We needed to get to higher ground to get out of the heat, and Woods Canyon Lake is one of Deb's favorites in the state. So, we decided to go.

It was 78 degrees with a breezy to windy start, so we decided against the kayaks. A loop around the lake it was. We had the trail all to ourselves for the entire loop. There were some people fishing on the shore and in boats, but that was it. The weather was glorious.

After lunch at one of the rim vistas with views of the Billy fire in the Anchas, we headed down the paved FR300 to Bear Canyon Lake. You only have the three miles from FR300 to the lake remaining that is now dirt.

We just sampled the trail from the Merganser Trailhead to the lake. Deb had never been to Bear Canyon Lake. There was no one on the lake, and we only saw a single person fishing. The temperatures were still very comfortable in the low 80s.

Joined Kyle, 9L, Chums and Bruce for a loop around the rim from Two-Sixty Trailhead. It's been a few years since doing this but it's a pleasant hike. Starting on Highline then over to Drew Trail where the climb begins. Highline is now a sidewalk with all the work done over past few years but Drew wasn't bad either. Reaching the rim we all took a break and regrouped.

After the break we headed for Woods Canyon Lake on a side drainage that eventually dumped us into one of the lake arms. Along the way we passed some decent patches of snow still left over from the last good snow storm. Eventually we followed lake arm around the northside of the lake.

Took a lunch break on the northside in the rocks overlooking the lake. Ran into a few people along the way now that all the road access is open. After lunch we hiked to the spillway and the usual crowd was there but we were back to solitude along the creek below the spillway.

Followed the creek to Chumleys exit point about 1.5 miles downstream. Then hiked cross country back to the rim and the Military Sink Hole Trail. Followed that trail back to the trailhead. Great to hike with this group again!!

This is a springtime favorite for when the fireball starts to make the lower elevations hikes less enjoyable. A couple of late-season storms provided a some snowpack with lingering drifts, but the overall moisture content up here is well below average, with little or no spring runoff happening in the typical spots. The February 28 start of fire restrictions was a bit premature in my opinion, but with wind and warmer temps coming over the next 2-3 months, there could be dangerous conditions up here if a couple of spring storms don't bring relief.

Highline to Drew always ends up lasting just a little bit longer than I'd prefer, but Drew goes by quickly. No skitters on the rim this year, which was a welcome change. Grasses seem to be filling in the unsightly masticated forest floor left behind from the aggressive thinning that has been going on over the past few years. That's a welcome thing too.

The lack of snow has resulted in roads that were open for all but a couple of weeks, and the lake was bustling with crowds of people escaping the triple digits in the valley. Not much activity on the north shore though, so that was nice. At the dam, Bruceboots opted for the longer carbon-dioxide, boombox, tourist-strewn route, while the rest of us opted for scenery and peace.

Back at the sinkhole we made our way back to the trailhead, enjoying the unnecessary 2 extra miles that this trail decides to make for no apparent reason.

Nice temps all day, a lot more cloudiness than expected, and the kind of breeze that keeps the noseeumgnats away. In spite of the company, all-in-all, an enjoyable day.

After some Kayaking and some lunch we carefully scanned the darkening skies and decided to give the lake loop a try. Most of the weather was to the north and west of us. This is a short but pretty hike.

Going CW, the south and west portions of this trail are my favorites.

With a mile to go, we started getting a light rain, which got a bit harder. We still had a good time.

We had heavy rain and hail for quite awhile on the way home. Should have been enough to put out the West Fire.

Bruce has been pestering me for years to invite him snowshoeing but with his busy work schedule it just hasn't ever worked out. So when he recommended we take advantage of the recent stealth snowfall on Monday, I called in and postponed my scheduled annual review at work. I wasn't sure if we'd have to hike up Sinkhole from the 260 TH or if we could find safe parking higher up. There had been no plowing off highway, but only about a foot of new snow overnight made it easy for us to make first tracks through the parking lot.

The only other time I put foot to snow in this area was a brutal day of misery four years ago where three of us alternated breaking trail through a couple of feet of newly fallen snow. We all nearly died and stuck to the boring Crook trail on an out n back.

