In keeping with the theme of today’s hike, today’s mileage and elevation is also a mystery. When I got out to hike this morning I discovered that my Garmin had not charged and was already DOA. :( I hiked a route that was pretty close to the “Mystery Loop”, but was not the same route. I went along the small range to the north of the Christiansen and visited parts of the Perle Charles, Voaz and LV Yates along with a bunch of use trails. Kind of nice to do some trails that I haven’t done in years.

Started from the 40th St. TH. A little annoyed that I had to wait for gates to be opened at 5. I could have parked on a side street and hiked in early, but I didn’t. Ok sunrise. I was hoping for better. Nice breeze and mountain shade made the temps feel cooler than they probably were. Not much wildlife: a few jackrabbits and quail. Encountered 9 other hikers in my wanderings.

Well that certainly wasn't my intent. Sometimes me and my bright ideas. Oh well, it ended up being a good hike for me so I'm glad of that. I had a route in mind but once my hip started acting up, I went to a Plan B.

From 38th St I hiked my usual route counterclockwise around Happy Hour Ridgeline. First things I saw was a stunning blooming Hedgehog and then a nice big piece of quartz I must have not really noticed before. But then, I noticed the desert garden that was to the south had been torn up :( . I can't tell what they are up to yet. It was breezy as I hiked westbound and rode the roller coaster hills around to the west side and to the 100 before heading up the hill to VOAZ. Nope, my hip said no more climbing. Little did I know...

So I headed over toward Irregualar C and decided since it was an easy grade, I would at least hike to the first saddle. There were some nice blooming flora next to the trails; must have been enough of a distraction that my hip didn't bother me. I eyed where the next saddle was and kept on. I spoke to a couple that said I didn't have far to go to the top, which of course I knew. At the top I gave thought to hiking down the 302 and crossing over toward the Dreamy Draw area. It was a short thought as 30 seconds later I was on my way.

There were lots of Brittlebushes in the crevices of the mountains including at the Junction of Trail 302. I headed westbound hoping to see a crossover trail to the north. It's a pretty trail and has its ups and downs for sure. I soon realized that the trail that I thot would take me to the northside was the one that petered out at the bottom of the second saddle of the Irregular C where I ran into the 2 Chic Filet folks from GA. They remarked the last part was pretty difficult. As I hiked further I could see that so I opted to continue on the 302.

I had forgotten I was last on this trail in May 2021 and of course, my bad ending hike here in Feb 2016 (found someone to give me a ride back to Dreamy Draw TH). Believe it or not, I also didn't remember how steep and slippery some of the down can be. I ran into a couple hikers who were fixing up one of the bigger drops where a rock had come out; he was a biker. I finally got to the bench I could see further up and this is also where you can take the other trail down to the Basin. I realized at this point that your basically mountained in and to get to the north, it requires going over a mountain : rambo : .

Throughout the hike I took picutres of the beautiful blooming Hedgehogs. They really are stunning when they bloom all at once. I finaly made it over to the saddle that provides a nice view of the city and is the junction for Perl Charles 1a which I did the whole of several years ago (can't find the triplog). I do remember it circles wide to the west from Dreamy Draw and I hated the freeway noise.

Now it's about a mile before the hike up the renovated Summit trail from the west. I remember this part as not being easy and even though the trail is pristine now, I hate steps, even beautiful ones. The trail is actually lovely and it had enough flora and squirrels to distract me as I slowly made my way up. I never know if it's good that you can seen your final destination.

Whoo hoo, I finally got to the saddle. Quite frankly, after coming down the Summit Trail on the east side, I'd almost rather would have gone back the way I came. I forget how much I hate this trail.. and remember, I hate steps. So kudos to the folks that do this often; it's sure not my cup of tea, more like poison  . There were, of course, lots of folks coming and going. I was very glad to reach the bottom, but I knew I had another big hill to climb. BUT, it wasn't the hill I thought.

