My cognitive neuroscience podcast said learning is a trigger for joy. I decided to disambiguate with a new to me trail and blast off up Lost Ranch and splash down Lost Mine.

Flashes of hiking Bunyan Peak at the top of Lost Ranch. With the exception of other people, scattered rock is reminiscent of further west or SW.

Synopsis
Later realized I hiked Lost Ranch with L over four years ago. The nice thing about getting old is the gift of rediscovering.

My day started out with Harlow proudly bringing a freshly dead baby bunny into my house. After the screaming was over, and the dog was sad, I decided to go for a short hike.

Saw a park ranger riding a mountain bike near the Gila-Prospector junction. Up Lost Ranch Mine, then over to Goat Hill, the same as my weekend hike. The air was clearer, but less breeze. I was only on Goat Hill for a second because two tarantula hawks were flying around. Seems like it’s always either them or gnats.

Retraced my steps back down. Saw one patch nosed snake along National. Just after turning onto Lost Ranch Mine, I saw a coral snake. Got three pics before it disappeared. I wasn’t certain it was really a coral snake, but Chumley said it was, then a retired reptile curator from the LA Zoo told me it was. Cool to see on SoMo. What’s kind of interesting is, about ten years ago, Wyatt saw a similar looking snake near Lost Ranch. I didn’t see that one, so cannot say what order the color of the bands were, but my friend from the zoo said it’s very possible there’s a small population of coral snakes in the drainage of the Lost trails.

Good workout. I wish LRM had a little less loose rock, because I would prefer this over Pyramid as my early morning summer workout hike when I’m forced to be in AZ.

Tibber got me hooked on podcast, aka audio crack. I realized that instead of ducking(lowering) other audio on Route Scout, silence when RS is speaking is preferred for podcast. After over a week with several AI agents, I couldn't get it to work on iOS, so it's strictly an Android option in RS settings.

Podcast are cool but I really need to get back into my Sinatra Metallica mix before I graduate to TED talks or bottom of the barrel talk radio.

Last week @JuanJaimeiii gave me a great Route Scout newbie perspective. As a result, a key stat should be stumbled upon easier.

I combined JJ's perspective to a perspective chums gave a couple weeks ago to the layout of files on the File page. I'm happy with the results but I know that just like switching columns on the homepage of HAZ, someone will go through withdrawals.

I stumbled upon Bursera Canyon recently because Telegraph was closed. Hopefully a raid to eliminate the Tesla Twins from soliciting at the trailhead.

Expecting the dullest of dull Tonto Grand Canyon or Bajada SoMo Inner Basin, I found it refreshing.

On one hand you have the constant roar of the freeway. The allure is the majesty of the Estrella's smackdab in front of you. Yeah I've seen them. Yeah I've been there but this showcases them like Humphreys approaching Flagstaff.

The cherry on top; the short canyon ascent is really cool because geology-wise it's not just rock like most of South Mountain, there's actual dirt. The top switchback catches a breeze like the ridge of Gila and the Goat Lode.

Since the name of the game at South Mountain is renaming trails I think we need to rename the Lost Mine side of Prospector to the Holy Luge. It's steep going down vs pure bliss ascending.

Unexpectedly passed a 20yo near noon heading up midway and then a guy in his 50s on the lower slope. Both had hiking poles.

After countless headaches of stopped activity recordings with Apple Watch, I finally figured out water lock is the way to go so your sweat doesn't become hidden gestures.

Perfect weather to enjoy the Palo Verde highlights.

Early workout hike, started with just enough light to not need a lamp. Up Lost Ranch Mine, which had a pleasant breeze at times. The Lost trails tend to be stagnant most of the time, so a rare breeze is always nice. Felt kind of sluggish on the way up, but I still reached National in an hour, so my pace was pretty normal for me.

East on National to Goat Hill. Great breeze along National. Very hazy/dusty, but temps were reasonable. Retraced my steps back down. I always feel like Lost Ranch Mine is the easiest of the Loat trails to descend. Parking lot was full/overflowing when I finished. Some clown was leaning against the bumper of my truck while tying his shoes, so I irritably told him “that is not a bench” as I was walking up. He jumped away pretty quickly. I don’t patience for that nonsense—if it’s not yours, don’t touch it.

Quick workout hike. Up Ruins, down LRM. Warm, but high clouds and a nice breeze.

Workout loop. Up Lost Ranch Mine, east on National, down Pyramid/Gila. Saw JJ in the big wash on Gila. Hot. Some breeze. Dirty air. Chatted with a hiker in the parking lot who had seen me near the Prospector/National junction. He and his friend were doing a double loop of the Lost/Pyramid trails. He looked remarkably like a friend of mine in Vegas, but it definitely wasn’t him.

Nice morning for a workout hike now that winter break is over for both kids. Headed up Lost Ranch Mine. At National, made a quick stop on 2484, then headed east. Side trip to Goat Hill. New graffiti up there. The big boulder that fell on Natl a few months ago has now been fully pushed off the trail. Came down Gila/Pyramid.

