It’s been awhile since I visited the tower. Got to the Goat Camp TH around 6:30am. Dark enough for a headlamp, though to be honest the initial part of the Goat Camp is very white and it practically glows at night. If there weren’t so many white rocks on the trail (tripping hazards) you could hike it without a light. That being, I used a light for the first 30 minutes. Goat Camp is a neat trail, but the 1 mile to 2 mile stretch is one of the rockier sections in the preserve and had me feeling my age. The turn off for 4018 is just past mile marker 3. This use trail was pretty much as I remembered it, which kind of surprised me. It’s been 8 years since I last hiked and I kind of expected it to be more defined. Still, easy to follow to the top. Took some pictures, signed the register and “chilled” at the top for a bit. Literally. The climb to the top had me sweating and there was a very steady, brisk wind that chilled me to the bone. Brrrrrr! Not a lot of activity in the register. Only about 15 signatures in the 18 months. A few HAZ references and about 3-4 trips by a Mike Bober. I guess that would explain why the trail was as faint as it was. I was amazed at the number of box warehouses visible from the peak. There must have been close to 30. That certainly wasn’t the case on my last visit.

Nice weather. It wasn’t bad until you started climbing the slope to the towers. There was no escaping the wind. Skies were clear. Good air quality. No wildlife. Encountered 10 hikers, 9 of them within 1.5 miles of the TH.

Was going to go out for NYE. Decided to cancel and hike new years day instead. 2nd year in a row I've made it out on this day. Transition complete. 🥾

My friend is recovering from an ankle injury and I had to be somewhere that night. Thus we had to keep this outing reasonable. Ended up starting by hiking Bajada Trail. Nice warmup.

We connected a mile into Goat Camp. Just after mile 3 we veered onto the social trail. This seems to be maintained. Fairly easy to follow for the final mile which packs a 1k gain. Had hiked in this park periodically for years but had never climbed to towers.

After recently hiking in the San Tan Mountain Regional Park, I'd have to admit the White Tank Mountains are growing on me. The crappy traffic involved with accessing both areas is similar, but the White Tank Mountains (plural) has so much more to offer than the flat, uninspiring monotony of San Tan Mountain (singular). If you're a trail runner, mountain biker, or one of the Gilbert Moms, then STMRP is definitely for you. If you're a real hiker, the upper reaches of WTMRP are probably going to bring you more joy. We completed both summits in under 2h 15m, which was a slower than normal pace because of the pooch (but Dese was insistent on padding some stats and adding a few new peaks). We could have finished the complete lasso loop in under 5h total, but the day evolved nicely weatherwise, so we added on a few easy, quick out-and-backs of the [ South Trail - White Tank Mtns ] , [ Bajada Trail - White Tank Mtns ] and Old Stable Trails. I suppose [ White Tank Radio Smt via Verrado/Tower Rd ] is on the shortlist now. To all the nutrition waist channels who've left garbage in the summit register, don't fret, that trash has been hauled out. NGAF about your Singapore Tourist Pass discounts or that you wear Cinch Jeans.

First, I'd just like to point out that it's named White Tank (singular, (since been changed by Admin)), but no biggie, people like exaggerating the amounts of things and size sometimes. : wink : Secondly, had to get some work done today before packing for the next canyon trip, so busting pumpkin was the order of the day. Two hours to the summit and then the bonsai descent (as in harmony, inner peace and balance). I followed t_g's meandering 2013 route, not bad, but I'd rather hike almost any trail in the Supes, rather then trek in the White Tank again (mainly because of the longer drive, I may eat crow on this point). Finally, I thought it was appropriate to summit Goldwater Peak today, the day after the Republican's mostly lousy election performance. Although, yesterday wasn't quite as bad as Barry's 1964 loss...

One last hike "out west" end of the big city.

Saw course little deer gals and four javelina...Surprised they were out and about it's chilly down here but today was gorgeous!!

Tried my hand at some bouldering off BG summit that didn't last long because I got chilled in the shade.

