Decided to ride White Tanks this morning. Mixed it up and Parked at the recently remodeled Area 4, very nice! There's a short connector trail over to Mule Deer, then Ford Canyon for a bit to Mesquite, Waddell, Ironwood, Gray Fox over to the Comp Loop. Skipped the Tech Segment today. So happy to make it up the switchbacks today! Made my way back to Gray Fox after completing the Comp Loop, then Ironwood, Ford Canyon back to Mule Deer and Area 4 parking. Saw a rattlesnake in the bushes in the horse staging lot. Passed 2 hikers and a biker on the Comp Loop. Various other hikers a 2 bikers on the other trails. Made a stop at the windmill pond. Got started after 7, heat wasn't too bad, there was a nice breeze.

Decided to pay a visit to the White Tanks and do a flat lasso involving the Mule Deer. Parked near the bathrooms, near the Bajada Trail road crossing. This, or the Mesquite TH (near the Windmill) is the best place to park if you’re trying to keep miles to a minimum. (You can also park at the South TH or the Goat Camp TH, but both TH’s have short legs that would add additional miles). Did the lasso going clockwise….Bajada to Mule Deer and then took the Mule Deer north to where it ends near the Windmill. Then took the Mule Deer south to where it ends at the South Trail. Took the South Trail up to Goat Camp. Briefly on Goat Camp to Bajada and then Bajada back to the parking area. Really enjoy all these trails though they can be a bit rocky. Trying to jog I caught one of the rocks and flailed for several yards before luckily catching my balance. You’d think with my slow jogs that wouldn’t happen. :( Made me a little gimpy, but I survived.

Quiet morning. Encountered a couple of bike riders and 1 hiker. Wildlife….just a covey of quail. Also, saw some cows that were in the park confines which was a little unusual.

Joined the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Nick, John) for a ride in the White Tanks today. Started at the Library and took Mule Deer clockwise to South, Goat Camp, Bajada, back to Mule Deer. Then over to Ford Canyon counter clockwise to Waddell and Mesquite Canyon back to Mule Deer returning to the Library. Lots of folks out hiking on the trails this morning and some bikers. Saw a couple on a tandem mountain bike, that was pretty cool. Trails were really dusty, when is it ever going to rain again?

Did an out and back from the White Tank Mountain Regional Park library on Mule Deer and Maricopa trail to Bell road with the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Bruce, Jane, Jenn, Joseph) this morning. Lots of hikers and bikers out on the trails. Surprise how many hikers I saw on the Maricopa trail section. Crazy dusty!

Met up with Dave, Rob, and Dan to ride some White Tank trails this morning and hit The Corral for lunch afterwards. Started from the library and jumped on the Mule Deer trail north to Mesquite, Waddell, Ford Canyon clockwise back to Mule Deer. Did a detour on Bajada and Old Stable on the way back to the library. Then a short drive to The Corral for a cheese burger and some outrageously delicious fries.

Started at South Trail, to Goat Camp, Bajada, Mule Deer, Mesquite Canyon, Waddell, Ford Canyon, Gray Fox, Comp Loop, Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford Canyon, Mule Deer back to South trail to complete the loop. Lots of cars in the parking lots and hikers out on the trails. Saw a few bikers too. Cattle drive going on south of big hill on Mule Deer. I was dragging today, couldn't wait to finish the loop.

Early morning run in the White Tanks. It’s been awhile since I’ve been out here and I wanted to get a loop involving the Mule Deer. Got out there just before 6am. Parked at the South TH. Did the loop with a tail CW. Went in on the South. Deceptively, smooth-rocky trail. One of those trails that where you want to run freely, but need to keep an eye on the trail because of the rocks. Briefly on Goat Camp to connect to the Bajada trail. Took the Bajada over to Mule Deer. Bajada is very similar to the South trail. Fairly flat, but rocky enough where you need to keep an eye on the trail. Lot of short, unused and/or defunct trails shoot off from this trail. When I hit the Mule Deer, I took it north to its TH and then turned around and then took the Mule Deer back to where it connects to the South trail. The only real elevation occurs at the north end of the Mule Deer and it’s gradual at that.