Tried out a new pair of Mount to Coast T1 trail runners. I liked them quite a bit—comfortable, light, good grip. If the durability is good, they’ll become part of the frequent rotation.

Was supposed to be cloudy? I saw way too much sunlight. At least it was reasonably cool.

Early morning hike at SoMo. Got to the TH a little after 5:30. A near full moon made for great night hiking. Hiked in on the Lost Ranch and did the tail that leads to National. While there I thought I would hit the little knoll just to the west of the National juncture. I kind of envision the knoll being the south’s side “Goat Hill”. Seems to be the high point in the area so some decent views. On the return went down Lost Mine. Great temps again. In the 50’s. Kind of worrisome of what portends for the summer. I remember, back in the day, when I use to have to cover my plants for frost. Not a problem nowadays. No wildlife. Encountered 2 hikers about a 1 mile from the TH on the return trip.

Early morning hike at SoMo. Got on the trail a little after 6am. Encountered 3 runners finishing as I was starting. I did the Prospector Loop with a tail to the National. Went up Lost Ranch Mine and down Lost Mine. Great temps, especially after several days in Camp Verde. Some nice pre-sunrise pics, but not much of a sunrise. No wildlife. Encountered 4 runners in total and 5 hikers. HAPPY NEW YEARS ALL! :y:

Got started mid-afternoon. Warm. Up Lost Ranch Mine. Some of the recent rockfall/erosion has been cleaned up. Now the trail is its normal level of steep and rocky.

East on National. Gross air. Goat Hill. Nice breeze with clouds moving in. Came off the east side of the Goat Hill summit. Way too overgrown, spent some time picking sharp vegetation out of my socks. Down Pyramid/Gila. A few raindrops in the final half mile and on the drive home. Good workout.

Got out for a hike with my oldest son and his wife, in town from NC. The location of the Bursa TH has changed since the last time I hiked here.

We attacked this balloon loop CCW, hitting up the steady climb on Pyramid Trail to the National. After a break atop Goat Hill we made our way down what I think used to be called the Eliminator Trail (Now part of the Prospector Loop). First time on the trail and was surprised by the lack of switchbacks.

Pretty quiet out there with only a handful of hikers.

Workout hike. Lost Ranch Mine has some moderate erosion, mostly on the lower half. Obvious flooding in the wash. East on National, with a stop at Goat Hill. One boulder rolled down onto the trail, forcing you to scoot around it. Came down Pyramid/Gila, which also had some erosion. Lots of those gross caterpillars. Very humid. Nice breeze at times.

One of my usual workout loops. Got started around 0715. Very muggy. Very little breeze. Headed up Lost Ranch Mine, which has occasional shade. Most of the time, I didn’t know if I was crying from the misery, or if it was just sweat pouring down my face. Muddy in a few places.

Went up to Goat Hill, but the summit was swarmed by thousands of flying ant looking bugs. Turned around immediately. Continued east on National, then down Gila/Pyramid. Crossed paths with JJ near the top of Pyramid. Had a few patches of shade from clouds on the descent, which was quite nice.

Workout hike with Daniela. Gorgeous weather. If it was always like this, I wouldn’t complain all the time. Or I’d at least have to find other things to complain about. Up Pyramid/Gila, west on National, side trip to Goat Hill, then down Lost Ranch Mine. Didn’t see many other hikers.

Another day, another workout hike. Got started around 0800. Once again, school/practice schedules limited my hiking time. Headed up Lost Ranch Mine. Hot. Didn’t feel as tired as Monday morning. West on National, then down Ruins. Quite a few cars in the lot, but I didn’t see many people.

Jill and I got started from the Bursera TH a little before 0630. Lot was full, so we had to park on the road, which has a bunch of new No Parking signs that have gone up in the last few weeks.

It was already warm as we headed up Lost Ranch Mine. Occasional shade helped. East on National. Jill was not interested in Goat Hill, so we skipped the side trip. Came down Gila/Pyramid. Very warm by the time we finished around 1000. Nice to get some halfway decent mileage.

I haven't done the Prospector Loop, Lost Ranch or Gila Trails in 14 years (back when one was called Bees Knees). once I found the new trailhead, I started on the Bursera to the Gila, then up Lost Ranch, down the west trail of the Prospector Loop, then immediately back up the east trail of the Prospector Loop, then west on the National Trail and took the Gila Trail back to the trailhead.

The two ascents early on made for a nice workout. On the way up Lost Ranch it was starting to feel hot already, but then up on the National the breezes cooled me off very quickly. Taking the east part of the Prospector loop gave me a little more shade with the sun still kind of low. By the time I was done, it was getting a little warm.

Lots of prospects and abandoned mine shafts along the way. I discovered a new one that looks pretty dangerous. It's still cool to see these, but I'm always surprised there aren't more injuries from curious hikers.

Only saw a few people on those steep trail, most were on the National or Gila. the last mile before the trailhead had the most foot traffic. This one took a little longer with the elevation gain, but made for a nice workout hike.
