Wasn't quite sure where to post this 1. This heading sounds correct but the formation of the route & stats r clearly off. The other hiker I went with found it on an inferior but more popular website. I'm sure no-one can figure out what that is 😃

We hiked goat camp till the jct (6.4 miles I believe). We then did the Mesquite loop. Then back the way we came on goat camp. Miles 2 & 3 were the most challenging.

As part of my recent hikes to trails I've done before, but haven't done in 15+ years and never logged in on HAZ, I've been wanting to made a return to the White Tanks. I-10 construction, hot weather, and general laziness have gotten in the way of that recently. With the recent turn to cooler weather and a holiday weekend with no freeway closures, I had no excuses left to not go. I decided on the southern loop of the Goat Camp and Mesquite Trails, but added Willow Canyon.

A slow start out the door got me a post 7am start on the trail. It was still pretty cold, so I started with the hoodie up and the gloves on. Those were both shed about a mile or so in once the climb started. I decided to start straight away up the Goat Camp Trail to get the hard part out of the way first. I had also noticed on the county map that a significant section of the Goat Camp Trail is marked as a rough section to hike with loose rocks. The older I get, it becomes harder to walk down that kind of trail than up it. Plus, coming down, at that point I would have been past the 11 mile mark and very tired.

The shade in the canyons on the way up Goat Camp kept me kind of cool and not sweating too much. Saw 5 hikers on the way up, 3 seemed to only go up part way and then headed back. Once I got over the saddle, the views opened up to the north, where the snowline from the night before was very well defined. It was also at that point that I noticed a herd of deer in the canyon below me. I spent some extra time zooming in on them getting some decent shots.

The level part of the Goat Camp Trail seemed to be the nicest part of the hike. the snow to the north make for great scenery, and the trail was level, making the hiking very easy and pleasant. I barely noticed the decent that the trail begins to make to the junction with the Mesquite and Ford Canyon Trails until I looked back at one point and noticed how much higher it was where I had just hiked from.

Willow Canyon and the lower Mesquite Trails had the most traffic, as expected. Mostly standing water was in pools in the washes, but in some spots you could hear the gurgling of a slow flow of water.

I decided to make it a loop, hiking the lower trails back to where I parked. it ended up being a little longer than I expected, but not unbearable. A mild slog a times, mainly being caused by the length of the hike, but nothing horrible.

Pleasant weather the entire hike, cool temps and sunny and clear weather.

This hike is in the 60 hikes book. One of the hiking books I will work on this year. I parked at the Bathroom where Bajada Trail crosses the road. I did the hike clockwise. I started about 10 til 7AM. It was cold and windy but I never got rained on. There was a hiker at one of the Goat Camp saddles with one of those weather gadgets my friend Bruce has. He said wind was at 22 mph and the temp was 34. It did feel a little nippy from time to time. The Sun did come out. The trails were wet but in good shape. The hikers and trail runners were all friendly today as were the dogs. Nice hike. :) The "official route" on HAZ jumps off Mesquite Trail by the intersection with Waddell Trail and followed the road for a short while. I believe you should stay on Mesquite Trail and I did on my loop. :y:

Got on the trail a little after 8am a little bit later than anticipated. Worked out nice in one way in that the temperatures were very nice...no jacket required. Started from the Goat Camp TH, but decided to do this loop counterclockwise. The Goat Camp Trail between mile marker 1 and 3 is a brutal climb between the elevation gain and the rockiness of it, especially if one is trying to jog... but to be honest, its not much better coming down it. Anyway took the beginning of Goat Camp to Bajada to Mule Deer to Mesquite to Willow to Ford to Goat Camp and then Goat Camp back to the car. Didn't see anyone on the lower sections but started to encounter people as I climbed the Mesquite. Trails were nice to run on until I got to the back of the Willow. The incline wasn't too bad but the loose rocks made for a challenging ascent. The Ford portion of this loop continued that theme. I was happy with my run, though I was hoping for a better time. The knee was a sore with the descent on Goat Camp but I was able to finish the run.

The air was cool from Friday nights rain and it was a windy morning. Had a activity at ramada 4 at 9 am so it gave me the opportunity to do this loop that I enjoy. Left the Goat Camp trail head at 6:30. Pushed it hard up Goat Camp and made my best time ever to mile 3 then took my time with slow run for the rest of the time. Enjoyed the slow run. Love running those top trails. Stopped and talked to some runner from Suprise as I was going down Willow.

Started on a dark, cool, clear morning in the Valley. The guy at the park entrance said I was his first customer on the day.

It'd been awhile since I'd been out to the White Tanks, and it sure felt good to not have to drive at least a couple of hours to get out of the heat to hike.

Ford Canyon is one of my favorites in the park, so I started my big loop there. I enjoy both Willow and Mesquite, so I did some off trail to the top of Willow Spring and then included the upper portions of Willow then Mesquite. Now on Goat Camp on my way to Barry Goldwater Peak, I kept my eyes open for any signs. None. I followed a wash to the road that goes to Barry Goldwater peak. I sat and enjoyed the views while I ate my lunch. I actually got a bit cold up there.

My least favorite part of this hike was the steep, rough, uneven downhill portion of Goat Camp Trail. I'd forgotten how bad that portion of the track is.

My goals were simple for the day:
1) Get to a spot where I could see Willow Spring from above - Check
2) Get to the top of Barry Goldwater Peak - Check
3) Hike the part Of the Goat Camp Trail that I hadn't done before - Check
4) Put together a loop in for some good exercise - Check
5) See a Goat on Goat Camp Trail - Nope....

Today as part of the 60 Hikes within 60 miles I decided to do the Goat Camp to Willow Canyon and out on Mesquite Canyon Trail. I went by myself and as I was checking out the added distance to walk down the road to the GC Trail Head where my car would be parked I met some folks that allowed me to park at the finish line and they gave me a ride down to the Goats Camp Trailhead. Perfect! Anyway the hike started out a little late (1:47PM) which was a little hot but who am I to complain? Everything else was perfect. I made my way on up Goat Camp and over to Willow Canyon and then out on Mesquite. A very nice hike overall! No complaints. 3 to go to hit all 60! Woo Hoo! Saving Browns Peak for the last one simply based on its elevation.

In 1992 I don't think White Tanks had all the trails/alignments it does now. Anyway to reach the high point 4083 (it wasn't yet named BGP) we took Waterfall trail then a route up the first wash to intersect the ridge line, an old trail that then intersected with Mesquite (old alignment I think) after this a section of Goat Camp and finally the last push up BGP although back then I think it was an old track and then roads. On the way back I do remember we took Mesquite all the way down.