Great weather for a morning run. Temps in the mid 70’s. More active than I expected….2 bikers, 3 trail runners and 6 hikers. Wildlife was also nicely diverse….rabbit, chipmunk, quail and 2 deer and a buck.

Researched to figure out what part of town I could hike in without getting drenched. White Tanks looked to be the answer + a strong chance of seeing the waterfall. Mmmm, no. I would suggest trying on Tuesday.

We then did the "long" loop. After we pondered where to go next. We decided on mule deer trail. That was easy. Let's add South trail. On the way back, why not tack on Bajada trail. All of which were rather easy. Not a drop of rain fell on us.

Been hiking but have not posted in a while - headed up Ford Canyon into the wash with water and wheat everywhere. Tough slog through the sandy wash but then nice climb up out. Continued on Ford Canyon until I reached the mesquite/goat camp intersection. Decided to continue on goat camp and take it all the way down to the bajada trail and then to mule deer. Finally making my way back to Ford Canyon and back to my truck. Perfect day for a nice long hike!

Back to another one of my ongoing day-hiking “thru” hike projects: the Maricopa Trail. I suppose you could actually thru-hike it, though you’d be spending some nights in occasionally sketchy spots, like the meth campers near Lake Pleasant, or the barrios of south Phoenix. (That might explain why one guy actually trail ran all 240 miles in just under 70 hours: https://www.12news.com/article/news/loc ... 1d893c0615 ) 🤯

There is no official Maricopa Trail trailhead at I-10. There’s a ton of development going on in the Verrado area, and satellite view lags on-the-ground reality by up to three years, so the open desert at the west end of McDowell Rd. may now actually be an auto mall for all I know. Not sure of the legalities of parking in the nearby residential neighborhoods, today’s end point would be the Culver’s on Verrado Way. 🍔

Starting from the library at 7:20, the trail was quite rocky. Early on, my left pedal hit a rock. It does not take any force for the serrated grip on a bike pedal to gouge flesh. So, imagine hitting a rock, causing the pedal to snap back into your shin …

Dirt Northern Ave. was welcome relief, despite being unable to avoid a 💩.

At the Beardsley Canal, I initially started down the access road, but soon corrected. You could ride the gravel road, but the singletrack is smooth. Besides, why are you riding in nature?

The three miles south of Northern -- ha! -- were a welcome, smooth, relief. I arrived at the Jackrabbit "Trailhead" in about an hour, including photo stops.

Heading south along 195th Ave. / Jackrabbit Trail, on a weekday morning, I didn’t see anyone else on the path, shoulder, or even the odd bit of singletrack.

At the Indian School Rd. corner, there were no Maricopa Trail signs: The only signs I saw were campaign posters.

Sat view is usually three years out-of-date: Indian School shows as two lanes, no bike path. Now, there is a sidewalk and a bike lane. Because the sidewalk crosses many shopping center driveways, I instead chose to ride in the bike lane, as I figured it would give me greater visibility to a turning vehicle.

Heading through Verrado's pocket parks, I passed several joggers and dog walkers. A bridge was being built to extend Thomas Rd. into Verrado. The sidewalk was signed off, but everyone was ignoring it, so I did too. 😇

Near the sewage plant, instead of following Maricopa Trail, I instead stayed on the bike path, which briefly cut through a corner of the housing, before heading slightly downhill, under Verrado Way. I then looped right, up to the Verrado Way bike lane, following that to the Culver’s ¼ mile ahead.

There were some rather large clusters of Pectis papposa, particularly among, or adjacent to, grass or thick clusters of shrubbery. No other flowers of any kind at all. Unless you count houses in Verrado ...