As I got past the ramada area, I found a nice level rock and chilled for a few minutes. The trail is rocky here and there and I don't like that either but I understand why they pile those rocks on it. I was in the shade now continuing north. I encountered a couple people I had seen on the other side. They must hike like rockets, sheesh. I had not been on the full 302 Freedom Trail (couldn't help but think of our USA hostages for some reason), and today was the day. I guess I forgot this part of the trail was even here as I have never been on it before. It's not bad at all.

And now I was in familiar territory and had one goal in mind. Get back to Tonto 3 and on my way to In N Out as I was thirsty and hungry. I was finally back in the sunshine with the sun at my back as I returned on part of the 1a and 8 to miscellaneous trails. I didn't encounter any other hikers the rest of the way; but then again, it was 5:30ish. I had thot to be done around 5 with my initial plans. I was still doing well though, so I was happy about that. My hip didn't hurt too bad but now my back (bulging disc) was hurting; probably from one of the jump downs on the bumpy part of the trail. It still hurts today.

WATCH 6.99 mi, 2:50-6:07PM burning 1365 calories, 1281-1783 elevation. 135 avg bpm/169 max with 17% Zone 4 (149-167) Anaerobic, 45% Zone 3 (131-148) Aerobic, Zone 2 (112-130) Weight Control
Temp a lovely 62.9 and sunny, 23% humidity, breezy at times.

Headin' for Texas (Katy and San Antonio) tomorrow for a first girl-cousins visit. Don't think I'll get any hiking in, but it will give me a chance to see if my hip feels better after a week's rest.

Plan A from yesterday since my phone was fully charged. I just wanted it to get pictures. I decided to start from the official 40th St TH and to hike in the afternoon as the temp was supposed to be perfect with some cloud cover and wind; what more could I ask for.

I headed up the wide and rocky trail that goes to Peak 2429 and also takes you to the junction with Trail 100 where I hung a right (west) to hook up with LV Yates #8 where I hung a left and headed south. The brisk wind was pretty chilly when it gusted but the sun kept me warm. The trail is fairly nice as I continued until you start going up. Besides being green all around you, now the bit of poppies and lupine started showing up in the same area it did last year. I would encounter hikers coming down and one passed me on the way up to the saddle.

And now to switchback my way down and over to the old road/trail leading to Ruth's house. It seems like it's taking a long time to get this house finished. I took some pictures of the poppies as I made my way closer on the trail that takes you to the house. I am always impressed with the landscape around the house with all those fabulous Organ Pipes. I then headed west on Ruth Hamilton Trail. I would encounter a few hikers. When I hit the intersection with the #8 trails I decided to go up the hill to the next saddle just to get some more elevation. That's not the easiest in a couple sections; especially since I'm having such trouble with my right leg.

Once I got to the saddle I remembered the trail I saw when coming up 8B a while back. A couple hikers were sitting on the top bench and offered to give me a spot to sit but I told them I wanted to investigate this trail. The gentleman said he had taken it one time and it wrapped around... I thot he meant clockwise but it wraps north and west. The narrow trail (my name for today: New Discovery) contours alongside the mountain and has a little up and down until you finally come to a nice saddle. From here I could see the next area that the partially shaded trail led to. It had some tricky spots and I kept wondering if I would have to go back the same way.

I encountered the two hikers and their dog that were on the saddle in front of me. I fully expected to turn around. I looked around and noticed another trail that went west so I thought I would check it out, which is what I continued to do. Every once in awhile it looked like the trail would end but each time it continued, though a bit dicey at times. The question was, where would it end up :-k . Finally I would see the trail ahead of me that would end at the saddle of the 304/8. Well that was fun. This is the third time this year (two of them in this Preserve) that I've found unmarked trails to follow.

I took the Nature 304 down and the connector to 302 and instead of doing the VOAZ which was in shade, I opted to head east to Perl Charles #1A and do the eastern part of the shoe. It's a gradual trail and goes over two saddles, so just right. It's very green through here as I made my way north and then east to hook back up with Charles Christiansen 100. It was a lot longer than I thot before I got back to the trail back to the TH. Still quite a few hikers and dogs out and about, but the lot was only half full.

