it to be confusing. On today's hike, it seemed pretty straightforward. The only time I got off trail was at just before three miles in (total) where the Limestone Trail appeared to descend into a wash and the ascend the opposite bank. That turned out to be wrong - it goes into the wash, then turns right, follows the wash for a short ways and then switchbacks to the left up the opposite bank just before the vegetation gets dense. The way I took also worked, but I knew I had gotten it wrong when the somewhat indistinct trail I was on intersected with a very good trail. I hiked back to see how I had gotten it wrong as well as to wring every bit of Limestone goodness out of the trail. 8)

Aside from erosion in a few places on the Elephant Mountain Trail, the trails seemed to be in good condition.

This was my first time on the Metate and Towhee Trails. I saw a number of flowers on the Metate. Towhee isn't very long, but it does provide a few views of the creek. Metate has a better view of Cave Creek at the northeast end.

I encountered only one other hiker on the Limestone Trail. There were a bunch of other trail users on the other trails.

Saturday night we had to take my daughter to the airport to be there at 10pm for her one week field trip to Washington DC with her school. This would preclude me being able to get up at my normal 4am time for a longer morning hike, but we were also due for a family hike. I had a loop planned out that was around the 7 mile mark, which is at about their limit. Between the longer drive and the longer hike, an early start was necessary, which would be rough after leaving the airport after 10:30pm. Fortunately, it was nothing that some caffeinated drinks and a 7am Slayer CD wouldn't solve.

My Camelbak bladder had been developing a small leak since Saturday morning and it decided to break loose on the ride out to the trailhead. By the time we got there, water was leaking out of the back before I even opened the hatch. The bladder was half empty. Luckily I had enough extra water in bottles that was enough for our hike.

We started from the Spur Cross TH and paid $3 for me and my wife (Dmitri is under 16, so he hiked for free). At the TH, I saw one other vehicle with a HikeArizona.com sticker. We headed north on the Spur Cross Trail, hiked the Fairy Duster Loop, then did the Mariposa Hill Spur (which is actually the beginning of the shortcut to the Skull Mesa Ruins hike, FYI), then headed back south on the Metate Trail, taking the Towhee side trail and headed back to the parking lot after hiking the Dragonfly Trail.

The solar oasis along the Metate Trail was interesting as it had a manmade pond with water lilies. The Metate Trail especially was the nicest being mostly level and smooth, with a lot of vegetation that gave moderate shade. Heading south on the Dragonfly Trail towards the Jewel of the Creek Preserve I stopped to wait for my family and just happened to notice a petroglyph. It was nice to see that kind of stuff out here. I really think this area is very underrated, I'm always impressed with the scenery even after seeing it several times.

The weather was kind of warm, but not too bad. We averaged well over 2 mph, which is amazing for Dmitri. I was thinking this hike might be a bit overambitious but they all kept up very well. Everyone was pretty spent by the end of it, however, and ready for lunch. I hiked the last 3+ miles without taking a sip of water since I didn't have my Camelbak bladder. Nice to get out on a Sunday morning for a quick hike that pushed the boundaries a little bit.

247A is signed closed on the near end, which resides inside Spur Cross. The trail is in good shape and well used. To be legal simply hike 0.15 mi further on #4 to the forest boundary where off-designated-trail travel is legal. BTW proposed fee increases on Feb 21st might go live April 1st. If you support this forest buffer not keeping good trails open and charging you more... do absolutely nothing and you help seal the deal.

This wasn't the planned hike and I'm not a huge fan of this area. Which aside from despising the access stems heavily on wet hikes across Skull Mesa. Once again this desert dweller enters the area on a friggen rainy day... bah humbug

The mountain views along this moderate loop are fab. Due to our abbreviated plans Bruce suggested we head out a little further on #247. Passing a side canyon I through out a prayer we explore the narrow looking canyon. Boy howdy did we get lucky! An intriguing stretch flash rocked our peptides.

Then onwards to another Cottonwood Spring. Interesting 2 share the same name within a mile on the same 7.5 topo New River Mesa.

Bruce had the foresight to finish with Metate/Towhee. Which should be a given for every hike in the area. The area is as dry as I've seen. The wild cucumber that arches over Towhee is currently a dry brittle salad.

This was plan B for the day.
Some of my relatives had the first area closed because they needed some "Privacy" while making little Eagles.

So after some conversation, we headed over to Spur Cross and did this loop.

Temps dropped a bit during the hike and we got a steady drizzle starting around 9:15, but we never got the 30mph gusts that were forecast. This is an enjoyable loop on some new sections of trail for me. Cottonwood Spring (the southwestern most, there are 3 in the area) had plenty of water to filter from. There was some plastic pipe, a shovel and pitch fork in the area also.

We hopped into Cottonwood Creek (Dry) for some splorin'. There were a couple of interesting rocky areas. We decided to go up to the next Cottonwood Spring. There was no sign of a spring that we found, but we caught the Cottonwood #247 here to turn around.

Ran into a a couple of other hikers out there prior to hitting the Metate Trail to check out the Huge Saguaros.

Could find no flow or sign of a spring from this Cottonwood Spring. The other one in the area had plenty of flow.