Thunderstorms predicted until at least mid-day. Decided to make the trip out west anyway. Didn't look too bad at north end of White Tanks. Black at the south end. Torn whether to bail, start from the library on Olive Ave., or follow my plan: Bike 5.5 miles up to the library, turn on my GoPro, then head back, continuing on to the Culvers on Verrado Way @ I-10.

Stuck to plan.

Light rain for about 10 minutes mid-way to library. But I was sucking wind. Slippery rocks did not help. Bit off more than I could chew, considering I hadn't really biked in well over a month.

Got to library, decided to bail.

Our garage door got bashed on Tuesday, so instead of hiking on Wednesday, my normal day, I waited for the repair guy. I could have gone out later on Wednesday, but afternoon temps are already peaking into the 90s.

Heading south from Sun Valley TH, the trail is wide, straight and flat. The primary vegetation is creosote, whose flowers were fading.

After a mile, the trail diverts around a RC plane airport. I was disappointed no one was flying. The airport’s shade, shelter, picnic tables and outhouse would make a good stealth camping spot. (I saw a “Smile: Your image was just captured and xmitted to the Maricopa County Sheriff” sign, but no camera or related commo gear.)

To the west, the antenna farm atop Goldwater Peak was obvious. I’ve never been up there, though I have hiked Ford Canyon several times. The White Tank Mountains just don’t have a lot of trails. It would be nice if they put a couple of trailheads on the west side of the range. Today, at least, the mountains were also hard to photograph. It was quite windy, so maybe there was too much dust in the air. 🤔

Saguaros start appearing about 1½ miles south of the RC plane airport. (That sounds kind of awkward, but I can’t find a name for it like “Sky Harbor”.) About halfway into the hike, there is a cowbell hanging over the Maricopa Trail. The breeze was heavy enough to rattle it.

Just short of five miles south of Sun Valley Trailhead, at a jeep trail intersection, the Maricopa Trail bends sharply right along the bank of a wash.

The Maricopa Trail begins climbing ever so slightly. (The total accumulated elevation gain for the first five miles? 55 ft.) At 5½ miles, the trail reaches a combo gate, which marks the boundary of White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Just past the gate, turn left onto Mule Deer Trail. 🦌

Mule Deer Trail crosses to the wash’s opposite bank and begins switchbacking up a small hill, gaining 100 ft. in ⅔ mile. Though I was hiking, the climb is just within my MTB wheelhouse. Despite not being very prominent, the top of the climb has a surprisingly good panoramic view of the metro area.

The day had so far been pleasant, but it was starting to heat up on the final stretch of Mule Deer Trail. There were a few more mountain bikers on it, and quite a few older hikers. The only other terrestrial creatures I spotted, besides lizards were a lone cow, and a captive desert tortoise at the White Tank Library / visitors’ center.

After finishing my hike, my shuttle driving wife & I meandered back to the Loop 303. Despite all the new developments in Surprise, there were ZERO gas stations or fast food drive-thrus on four miles of Olive Ave. or at the 303 / Peoria Ave. intersection. I had to wait until I was nearly home to get lunch and an ice cold soft drink! 😢

Nothing the first five miles south from Sun Valley Pkwy. (Unless you count creosote, which are fading, and palo verde, which are peaking.) Final 2½ miles, saw one small cluster of small Mexican gold poppy, one each blooming teddy bear cholla, strawberry hedgehog and cactus apple.

It has been a long time for me. This was a very well organized and run event in the White Tanks. Very fun route and picture perfect day. We took off in small waves and i ran by myself the whole time.

felt good and pushed as hard as i could all day. Really enjoyed it out there

Expectations for Mule Deer Trail were ultra-low on the foothill location. Odds of enjoyment bottomed out upon visual realization... 50 acres torched by a wildfire earlier this year on May 21st. Turned out to be a pleasant surprise on a relaxing sunrise stroll with cool views, friendly fellow hikers, one-stalker, and a delightful tread to boot.