WATCH 5.82 miles, 2:37-4:58PM burning 953 calories. 1517-2012 elevation. 132 Avg bpm/159 max. 9% Zone 4 Anaerobic (149-167bpm), 44% Zone 3 Aerobic (131-148bpm) 46% Zone 2 Weight Control (112-130bpm). TEMP was a lovely 68 degrees, partly cloudy, breeze and 34% humidity.

Early morning hike in the Phoenix Preserve. Started from the 40th St. TH around 6am. Wanted to do this loop as described and the only way to do that was to download the gps route. There are far too many use trails to be able to do this loop any other way. This was great practice for using my Garmin to follow an uploaded route. I had to backtrack 5 times to follow the intended route. Most of the these trails I had been on at some point in time, but it’s been awhile since I visited this area. Made me realize that I need to try to visit each park at least once a month to stay up to date with what is happening with that system. Looked like the Freedom trail was getting some trail maintenance performed and some of the trail posts had new decals on them. Interesting loop that covers a good portion of the park.

I started from the 40th street TH on a CCW loop I drew up and made my way over to the Circumference Trail. A MTB'er said to me, good to see you again. I said huh? He said I saw you here yesterday. I said, not me. He said, then you have a doppelganger. Look out world, there are two of us.

The climb on the Circumference Trail is in much better shape, than when I last did it 8 years ago. They've even put in numerous steps to keep the washouts to a minimum.

On the climb to the peak, you pass the normal mish-mosh of first-timers, snowbirds, speedsters, boom-boxers, yoga pants in check, yoga pants stuffed to the max, etc. etc. On the way down, the Route Scout birds went off announcing the mileage. A mother and 10ish YO daughter were on their way up. The mother remarked to her struggling daughter, "See the birds are singing to you". "I don't care about the stupid birds". No Teva Joe's were spotted.

I continued across on the Mohave and Mohave Connector Trail, with views into the small cookie cutter homes. Now on the home stretch I headed back to the lot on the Quartz Ridge Trail and YV Yates

Not as high of concentration as other places in the area, but plenty of Scorpionweed, poppies, Dichelostemma capitatum, fiddleneck, Lupine, brittle bush, Rock Daisy, Creosote.

Feb 25th, Saturday: Yates, Ruth, VOAZ, Happy Hour Ridgeline Loop. Wanted to get in a nice hike after lollygagging picture-taking part of my hike yesterday.  Little did I know, it was going to happen again.  I hadn't been here since December so I was also curious to see how green it was and it was. I parked at 38th St.  I thot I would see more cars on Saturday afternoon but I didn't.

As I made my way zig zagging over to LV Yates Trail, I took several pictures of this lower area, mostly to document the greenness as we don't know when it will quite be like this again.  I made the junction off of the 100 and headed south on 8.  It was very green and lush of course but then.... yes, poppies.  They started just as the ascent to the saddle began.  AND, on both sides of the trail.  So, somewhat reluctantly, I threw in the towel and decided to take movies :stop: .  There were several hikers coming and going and their doggies so I worked around them.  The poppies were interspersed so no big groupings, yet.  Stay tuned.

I reached the saddle after taking a picture of that huge quartz rock.  I started down the other side and noticed Lupine and Scorpionweed.  The bright sunlight made it difficult to photograph the low lying flora even though to my eye, it was a pretty scene.  I fiddled with my brightness bar to see how that would work but wouldn't really know until I got home.  The 8 goes right (west) but I headed up the 136th Street hill toward the new house they are building.  And yep, there it was, masses of poppies on both sides of the trail :) .  There were other little flowers but your eyes are immediately drawn to all that yellow.  I liked the poppies on the upside hill as they were easier to photograph.  There were the other co-stars too and purple and yellow go so nicely together.

