I had a longer hike in the eastern Supes worked up, but I had a party to attend later in the afternoon. Chris mentioned wanting to do a quick one in the Goldfields and we came up with a little loop covering some arches.

The air was crisp starting from the Hackamore Gate pre-dawn. No clouds, so it was a uneventful sunrise.
We opted to head to the Cyclops first and hiked up the a trail/wash area south of the Green Thumb. It was easy hiking along this area up to the FS1356. The Rock House Trail was a new one for me. A typical wash in the Goldfields. The hike up to the arch/window was a steep but short.

We hiked back the same way we came in and made our way to the Twin Arches "trail". The start of that was even harder than normal to find, but I've been here many times and knew the general direction. The cairned section on the other side of the wash was easy to follow, but it was the most over-grown I have ever seen it. So much vegetation out there right now.

The views up at the arches are really nice for sure. We made our way back to FS1356 and decided Top Hat and the Palo Verde Arch would be for another day as it was getting late.

A nice and easy 10 miler. Exercise, fresh air, sunshine and it's always good hiking with Chris. A good day out in the Goldfields.

Had to move my weekend hike to Sunday, so I wanted to do something close to home. Andy came up with a plan to hit the Cyclops, Twin Arches, and the arch by Top Hat. We did the first 2 and by then it was getting close to lunch time so I was ready for a belly full of food and a power nap.

The Cyclops was interesting. I almost went up there 2 years ago when it was still the Mask, but it was August and super hot, so I wasn't up for it. The peak above it has some really nice views. On our way down we found the actual trail, which I didn't know even existed. it wasn't really a bad bushwhack on the way up, especially considering how overgrown things are now with all the recent rains.

We had trouble finding the trail to Twin Arches at first, and that's because there is no trail that makes it out to FR1356. Once you cross the deep wash, the trail becomes visible and is easier to follow the further you go up. I suppose that's just as well to keep the traffic down. The views up there were phenomenal. Looking out around and even the formations and lichens on the rocks up there are really nice. We got under the eastern arch, but I didn't like how the rocks at the top of it look really loose and like they could fall at any second. I stayed away while Andy tried to step up on the pile of rocks to look through it to the city below.

We tried to take the most direct route back but got off track on the horse trails. Just as well, added a a little extra mileage and that never hurts. the weather and scenery cooperated making it pleasant to spend a little extra time out there. I saved the arch on Top Hat for another day, plenty out there to explore still.

Another visit to this interesting area. Most of the fun is the drive in along 1356. The hike up to the arches is very defined now. It's an easy up with a nice pay off.

I started in the dark and made it up to the arches a little before dawn. The colors were really nice, but not as spectacular as I was hoping. After enjoying the sun rise up near Weavers Needle, I took some more photos and video and hiked back down.

If I had more time, I would have kept going up to the ridgeline. That is an area I really need to explore.

I drove back via 3512 to the Hackamore gate. I stopped at the Green Thumb for a few minutes and then headed home to start working.

A quick morning hike out in the Goldfields. I totally cheated and drove along 1536 to the base of this trail. The hike up is easy to follow and offers some very nice views of the Superstitions.

One car at the gate when we drove out and we heard and saw no other humans while out in the desert. The drive is part of the fun. The road is rough is spots, but not too bad. Definitely need a high clearance vehicle.

I have been up here a few times before and I love the scenery. The skies were clear, but very hazy. We wanted to do a little more and I was heading over to Top Hat when my phone rang. Duty called and I had to go make some money to pay for all of this hiking, camera and off-road expense I have been racking up lately. ha ha Darn job, ruining my fun!

I will wait for some cooler temps and and give the Lesser Three Peaks area a good explore next time out.

I hadn't spent much time hiking in the Goldfields before today, but I knew there was a lot of beautiful scenery out there, so I was excited for a longer hike. It's tough to quickly put together a route without knowing the area very well since there are a maze of trails, roads, washes, and multiple trailheads, but I ended up mapping out a loop of ~13 miles, then tacked on some spurs to a few of the arches near the route.

We parked at Bulldog Canyon Gate at the end of Cactus Road and started the loop clockwise along FR 10. Our first destination was a quick spur up to Mask Arch, a nice, easily accessible natural window along the northern ridgeline overlooking Dome Mountain. We followed some of the washes and jeep roads through Bulldog Canyon, and when we crested a small ridge, the views of Four Peaks were stunning. I hadn't realized that it had snowed much up there, but the peaks were covered in white, with the snow extending quite a way down the mountains. The peaks were shrouded in wisps of clouds, and it was a beautiful contrast with the saguaros and desert landscape in the foreground--it looked like an entirely different world on the horizon.

