July has officially become Arizona's favorite month, because this is the time to see baby longnosed snakes out! It's like Christmas in July but for all religions. People are setting their alarms @ 2am just get a glimpse of them crawling in our deserts. I happened to beat the crowds by going at 1am.

The desert was still a bit damp, so toads were out, too. As a bonus, baby coachwhips are hatched also. I usually don't see baby coachwhips until August, so that I was a nice treat this morning.

Lazy Sunday morning hike. Started just after 6:30am. Took Dmitri with me out for this one. We stayed on the level trails so it was pleasantly easy. After the steep hike the day before, I was very pleased to have absolutely no soreness in my legs at all :y: .

Saw some owls on the Cat Peaks and got a good shot of one. Saw a hawk on a saguaro just after that. Nothing else really to speak of. Finished up before 10am and got over 8 miles in, which I was pretty happy with. Got a pizza for lunch and took an afternoon nap on the couch (kind of) watching the Pirates lose. Weather was still nice, the real heat hasn't hit yet, plus our early start helped.

Little bit of a later start than usual for me, kind of a lazy day hiking. Did a loop on the flatter trails, doing some zig zagging north and south between the Blevins and Levee Trails. Lots of water and a little leftover hail from the storms the night before. Saw a coyote and a hawk. Only a few other hikers and shockingly no bikers. A couple more hikes on the Blevins Trail and I'll my first big red dot on my triplog map.

I had not hiked the southern trails in Usery before. Pretty flat. Beautiful desert.
Frosty as we started and there was even a little ice out there.
Lots of bunnies and birds observed, including a Harris hawk on a saguaro.
Good hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Sunday morning hike just to get some miles in instead of my usual morning jog. Started from the Meridian/Bulldog Pass TH just before dawn and didn't need a headlamp. Headed east on Meridian Mystery until the sun hit the horizon and then turned around and headed into Usery Park and did a loop and then back to the car. New numbered trail markers are at the Meridian Mystery and other trails outside of Usery. Also 2 new interpretive signs showcasing the geology of the area. Saw one hiker outside of Usery, and a few more inside. Surprisingly not many bikers. Overall traffic was rather low, which is surprising considering how nice the weather was.

I had something to attend Saturday but the time got moved back from 10am to noon. My original plan was to go jogging early Saturday, but once the time was moved, it made more sense to pick a quick hike close to home. Usery is one of the closest options, so I picked the biggest loop in the flat trails.

I got to the gate at 5:45am to find that they open the park at 6. First time I was aware of this. Started from Area 10 and did a loop of Blevins, Chainfruit, Lost Sheep, Moon Rock, Levee, Spillway, Ruidoso, County Line, Meridian and Blevins again.

It turned out to be a more interesting hike that I had expected since I saw about 3 small packs of coyotes while I was hiking along the Levee Trail. One would cross on the top of the levee and then I would see a few more below running through the trees and chollas. At one point one pack I saw earlier started howling and the others responded. it made for an interesting show.

then on the County Line Trail I walked up on a small herd of deer that were sitting right on the trail. They took off but then took their time, giving me the chance to get some pics.

Cold to start, then warmed up quick once the sun hit the horizon. Mostly sunny throughout the morning. Nice to see the green grass carpet covering most of the ground. Finished up in 3.5 hours, averaging a good 3 mph.

Between the heat and having to get some chores done, I opted to hike as Usery. I hadn't hiked the Crismon Wash Trail in several years, so I made sure to start off with that. I hiked a convoluted loop out to the end of the Ruidoso Trail and then back along the Channel Trail and other lower elevation trails in that area. Saw an odd looking lizard that was a bit larger than most others you normally see. Finished up in 4 hours and got on with the rest of the day's chores.

Parked by the AJ airport, for model planes that is, headed northwest using several trails. Mostly all hard packed dirt with minimal rocks and a gradual incline heading toward the Usery Park nature center. This route could be ideal for jogging otherwise it’s a nice stroll through pleasant desert scenery, lots of nice Saguaros. A few polite bikers to avoid, not too busy with other hikers. Just to get a bit of elevation hopped up to the top of Cats Peak. No wildlife noted except small lizards.Another nice day to be out and about.

My checkup at the eye doctor revealed that I had a possible partial detachment of my retina, so I had to have semi-emergency laser surgery on my eye Wednesday morning. No big deal on recovery, except that no strenuous activities for one week. Hiking is out but walking is OK :-k . Hiking the level trails at Usery is pretty much an easy walk, so I went there because it was so close to home. From the main trailhead staging area, I hiked a loop just under 10 miles: Blevins-Meridian-County Line-Ruidoso-Spillway-Levee-Moon Rock-Lost Sheep-Chainfruit-Blevins.

At the start and for the first hour or two, there were hundreds of tiny frogs all over the place. Must be due to the heavy monsoon season. By the time the clouds cleared and the sun warmed things up, they disappeared.

Along the Ruidoso Trail there was a diamondback lying across the trail. I started to take a picture of it, and then 2 older guy bikers were coming the other way. I started waving and yelling at them to stop since the snake was lying completely across the trail. The first biker made absolutely no attempt to stop or slow down and ran the snake over. As he passed me he glibly said "What's that, you have to speak louder". I told him he ran over a snake and he had another glib response. Then his buddy right behind him also ran the snake over. At this point I let the expletives fly and they kept on their way. : rambo : It's a wonder they didn't get bit. The snake slithered over to the nearest tree, buzzing the entire way. Not sure how injured it was. I managed to get another picture of it under the tree.

Saw two young coyotes hanging out on the Levee Trail looking for breakfast. Mostly bikers on the trails, but still a few hikers.