The poppies finally gave way as I headed up the hill. I noticed a gentleman with a McDowell Preserve blue shirt on and I jokingly asked if he was lost.  He is a steward over at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.  We talked about the wildflowers including the stunted growth and he suggested maybe the freeze was a reason.  I discussed coming over for some interpretive hikes but that I like to get in a good hike if I'm going over there. His companion suggested I do the hike I want to do before the event and then attend the hike so you don't have to worry about the time.  I continued my hike and as I headed down the pavement to Ruth Hamilton I noticed that they had removed the people size guard rails.  I took pictures of some of the progress on whatever it is they are building; still wish they would have put in a Bar.

I turned onto Ruth Hamilton.  Here you have a good view into downtown but it wasn't super clear today.  As I got up the hill I got some more pictures of the structures going in.  I took 8A Quartz Ridge Trail northbound.  It is very scenic with all the cactus and such.  There were a few hikers on this trail too and the desert floor was pretty green but light on wildflowers.  I went through the wash a couple times and intersected back on 8 and headed west.  Once again you get to see the wide expanse of the green desert floor and hillsides.  I always like the cactus in this area as well.  I headed up the hill to where the trail starts getting rocky and crossed to the 304 and then a use-trail over to the 302.  I did notice that there are two ways to get on this connector trail off of the 304.

I took the 302/304 north to the main junction that includes 1A/304.  They have six stickers on this post indicating directions of each.  I was heading upward on the 1A/302 to catch the VOAZ.  I always like the boulders at the junction with the VOAZ which I would be taking.  I encountered a few hikers as I made my way to the saddle and then into the shade of the north side of the mountains.  There were some wildflowers as I made my way down, especially poppies in the center section.  Instead of taking the 1A (that's where the sticker comes in),  I took the hill off of the VOAZ as it was in the sun.  I had planned a little different route back to the TH but I was running late so opted to circle around Happy Hour Ridgeline.

There were some little wildflowers on the hillside.  I crossed over 100 and continued around the hill. The wildflowers had pretty much disappeared in this area and the northside of Happy Hour Ridgeline.  I noticed a helicopter and it circled an area around 40th St several times.  I would later see flashing lights at the 40th St parking lot when I turned on to 40th St.  There is a hill to the northwest side of 36th St that has a trail on it.  One of these times I should take the time to check that out.  I did spot an Anna's Hummingbird on a tree branch just like I had at Lookout earlier in the week and both times toward the end of my hike.  What was really funny though is HAZel was announcing my mileage beginning with the sound of Anna's Hummingbird!  I laughed so hard  .

Once again, I took lots of pictures and movies.

Met up with Denny for a jaunt around North Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

It's been awhile since I've done anything out here. I have to make a point of getting out here more often. It is a pretty area with interesting geology and numerous (x10) options. It's hard to tell what trail you are on out here with all the social trails.

It got extremely windy out there. Brittlebush, poppies, fiddleneck, scorpionweed are all early in their bloom.

Good to catch up with the Turtle. Like Zeppelin, he Rocks!

Attempted this outing while recovering from horrific medical issues late July 2021. Started from the wrong side of lot and didnt even resemble the route.

Returned Jan. of 22 as a plan C. Started correctly this time but got off track w/o route. Well, with limited time b4 meeting up with fam, was eyeing the same route I drove to a year ago. This time I spotted both it and Dreamy Draw Park are still closed a year later online. Really?

Finally was able to successfully follow this route. From easy to challenging and with 2 small peaks, this trek winds through varied terrains. Solid outing gave the impression I had hiked further.

Changed my approach to doing the shoes and headed up toward Happy Hour Ridgeline. Been a long time since I've been up there and ran into ten other people and two dogs as well. It was a sweet little climb and then I headed over to the Blacksmith's and hit up Irregular 1C to the south saddle and back down. Didn't see anyone else during this shoe.