We took another detour over to Twin Arches, and along the way we saw at least 15-20 javelina running in small groups on the hillsides nearby--I'd never seen so many at one time. The arches were another nice feature, and the views to the southeast toward the Superstitions and Weaver's Needle were fantastic.

Our next destination was Top Hat, and we got some pictures at Palo Verde Arch on the way up. The arch was actually a double, with a small window in the rock just below the larger opening. We enjoyed more great views of Four Peaks and the shifting clouds over the Mazatzals on way to the summit. I signed the register at the top and recognized some familiar HAZ names. The benchmark at the top says "Weeks" on it, and the topo map says the same thing--if anyone knows the history behind that, feel free to comment :). The 360° views from the top were tough to beat. [ youtube video ]

We made our way down a drainage to the east and hiked over to Cottonwood Spring, which had a trickle of water spilling over a full collection tank. From there, we headed toward Keyhole Arch, with more views of the Superstitions along the way. There was a lot of trash out in the desert along that stretch, including an old mattress, multiple large white bags full of something, and even some roofing materials...why anyone would go to the trouble to haul trash all the way out there is a mystery. The large rock outcropping near Keyhole Arch was covered in graffiti, which was disappointing to see, but Keyhole was a nice spot, with a natural window in the cave and a rock arch overhead.

A lot of the snow had melted off of Four Peaks by afternoon, and the clouds had mostly cleared around the peaks, so we had a different view as we finished off the loop, passing near Blue Ridge and Saddle Rock before returning to Bulldog Canyon Gate. The hike exceeded my expectations--we saw five arches (Mask, Twin Arches, Palo Verde, Keyhole), visited the Top Hat summit and Cottonwood Spring, and had fantastic views of Four Peaks and the Superstitions all day, not to mention the wildlife. The Goldfields are definitely an underrated area, a short drive from Phoenix and nowhere near the crowds of the Superstitions. There was a fair amount of ATV traffic, but we didn't see any other hikers all day in almost 15 miles of hiking.

We borrowed the route described by @dixieflyer as "Top Hat and the Arches", but didn't get to the Top Hat part of it.

We started at the Bulldog Canyon OHV Gate, and began walking up the road. We left the road to ascend Peak 2685 and checked out the views, which were impressive, and worth the detour. We headed back to the road, then entered the wash and followed it to Mask Arch, which is partially collapsed. The remaining arch is really good for pictures and there are beautiful views all around.

We returned to the wash and headed to Pyroclastic Cave, which is barely noticeable from the outside, but really nice inside. We took a break from the sun, and played around at the arch near the cave.

Next we followed the wash east to a jeep road, which we exited north toward the Twin Arches. We chilled at the arches for a little bit and climbed around, then found a tiny trail back to the road. (We had gone off trail to reach the arches, but it was nice to return on the tiny trail). We had planned to ascend Top Hat, but took too many breaks and didn't have time, so we headed back to the car.

Overall it was a great day, with nice weather, excellent company, spectacular views, and no snakes.

Bull Dog Canyon, Twin Arches

My original plan was to hike down Bull Dog Canyon then up over Dome Mountain and then head over to Twin Arches. Got down Bull Dog Canyon but when I started heading up the side canyon that leads up to Dome Mountain Saddle my legs weren’t cooperating. After a couple stumbles on loose rocks and a trip I decided to call this portion off. Must be my body rebelling after all that flat land walking in Lubbock. I decided to head back and follow Bull Dog Canyon back to the Rock House Trail and head up to Twin Arches then return along the Blue Ridge Trail.

On my way down Bull Dog Canyon I followed a route I downloaded which follows the wash at times then over some low lying hills and then along the Bull Dog Canyon 4WD road. On the return trip I just followed the wash, seemed a bit easier and much more interesting. A few pools of water where Bull Dog Canyon makes its turn north but would only drink it if it were treated. Every animal in the area probably visits these pools. The rocks that make these pools possible are quite interesting looking and enhanced by the water polishing them. Once at the junction of the Rock House Trail it was 1 mile to the route to Twin Arches.