How I'll survive up north next week I have no idea haha

Hiked from the Goat Campground ve TH to the towers. Started a little after but still had quite a bit of shade due to the contours of the land. Not that I needed the shade. The temps were in the low 70's for most of the hike. I'm always inclined to jog the trails but I never get very far on the Goat Camp. It's too "up" and too rocky for me. Today, I made it 1.6 miles from which point I hiked the rest of the way. I think I've had better showings. Nice climb up Goat Camp. I met a couple of hikers, one by the name of Brad. He was doing some trail maintenance as he hiked cutting back encroaching vegetation. He said that, in coolers months, the park service would be widening some of the trails. Not sure about the veracity of that statement or to what extent that might mean, but I have mixed thoughts on that eventuality. If I want to run I can go to the Estrella's or Skyline Parks and have perfectly razed trails to run on. Even though I can't run (very well) on certain trails I like the variety and challenge they present. Sorry, got side tracked. Made to the top, signed the register and "enjoyed" the pollution filled skies. One of the worst I can recall seeing. It actually seemed like I was in the clouds! I couldn't see the city and all I could see was the tips of the surrounding mountains :( . No loop today. Simple in and out. Trails not packed...saw about 10 hikers. No wildlife.

I've been thinking about some hikes on the west side and decided to head over there today. I found a track from Gecko and thought it looked fun. Kyle was down so we made plans and headed out. The drive out from the east side took about an hour. It will be quicker after they complete the 303. We paid the entrance fee and were hiking soon after.

We headed up the Mequite Trail and made our way to Barry Goldwater Peak. From there we connected on the road to the Radio Summit. A sheriff helicopter flew over a couple of times. I was curious if they would come after us but I don't think they saw us. Anyways we hit the Radio Summit and headed down to the Goat Camp Trail. After that it we took Ford Canyon to the Willow Canyon Trail. I know this is a lot of trails! We continued on and reconnected onto Mequite and were back to the jeep soon after.

The White Tanks are a good drive for me. I'm glad we got a variety of trails. I doubt I ever hike over there again unless I'm in the area for something else. The trails are in good condition and the route to Barry G and down from the Radio Summit were both in good shape as well.

9L invited me on this one and since I haven't done a decent sized hike in a while, I figured this would be perfect. It was nice to get into a new area as well-- this was my first time in the White Tanks. It turned out to be a beautiful day and we hit both peaks.

Honestly, though, I wasn't impressed with this area. I can't imagine coming back.

twofold mission today:
a couple of peaks and a longer hike in preparation for the pinal 4X
thought about doing patrick's route http://hikearizona.com/gps=11459 but thought it might be a little too long for me right now
my favorite loop is mesquite willow, so i went up to barry goldwater peak via mesquite, then took the service road over to the radio summit
descended a ridge down to goat camp, took goat camp to the intersection with ford canyon, then ford canyon to willow springs trail
about three quarters of a mile off trail on each peak, with well worn and in the case of goldwater, well cairned use trails
around 2.3 miles on the road
spent a few minutes on each summit, finding the registers but no benchmarks
the road part was longer than i thought with twists, turns, ups and downs
underestimated this loop by a couple of miles
think i would do some variation on patrick's loop next time, cutting across on the road
had fun making the route work without too much repetition
nice day, quite a few people out
had a good time with mission accomplished

dry Willow Spring - White Tank Mountains Dry Dry
stagnant pool, but a good sized pool at the base of the waterfall