Today the goal was to check out the canyon bottom, and despite not knowing what kind of flow we would find, opted to check it off first with the lake as the midpoint on the loop. Getting started it was apparent that all the flat land at the top of the rim is saturated and loaded with water. Heading downhill all that water consolidated into easily avoidable streams. The depth of snow is impressive and surprising. 30"-36" was the minimum, with sheltered draws and drifts approaching double that. For the first time on snowshoes in Arizona, I found myself cautiously avoiding tree wells and a couple of times fell into cavities around fallen logs or boulders that were not that easy to self-extricate. Thankfully, Bruce was always nearby to lend a helping hand. :app:

The deep snow made breaking trail slow. After covering the first two miles in a little over an hour, creekside travel slowed to about 1mph, taking over 3.5 hours to go the next 3 miles. Cause or effect? -- A LOT of photos were taken (sorry, I posted all of them! ) The place was sort of magical, and for most people, very un-Arizona.

As we approached the lake, the roar of the spillway could be heard and we were treated to the views of what we decided should be named Eagle Falls. Though the eagle closure doesn't begin for another week, we avoided the nesting area and opted against the full lake loop. Unfortunately no raptor sighting today as was the case along the snowbabe a couple of weeks ago.

Next was the quick traverse (lol, not!) over to the store and boat ramp for a break to rest weary legs before starting the long return trip. By depleted energy levels, a rational person would have turned around at least a mile before reaching the lake, but Bruce pushed on and my hope was that the second half of the loop would be easier. While it would not involve the normal relief of returning in the already broken trail we got there on, I thought perhaps there would be a packed trail courtesy of snowmobiles. Additionally, I figured that pavement in March would have accelerated snowmelt and maybe the route back would be clear by late afternoon.

LOL. No luck on the snow machines. Virgin snow everywhere. The pavement had been clear at some point in the past couple of weeks. But there was still mostly a foot of snow with larger drifts from the past two weeks of snowfall. And suddenly the clearing skies were quickly obscured by rapidly approaching dark clouds, snowfall, and thunder. Yay. The road walk is not exciting, but snow depth made it quicker, and more importantly, less effort. At some point poles were regularly clicking pavement and it seemed a fine idea to go without flotation. Ten minutes later, it was deeper again and trudging in boots was more exhausting than floating. Another change of footwear as the snow squall pelted us and thunder boomed.

Two hours to go the last three road miles back to the truck. That part wasn't exciting, but still some nice views of a place that isn't often seen like this. Snow and wind dropped temps into the 20s for the first time on the day. Back at the truck, tracks showed another vehicle had done a loop in the parking lot sometime during the day. It had been the FS, who shoveled out access to the bathrooms. Bruce offered to buy dinner so we headed down the hill for a celebratory meal.

With more snow forecast this weekend, I might just have to go again before this season comes to a close. Not sure if Bruce is ready for it, but Joe has been talking about wanting to snowshoe too. It should be great! :)

It had been 4 years since I hiked on the Rim Lake Vista Trail, so I decided to head up there today.

We started at the 260 TH, and we did a CW lasso loop hike. We took the Military Sinkhole Trail up to the Rim, and then went left on the Rim Lake Vista Trail. We stopped at a few of the scenic vistas on the trail, and then made our way off-trail to the Woods Canyon Lake Trail. Once there, we went around the north side of Woods Canyon Lake, and stopped at a nice spot for lunch.

We continued going around Woods Canyon Lake, and then dropped down into Woods Canyon. Woods Canyon was very nice -- it was very green and there was some water in places, but not enough to get our feet wet. We continued through the canyon and then made our way back to the Military Sinkhole Trail.

This was a very nice hike -- the weather was super, there are some nice views along the Rim Lake Vista Trail, and there were hardly any other people on the north side of Woods Canyon Lake. This was my first time in Woods Canyon, and I enjoyed that part of the hike. I imagine that I will repeat this hike again sometime.

We started from Two Sixty Trailhead around 8AM, and there were quite a few mountain bikers setting up to ride, though not many on the trails early on. Temps were in the mid-60s when we got going, and we hiked the loop clockwise. The first 4+ miles were smooth sailing on Highline, and the trees were buzzing with cicadas. Mountain bike traffic picked up as we approached the Drew Trail intersection. We turned there and started the climb toward the rim, and just about all the elevation gain on the route is concentrated on the first mile along Drew up to the rim.