VOAZ 1B was a climb up in the shade where I passed one person and then encountered two others on the way down. Over to the last shoe Perl Charles 1A where I encountered one bike rider and then another fellow at the saddle who wanted to know if he could loop around. Two other gals came up the other side to join him.

I finished off the hike by getting off the shoe and heading to the northeast and onto the 100 before crossing over the wash and back to where I parked off of 38th Street. It was a lovely day for a quick hike with lots of ups and downs.

WATCH: 2:01-4:10PM, 5.6 miles, 1517-2010 elevation. 135 avg bpm/160 max. 38% Zone 5 max, 39% Zone 4 anaerobic, 22% Zone 3 aerobic burning 889 calories. Starting temp a lovely 66.1 and sunny, 17% humidity

There was a lot of buzzing going on with the Palo Verde blooming all over the place. And it was loud buzzing; made me a little nervous actually. Kelly would not have liked parts of this hike, that's for sure. But for most of it, when I was in the center of the Preserve, all was quiet except for all the hikers and many, many bike riders; after all, it's Saturday morning.

I did feel the humidity at the start and my gluteus maximus was still pretty sore so it was probably a good thing I didn't do my Barbell Strength as getting up from that first squat would have been doubtful  . And thus, I had to change my grandiose route I had somewhat planned the nite before. However, I did find some new territory as I tried to incorporate a little elevation from time to time. I started at 38th St TH and headed west and around the hills of Happy Hour Ridge all around to the west side and then back up the middle and down, (south) over to 1A where I was just going to hike to Irregular C junction and back.

I saw another trail over to the NW and don't recall that I've hiked over there before but if so, it's been quite some time. I think I was on part of the Dreamy Draw Nature Trail (FYI that TH is still closed but I think they are close to finishing up that new pipeline). The traffic noise is pretty loud here. I checked out this little ridgeline and wondered why Karl and Kathy don't use this as the Happy Hour meet up. In fact, there is a nice flat spot to lay out the goods they bring. So that inspired me to call Cathy to see if she was home as I was a hop, skip, and jump from her house but she was heading out of town. So I looked around some more and checked out another ridge when I realized it looked like there might be an old filled-in mind adit that I was passing by and it was surrounded in quartz too; you can actually see that quartz on satellite view.

I headed back the way I came and back up on to 1A where I felt my gluteus had stretched out enough to do VOAZ so I proceeded up that behind four bike riders. The last rider had stopped to gather his strength and then pedaled as fast as he could to get up this one section; he made it without stopping. It was funny to watch. I gave him kudos at the saddle.

I went down the 302 and then over on the 304 making a mental note to take the 302 down to Piestewa Park one of these times. As I headed west, I gave thot to doing a U of the 304/8 but I decided I was hungry so headed back north off of the 304 to the eastern shoe of the 1A. As I came over the saddle by what is called the Valley Throne, the color of the Palo Verde was lighting up this valley. I think I got one good picture of it as the show was fabulous; it would get particularly noisy as I made my way east near the drainages where many of these trees were abuzz with BEES!

I crossed over the drainage and by it where the sound of the bees was so loud I thot to maybe record it but you've all heard it before. Needless to say, I picked up my pace a bit. So far I've been lucky in my life as I've never been stung by a bee. It was another good hiking morning in the Valley of the Sun; better enjoy it while I can and it really is so much better than going to the gym.

WATCH: 6.43 miles (low point 1480, high point 1922) avg 126 bpm, 151 max (30% Zone 3, 59% Zone 2 and 11% Zone 1) burning 968 calories finishing at 10:14AM. Starting temp a lovely 60.7 degrees and sunny with 30% humidity.

Went to perl charles trail #1a only to find it is closed. Yes I proceeded past the sign to find both paths fenced off 😠 Next headed over to dreamy draw park. Also closed with entire road blocked off 😒

I then went to the N PHX preserve to find it overflowing with vehicles. I parked in the street & started on the opposite side of the parking lot from the majority 🙂 Avoiding the Yates trail led to less people yet.