Exercise hike along a couple of the trails in the south section of Usery MRP. I parked off McKellips Rd and 105th Street and set off.

The temps were in the 90's, but it was a pleasant hike. I saw a couple mountain bikers and another hiker that was singing loudly (and off key) to some groovy music on her headphones. No snakes (bummer), but I did see a roadrunner, a bunch of bunnies and a hawk.

The sunset was very muted. Got in my almost 5 miles and the fresh air and exercise I was looking for.

Met Tom near Meridian & Levee and got started around 0800. North on County Line trail, then a short distance on Meridian trail, before taking the pavement north to the end of Meridian. Headed up Bulldog Saddle trail on the eastern half of Peak 3004 Loop. Nice views from here and the trail is pleasant as it winds its way down from the saddle and then west around the north side of the mountain.

Once at Pass Mtn Loop at the next saddle, we headed north around Pass Mtn. Once on the northwest side of Pass Mtn, we found some boulders to sit on for a snack break. After that we headed south to Usery, where there were plenty of other hikers out enjoying the nice day. From the parking area, we headed east on Blevins, then Cat Peaks Pass. South on Spillway, then Ruidoso to finish out the loop.

Great weather today, nice breeze and very clear air. Not much in the way of wildlife. Good to see Tom again, and nice to get some miles in after my last few hikes have been somewhat short.

No evidence of any sort of flowers. Is this season going to be a total bust down in the desert???

Parked in the cell phone lot for the AJ airport, met up with @LindaAnn there who was lured to come along with the promise of different scenery and corny jokes. We entered Usery Park , “sadly” the iron ranger was absent today hopefully not from COVID. Heard a little voice behind me saying something like on your mark ,get set, go ,which distracted me from engaging route scout. The desert vegetation whizzed by and without seeing another soul we reached Bulldog Saddle where there was a gathering with picture taking happening. Paused briefly so I could pontificate about the various landmarks visible, Bulldog this and that mostly, told Linda we needed to get going before this group left plus she was scaring me by looking at the path up to 3108 ridgeline like it was an ice cream sundae, didn’t want to chance adding that one. Some of the saddle group did follow us but only confirmed by looking back once on the Pass Mountain trail, quietest group of 6 ladies I never heard! . We took the lower route to Pass Mountain Loop saddle area and proceeded on the loop trail. Usual nice views on this very clear day, looking over of course Bulldog Canyon toward the Blue Point Bridge. Unfortunately the wildflowers didn’t show up today, I think we saw one Chuparosa with a couple of blooms. Have learned if I throw in a couple of hilarious comments I can keep Linda off balance enough to stay ahead :D Was granted a break at the junction of Maricopa Trail where we went up toward the descent route for the ridgeline trail, took a little while to find some decent boulders to sit on near 2525, we concluded Fountain Hills fountain wasn’t functioning today. Returning to the trail after the break the number of hikers increased as we approached Wind Cave trail head and from then on. Cut through Pass Mountain trail head to get on Blevins now seeing bikers and horses. After the “long steep ascent” up Cats Peak Pass we skipped the summit ,will catch it next time. Easy walking on Spillway and Ruidoso made it possible to admire the Saguaros ,but Linda kept pointing out the doomed ones :( also pointed out the snow visible on the Catalina’s. Observed some nice loops and rolls from the model airplanes as we were exiting. The weather was perfect today, as usual enjoyed Linda’s company , she promised to subject her kids to some humor later.

It was my first time biking in the Usery area. Watched some morning lightning over the supes when I arrived. Rode on Spillway, Levee, Blevins, Chainfruit, Lost Sheep, Meridian, in a couple of non-repeating loops. On a front or full suspension mountain bike these trails would barely get your heart rate up. On a rigid drop bar gravel bike with 42mm tires and hydraulic disc brakes it's a blast. I yield to hikers when I bike and I yield to bikers when I hike. Here, hikers jump off the trail when you're 100 yards away. I've never seen anything like it. Although I was probably going to fast. Checked out the campground while I was in the area. Cats Peak probably not a good idea on a gravel bike.

I didn't feel like driving far, so I hiked close to home at Usery Park. There was a section of an unmapped trail I saw off of the Ruidoso Trail last March, so I planned out a circuit to hit that and a few other trails. Started from Area 10 and took Blevins over to the Merkle and Vista Trails, which I haven't hiked in about 15 years. A couple was having professional photographs of them with the pregnant mom in a white dress. The first born was not happy to be out in the desert at 6am. Along the Vista Trail, I could hear the kid screaming while the dad tried to keep him calm.

Headed east then south along the Meridian and County Line Trails, hit the unmapped trail, then back westward along the Channel Trail. I think I found one more unmapped trail while hiking along the Channel Trail. Not sure if I've hiked the Channel Trail in its entirety before, always seemed to get sidetracked.

Hazy most of the morning from the wildfires. Seemed a little brighter, but the haze was still there. Made for not many good pics other than the sun right at the horizon.

Radmila wanted to get everyone out for a hike since they're starting to go stir crazy from sitting at home all the time. The weather forecast was cooler than it's been, so it seemed like a nice opportunity to get a short early morning hike in. I always prefer to do a hike rather than go jogging on Sunday mornings, so I was up for it.

We started from the main trailhead staging area and headed southeast on the Blevins Trail. We continued eastbound for a bit on the Meridian Trail, then south on the Spillway, west on the Levee, north and west on the Blevins, and then north on the Noso Trail back to the car to complete the loop. No clouds like I had yesterday to keep things cooler than they really were, but there were some breezes here and there to make it bearable. Only did 4.5 miles, but that was all they could take in this weather without getting miserable, so no need to push it.