Had lunch along the Rock House Trail and then headed up to the arches. Pretty straight forward getting to the Arches even though there is no trail on the western side approach. The return on the eastern side has a trail marked by cairns. The arches are interesting but I think the best part of this portion of the hike were the views of the four Peaks to the east and the Superstitions to the south. I managed to get stung by a bee while coming down from the arches. Just some random bee that my hand must of hit. This was my first bee sting ever, only hurt for a few minutes after removing the stinger. Poor bee gave up his life for no reason. Since I had never been stung before I was thinking this is a hell of a place to find out if you are allergic to bees. I guess I’m not, I’m still here. Once back down on the Rock House Trail I took the Blue Ridge Trail back to where I started. I’m glad I had a GPS route for this portion because there are multiple trails leading in different directions, not sure where they all went. I still managed to make wrong turns because I didn’t check the GPS enough and had to back track.

Nice hike but the mid 70’s temperatures made it a bit warm. The two quarts of water I carried was enough but probably could of used more. Sparse showing of wild flowers, a few that couldn’t wait a couple more weeks.

A quick jaunt up to the Twin Arches with a friend that has been wanting to see them. I cheated and drove most of the way this time. The last time up here, I followed HikerDW's route up via Blue Ridge. This time, I just drove the Titan down 1356 to the start of the trail.

The trail is faint in spots, but still easy to follow. The arches were awesome, as usual. My friend brought his boxer/pitty mix dog and he was having a blast running around.

I think the next time up here, I will keep going and make a loop of some sort up on the ridge. So much to see in the Goldfields!

With all the masses converging on the Superstitions, I decided to explore the Goldfields this weekend. The wife and I traversed Bulldog Canyon yesterday from Bush Highway to AJ. That was a blast! This morning, I ventured out from the South Bulldog lot and made my way up to the Twin Arches.

This was a fun hike. Most or part of it is along 4x4 roads and tracks, but the hike up to the arches was pure bushwhacking heaven. I loaded the track from hikerdw and followed it off and on, but I took my time and explored this really interesting area.

I got up to Blue Ridge and hoped for a stunning sunrise over the Superstition massif, but it was very subdued this morning. Oh well, it’s still a good day when you can see the sun come up in the desert.

The arches were interesting for sure. I just love the tuff rock and the yellow lichens that usually grow on it. The path I took down was definitely much nicer than the way up. Lots of cairns marking the way. I will come back up to this area in the coming months and explore some more.

Mission accomplished – I saw the arches and avoided the crowds. I saw one group of ATVs on the road near the arches and three horseback riders near Blue Ridge. Other than that, I saw nobody at all.

I did a similar route to this last week, and decided to come back and find a couple of arches that I missed the last time.

This hike is the same name as a hike that trekkin-gecho did on 1/31/2016, and I used his GPS track as a model for this hike.

I started and ended the hike at the Bulldog Canyon OHV Gate on N. Cactus Road in AJ.

I began by taking Road #10 to the west out toward the Mask Arches. Along the way, I noticed Peak 2685 to north, and since it looked climbable I made my way to the summit. I headed cross country through the desert to a ridgeline on the east side of the peak, and took the ridgeline to the top. It was a fairly easy walk up and walk down. I did not see a survey marker at the summit, but there was a summit logbook. There were very few entries in the logbook, so Peak 2685 seems to be seldom climbed. There are some nice 360 degree views at the top, so I was glad that I climbed to the summit.

After descending Peak 2685, I continued on to the Mask Arches. From there I dropped down into a wash and went a short distance and stopped by Pyroclastic Cave. To me, this is more of an overhang than a cave. There is a small arch at one end of the cave. From there I got back into the wash, and largely followed it back to Road #1356, and took it to Top Hat.

I walked up to Top Hat from the north side -- it was a bit steep but I was on solid rock the entire way so it was an easy climb. There are some really nice 360 degree views atop Top Hat. I saw the survey marker but I did not see a summit logbook. I went around to the NW on the descent to make my way over to Palo Verde Arch. Actually I think that you could have walked on a ridgeline all the way over to the arch -- I will try that next time.

It was an easy descent from the arch back to the road, and I headed back and then went on an easy off-trail scramble to the Twin Arches -- Trumpet Arch and Echo Arch. After stopping there, I ventured through the open desert back to Road 1356 which took me back to Road #10 and back to the TH.

It was another nice day wandering around the beautiful and underrated Goldfields!