I had the day off and I thought I would do this close, easy hike. My bad. It was close, but it was not easy! When I got to the Goat Camp TH a little before 10 there was one couple who had just finished and one other guy just exiting the trail. I realized quickly that this was going to be rough as I worked my was up to the inner valley. The sweat was pouring off me and I had to stop several times just to get to the Summit 4018 junction! It was hot, humid, no clouds and no breeze! It wasn't until I got to the juncture that I got anything close to a breeze. Boy, did it feel good. I paced myself on the way to the summit, taking breaks as needed. Signed the summit log. (It is in need of a pencil, or at least a pencil sharpener). Last signed entry was from May 26, but that simply could be because of the bad pencil. Made good time on the return trip, though I stopped drinking my water with a mile to go because the water was just too hot. As I was exiting saw one sun worshiper (shorts and shoes and nothing else) just starting on the trail. He and the sun will have a good commune today. Saw a bunch of lizards, a chipmunk and squirrels on two separate occasions. Lost 8 pounds on the hike, but my shirt gained 5. :) Did this hike as an in and out.

This is the first of a few 20ish mile hikes I have lined up for the year. Hoping to eventually work my way up to the San Bernardino Peak Divide Trail. What better place to start?

Mule Deer - Uneventful. Tried to keep a quick pace as I started two hours later than I wanted to. Didn't know how long the day was going to be, but I wanted to stay on the safe side.
South Trail - Saw some recently eaten prickly pear pads. Otherwise, it was another uneventful mile.
Goat Camp - Despite the weight on my back, I whizzed through this section. From the junction with the South Trail to the second mile marker had to of been a personal best.
Peak 4018 - Not a soul up there. Signed the notepad with 1-23-11 as the date. A little chilly heading down the ridge. Warmed up a little more once I started moving again along Goat Camp.
Barry Goldwater Peak - The jeep road was a little difficult this time around. The service road was by far the most grueling part of the day. Quiet at the peak. Even the machinery was on the down low. Hung out up top for a while, refueled with lunch, and started the remaining however many miles. It was mostly easy terrain and a very gradual decline (except for that last climb into Ford) so it was an enjoyable stroll.
Ford Canyon - Pretty much all of the tanks in the wash have a good amount of water in them. Hopefully there will be a little more if it rains tonight. Back to uneventful walking when I was out of the wash. Ran out of water (I started with a tad more than a gallon) with about a mile and a half to go.

Only saw 10 people all day. No flowers, but it's still incredibly green. Really cool to look back at the peaks and visible sections of trail that I had been on earlier in the day. Excellent hike!

1st trip
I got a late start today. I was hiking with my son, home from ASU for the day, and we have 2 different ideas on early. So now it's 11am, we are driving down Olive to the gate to pay our $6, and there is a backup getting through the gate where you pay. There was 40 cars in front of me and it took 20 minutes to pay. I'd driven an hour to get there so I wasn't turning around. I waited and hoped they wouldn't be where we were going to be. Once to the Goat Camp trail head, it was fine. I'm thinking there was some sort of a get together farther in the park.

This was my son's first trip to the White Tanks, and my first time up the Goat Camp trail and to the Radio Summit. I'd seen the towers up there on my other trips, and just had to go up there. The first couple of miles up the Goat were pretty easy and boring. The rest of the trip I really enjoyed. The scramble off the Goat Camp trail up to the Radio Towers was a bit strenuous, but not that bad. Part way up we came across the Blue Dots on rocks and followed them to the top. It was 2:10 minutes for us to get to the top from the Trailhead. Once at the top....boy was it windy and much colder and 2665 feet higher. We walked around up there checking out the towers and structures. If anyone from Yuma, that has Cablevision, lost their picture today.... It was not me. There was even a building up there, that no longer had a roof, and had a "For Sale by Owner" sign on it. If anyone is interested, PM me and I'll forward the phone number and pictures. It's a fixer-upper.

We headed off to the southwest side to get out of the wind and enjoy some lunch. While eating we watched a pair of hawks soaring around looking for their own lunch...below us! The views were spectacular up top. We walked around up there for awhile longer before heading down. and took one little side trip that I'd recommend. It's an unofficial trail, but it is easy to follow. Within 20' of the two mile marker, there is a trail the bears off to the South. It travels .1 mile and 232' up to a great rocky outcrop that provides some great views and Photo Ops.

Note: I saw no Goats at all today