The Bajada Trail was considerably nicer than anticipated too. Nice washes, trees, saguaros... then again, it was morning light laced with cool jazz temps, so let's not get carried away. Bruce corrected my rookie Okie fumble pronouncing bajada. I appreciate it in hindsight, flipped my frown, and added a helper to the top of the related guide pages for the next guy.

Heading up Goat Camp Trail is a medium never-let-up grade. Cool massive boulders in an intriguing pocket of Sonoran love is cool being so close to the city. Tread in the upper reaches is y-bar ankle busters, so it's likely deemed horrible by some on the surface. No biggie ascending. Total misnomer, we did not observe any goats camping or any goats period... alas.

Goat Canyon had me at hello, views casting from upper Goat seals my four-of-five ranking for Goat Camp Trail. An abundance of dry grass in the entire range is an unavoidable nail in the Sonoran coffin, so enjoy before forever changed.

Bruce re-suggested Barry Goldwater Peak. With time and resources, it seemed worthy. We settled on halfway, saving the elusive western views for another day. Instead, we admired the 270-degree views from the old purple-dashed jeep trail on topo. That musta been one gnarly pioneer ride.

We set 3032 as the target for a lunch break but mutually settled on a nearby unofficial 2974 sub-highpoint. Back on trail we crossed paths with Betty Boop and company, took a wrong turn, and passed Betty backtracking.

I sincerely enjoyed all of the above. That said, the dryfall in Ford Canyon is the most spectacular impact most will remember.

Despite rare visits for such a nearby option, the White Tanks never disappoint.

When I lived in the West Valley, I used to hit up the White Tanks more often. Glad to get back out there again.

A 7am start and a pleasantly cool, clear morning. We saw four doe near the TH that could care less that we were there.

Mule Deer Trail was a good warm up. Good trail and an easy grade while the sun was rising.

Bajada (buh·haa·duh) Trail was easy peazy and pleasant once Joe's stalker left us.

Goat Camp has never been my favorite. Maybe because it's been warmer in the past when I've done it. A nice climb with good views today. We saw 4 more deer here. There's only one section of ankle busters on the way up. I took Joe up a wash the took us to the road to Goldwater Peak. From here we hit up the ridgeline use trail back down to Goat Camp. Once again, no goats we seen today.

After lunch, a wrong turn and a run in twice with the twins, we headed down on Ford Canyon Trail. This my favorite in the White Tanks, Interesting geology, some easy scrambling and great views. This is also where we saw most of the people on the day.

Good times

Every time I head out to the White Tanks for a mountain bike ride I always end up riding the competitive loop. Today I decided to explore some of the other trails the White Tanks have to offer. I parked at the trailhead for South trail. I followed the following trails in a clockwise direction: South, Goat Camp, Bajada, Mule Deer, Mesquite, Waddell, For Canyon, Ironwood, and returned to my truck all the way back on Mule Deer. I encountered a fair number of hikers and bikers under the overcast skies this morning. Most were super happy to see me. I know I was super happy to see them, even the ones that didn't return the super happiness. South trail and Goat Camp were a little bumpy. The rest were smooth and well groomed. Signs at all the trail intersections. Nice relaxing ride. Almost thought I was going to get rained on.

1st trip
Went out to the White Tanks to hike a few sections of trails I haven't done yet. Kept it to the flat trails with the heat being a factor these days. The weather was actually much better than last Saturday, much less humid. It was actually pretty cool early on with some light cloud cover, but later the heat started to kick in. Went through a lot of water, well over 150 oz.

I started from the end of Goat Camp Trail, then took the Bajada and Mule Deer Trails northbound to the Grey Fox Trail and headed back. Saw some bikers and trail runners early on, but by the time I was done at 11am, most everyone was already gone for the day. The burn area there from a few months ago already looks better. Still no vegetation obviously, but less black and charred.