Continued W & then S. Now in the mtns it became difficult for me to follow the write up since I didn't have the track. Was unable to DL it since I'm out of data again 😣 I then paved my own route. I ended up coming across the 1a trail I had originally sought out.

Continued past the VOAZ jct but would like to return there for a future outing. Past Irregular Link & onto the 220. Then down toward a busy road. Did a mini loop & then began the route back as the sun began to drop. Took a slightly different route back. Ranger locked the bathroom just after I walked out.

From 38th St I headed west and up and over the far west side of Happy Hour Ridge/1955 Mountain and then up to 1A. On the way I encountered a dad and his sons doing a loop similar to mine. He was kind of leading but not as he couldn't really keep up with the teenagers. We all would pass by each other a few times during the hike.

The three horseshoes: From 1A, I did Irreg C (first shoe) up to the top and back down as I hate going down that 302. I continued on 1A to VOAZ (second shoe) and did the same, hiked it up and over to 302 and back. By this time 1A was all in shade so it was darn nippy. I continued on 1A Perl Charles to complete the third shoe and went straight at The Throne so on the way back I took the upper (west) layer. I had planned to hike back across the whole shoe but since it was in the shade, I decided at The Throne to head south to stay in the sun for my hike back to 38th St.

So I ended up taking part of what is called, the North Phx Preserve Mystery Loop back around the mountain. When I got to the 100 I decided I hadn't been to the 40th St TH for awhile so I took that back instead of heading directly toward 38th St, thus giving me a nice hike of around eight miles.

It was interesting to see some of the quartz areas in the shade as it almost looked like snow with the subtle light (see photos)... or maybe it was because I was chilled from time to time so it felt like snow  ; and if so, that's my kind of snow! There were a lot more hikers and bikers than I expected to see on a Sunday afternoon. Some were friendly, some didn't seem as friendly. The trails are in pretty good condition and you can tell where they've laid rock to stabilize? the tread. And, as usual, I saw some other trails that I might like to try in the future.

While I was sitting having my Huck beer, a couple horse back riders passed behind me heading for the Preserve as well as other hikers and bike riders. I guess we're now in holiday mode. Lucky for me now, every week is holiday mode.

WATCH: (2154 high point, 1511 low point) 135 avg bpm, high 166 (17% in zone 4, 32% in Zone 3, 51% in Zone 2 --- it's taking a bit to get used to the major zone adjustments they made in Samsung Health app) burning 1249 calories. Starting temp was 68 and 17% humidity finishing at 5PM.

Hello again. Ive been absent due to serious medical conditions. Due to freakishly pleasant weather, I was able to hike in PHX during July! Trying to get back in the saddle again, this outing sounded reasonable. But of course, I botched it.

Started on the LV Yates trail. I passed the 1st jct & turned right on a thin side trail. I then started realizing I was hiking on a bike trail. It ended up connecting to #100 which I was on briefly. I wound around some houses, up a peak and then hit a dead end below near the houses.

I ended up taking #8 back. I entered the parking lot from the opposite side. I then realized I was sposed to start from that side. Oops. I then took that initial trail I started on further up to add to the EG till the skies started storming.

BTW- a biker crashed just after we crossed paths. His face was covered in blood and he dislocated his shoulder. A lady then rode up. She was able to waive down his friend for help.

Wow, what's up with this: Clouds. A nice breeze. Cool temp. Is Fall really here? Trick or Treat👻🧹👺🎃

I had a couple different routes in mind but wanted to tackle 8B so today was the day. From 38th St TH I headed for VOAZ which is a favorite of many of us who hike out here. From there it was over to 304. Saw a bunch of bike riders resting at the junction. In fact, quite a few bike riders and hikers, leashed and unleashed dogs were out this morning but there was also a lot of time when it was just me.