Nice hike out to the Twin Arches with the family. Lauren wanted a little off trail and Kelley wanted something moderate so this seemed to fit. Cool and breezy at the 9 AM start but it warmed up really quick. Lauren actually got some of the best shots of the arches on her phone. After a short break we headed back. Great Day!

in looking for more to explore in the goldfields, found three places of interest that could be linked together in one hike: the mask arches, twin arches and the summit of top hat
john agreed to come along on this half road walk, half off-trail hike
set out from dome mountain trailhead
first went up to the mask, following angela's recent gps route
there was a cairned path up the the arches, and the off trail had good footing and not much vegetation
followed bulldog canyon to forest road 1356, passing the rock house along the way
found the route up to trumpet and echo arches using azlot69's track
it would have been very difficult to get up there without it
as it was, we went up the hard way first, getting close to trumpet arch at a point where we lost sight of echo arch
lots of cactus and scree on a steep slope; slow going
went further west to find a way down, passing three feet from a bee hive, according to john
as we dropped, we could see echo arch, so found another route up to get up close on both sides of this one
headed for top hat, almost all off trail then eventually dropping to the road
went around top hat, then up a drainage to what i think is palo verdo arch, gaining a ridgeline and going up to the summit
this was a pretty straightforward ascent on decent terrain, and the summit was cool, too
great views of the superstitions and four peaks
windy, so we didn't stay long, taking a break back at the arch
went north toward some lichen covered rocks and then down to the road
came out near a fence, corral and cottonwood spring
john found a seep, but i'm not sure that was it
long road walk back to the truck, but plenty of good views throughout
saw one more arch on the way back, near top hat
i have tenny's book, and it's easier to make sense of his presentation after you've seen some of the landmarks
the hike took longer than i thought it would, but we found some cool stuff
stopped for burgers at the handlebar on the way home - good food :)
weather was good all day, just starting to cloud up on the road walk back
thanks for doing this one with me, john
a nice day of exploration in the goldfields

Decided to head out and find the Twin Arches, Trumpet and Echo, we have been spending this Hiking Season (fall of 2014 and the spring of 2015) exploring the Goldfields. What a Treat 8) Got out my trusted steed and off to the top of the loop of Orohai Trail, parked and headed up. Arches are hard to spot until your near them. We hiked out past them to check on a rather large cave ?, but couldn't or I guess didn't want to..... :scared: .. Love these Arches, can't wait to check others out. :thanx: HAZ and fellow hikers for down loading Routes with your Triplogs.

Hiking 2 days ago left me with the distinct impression that the desert was about to "bloom". this morning was the explosion of poppies sure to come after the rains of previous weeks. I took the "long way" around to reach the slickrock home of the arches and meandered, through "meadow upon meadow" of Mexican Poppies and violet ??'s. The surrounding hills were covered with green (soon to become dried brush) and the slickrock was a warm yellow in the morning sunshine. Just a totally great morning for a desert hike.

Starting from Dome Mountain Trailhead, went over the Blue Ridge past the rock house to the Twin Arches (Trumpet Arch and Echo Arch), as planned. It was such a nice morning, I went South to the Keyhole Arch and the Green Thumb. After that, I meandered back to the trailhead. I'm still sorting out how I got place to place; there was a lot of off-trail exploration.

Saw a fox up on the hillside near the arches, and my off trail wandering paid off as I came across a whole family of javelinas including babies :D

More fun in the Goldfields! I did a figure-8 hike that was part cross country, part bushwhack and part well-travelled jeep roads.

From the parking area just beyond mm202 I headed west to scope out the Golden Hillside Area. Not much doing here. A lot of garbage, some old building foundations and shotgun shells aplenty. So it was cross country in a northwest direction, dropping out to where FR1356 meets the Packsaddle Trail.

Continuing west on FR1356 (Rock House Trail) I spotted a red-tailed hawk perched atop a saguaro. He was just patient enough to let me snap some photos. I also saw my first butterflies of the season.

After crossing Orohai Wash I ran into another group of hikers who were scouring the hillside looking for Echo Arch. Having never been to this area of the Goldfields before I wasn't much help. I knew there were arches in the hills, but I wasn't sure where and didn't know what they were called.

Moving on I spotted some contractor ties leading the way up the slope. I figured they would either take me to the summit or to the arches. Turns out they led to the arches. The arches are next to each other but they sit at a perpendicular angle so photographing them together is difficult. Eventually the group of hikers I passed caught up with me at the arches. They explained that the arch you can see through is Echo Arch. I don't recall the name of the one higher up on the cliff. I'll have to consult the Tenny book when I get a chance.

After taking some photgraphs and bidding my fellow hikers adieu I bushwhacked my way down the wash behind Peaks 2726 & 2488. Bad idea! It's beyond overgrown and my legs are pretty scarred up because of it. That emptied out into Orohai Wash which I used to connect back to FR1356. I came back the easy, albeit unscenic way - via the Rock House and Tomohawk Mine trails.