I haven't hiked up 8B in so long that I don't remember the last time. I had planned to come at it from 8 but changed my mind and followed 304 all the way to Joe's parking lot and then cut over to 8B and started heading up. It has a couple steep areas but not as bad as I remember from coming down it the last time.

Once you get to the saddle there are lots of people as this is an intersection where you have a few different choices. Mine would be the lovely Ruth Hamilton over to the paved hill. Today I could see all the way to Picketpost from the paved hill. They have planted some palo verde trees along side the road and have taken down the sign that used to be at the driveway of this house so maybe it sold. I guess time will tell.

I always think it is down hill from the house but there is a little up before the downhill ensues. And instead of taking 8A to the TH, it was so nice, I decided to extend my route and continued to the west and toward 8 once again. I ended up on the lower part of 1A. As I headed off the north side of 1A it seems they have laid a bunch of new rock on the hill part; it's a pain to walk downhill on. Once I hit the first junction I went down the steep little hill and around and up across Happy Hour Ridge and back to the TH. That last part of the hill up to the ridge is steep but very short. I haven't taken it in a while either so I was glad to check that one off. On the way down I saw two lizards.

Now I would start encountering more bike riders and hikers and something I haven't seen before; a gal was walking (leading) her horse.

I forgot my beer again ](*,) and I thot of it last nite but forgot to remind Alexa. Oh well, one of these times I'll remember.

Watch: 7.17 miles in 2:58. Avg speed 2.4 MPH, Avg heart rate 132 BPM, max 159. (52 minutes at Max (5), 1 hr 8 min at Anaerobic (4) and 56 min at aerobic (3)) 1222 calories burned. 62.5 degrees at 32% humidity (definitely felt the humidity) at 10:39AM.

It was a beautiful morning for a stroll in the Preserve; it's easy because it's close to home and I wanted a short hike before it got too hot. Well, it was quite a surprise when I heard thunder and it started to rain on me! :o It rained pretty good for maybe half an hour then on and off the rest of the hike. With some nice breezes. In May! The smell of wet creosote was so strong and pleasant. I loved it!
This hike was a variation of the North Phoenix Preserve Mystery Loop that visits a couple peaks, a ridgeline, parts of trail 100, 1A, and the VOAZ Loop. It goes through quieter areas of the Preserve. I started from the cul-de-sac off Dunlap.

The Saguaros were getting their crown of flowers on top pretty good now. Lots of bees buzzing around.

This was actually Plan C.
From 38th St TH. It was actually a bit nippy out for my mid afternoon hike. When the sun was out it was fine. Still on the last stages of recovery from my cold; was still sneezing a bit on the 24th. Can't wait for this to be over so I can rebuild my strength; I have been going to gym classes though.

The trail was nice from the inch of rain it got the previous day. I had a more ambitious hike (well for me anyway  ) in mind but went with this instead. The light was dancing all around me as I skirted the south flanks of Happy Hour Ridge. The brittle bush was a hardy bloomer even though there really isn't that much out here.

I was pleased to spot some Lupine and a few Poppies, some Fiddleneck and Desert Hyacinth (Dichelostemma capitatum). I had brot my camera with me so I decided to take some photos of the start of the flower show. The trail is in good shape all the way around. I only encountered about a dozen people for the day and many dogs. There were a couple horse back riders out and they were leading another unsaddled horse; not sure what that was about.

On the way back on the north side I saw another trail to maybe get this route up to 3 miles for my lazy days. Need to get a little more elevation on it next time. Hopefully this weekend I'll be back to the Goldfields to pay my respects to The Mask.

Hit the Preserve for some exercise today. Parked at the 40th st trailhead as it's close to my house. I have done pretty much everything in this area, or so I thought. So it's fun to find new paths to travel. This whole route pretty much avoids the crowds at Piestawa, Dreamy Draw, and 2-Bit, so that's good for solitude. I tried to follow the official route as best I could, but still missed a few turns here and there. Hard to get lost out here, but easy to get confused  Fun little hike in the heart of the Preserve! :)