Everything up to that point was pleasant pine forest, but the beauty of the landscape dropped off quickly around the campgrounds on top...lots of cut/downed trees, not much shade, and huge piles of dead branches and pine needles. We took a short food break just after crossing FR 300, and the scenery improved again as we started following the creek toward Woods Canyon Lake, with a lot more tree cover and greenery.

The lake was beautiful but crowded, as expected, with lots of boats and people fishing from the shore. We saw a water snake early on as we made our way around the north shore of the lake toward the dam on the east side, staying close to the shore to avoid the bald eagle closure (didn't see any). The area around the boat ramp to the south was packed...I was happy we weren't over there.

From the dam, we left the trail again and followed the creek for ~2.5 miles. There were game trails in many places, and even when it was more overgrown, it was easy off-trail hiking, and the creek was dry enough that avoiding the water wasn't an issue despite criss-crossing many times. That section of the hike reminded me a lot of the [ East Clear Creek - Dry Lake Loop ] we hiked a few years ago. Once we left the creek bed and got up into the forest again, we sat down for a lunch break and watched an elk pass in the meadow.

The terrain took another underwhelming turn as we connected with Military Sinkhole Trail, with more cleared trees and charred stumps. If we passed the sinkhole, it didn't stand out as anything remarkable...we didn't notice any of the sinkholes along the route today. Once we dropped down off the rim, we were back in pleasant, shady forest the rest of the way to Two Sixty, and the descent seemed more gradual than the hike up Drew earlier in the day. Only one car remaining at the trailhead when we finished up in the late afternoon.

Overall, this was a fairly typical Payson area/rim hike--consistently pleasant and often shady, and this one had an interesting mix of solitude and crowds while alternating between thick forest and barren, burned areas before/after Woods Canyon Lake. The route we followed was virtually identical to one The_Eagle, trekkin_gecko, LindaAnn, and rayhuston hiked earlier this month, but our Route Scouts recorded the mileage at closer to 17, compared to ~15.5 for theirs...not sure if ours were generous with the mileage or if theirs were stingy :).

Got started around 0800 from the 260 trailhead. West on Highline. Easy hiking, nice shade from the trees.

Quick snack break before heading up Drew. I like Drew trail, generally good footing, and only a few steep portions. We each took Drew at our own pace, regrouping at the top.

Meandered east at the top, heading for a drainage that would take us to the nw corner of Woods Canyon Lake. Easy, and pretty, hiking along here. Bruce swears there was snow here just two weeks ago, but it’s gone now.

At the lake, we followed the trail east around the north side. Stopped for lunch on some large rocks while we watched the fishermen below. After that, we skirted around the eagle nesting closure, while getting pics of one eagle in a tree.

At the dam, we headed down Woods Canyon. Some water to negotiate, and some deadfall to dodge, but feet stayed dry and the canyon was quite fun.

Quick hike up out of the canyon and over towards Military Sinkhole trail, which had the least memorable sinkhole of the hike—the two we had passed earlier were more picture-worthy.

Down Military Sinkhole trail. The upper part followed an old roadbed and was easy hiking, although a little drab on the scenery. The lower half was much prettier, being in the shade and trees.

Great loop, nice weather, great company and conversation, and I was able to make it home just in time to shower and get my daughter to judo practice, so the timing was perfect.

Got Linda, Kelly and Ray together for an old favorite up in rim country.

60's to start and perfect weather all day. We did the loop clockwise to get the 4+ miles on the Highline done first. A snack at the intersection with Drew before making the 1100' climb to the rim.

The off trail portion getting over to Woods Canyon Lake is easy peazy. There has been quite a bit of thinning south of the rim road.

We made our way around the lake and took the reroute to bypass the eagle nesting area.

Heading down the Woods Canyon drainage was typical travel as in past years. What deadfall there is, is easily bypassed. Out of the canyon and up to the sinkhole, we made our way over to the Military Sinkhole trail.

Dropping off the rim, you go through old growth that almost blocks the sun in places.

Great hiking with the gang again. You couldn't ask for nicer weather.

What a great day to hike the Rim Country. A nearly cloudless sky with temps in the 60's. A wonderful route with excellent company made it just about perfect.

A four plus mile stroll under a canopy of green to start the hike. Gorgeous. Then came Drew and a short break. Joyful banter up to this point gave way to heavy breathing for the next mile. Everyone at their own pace. It was quick, though, and soon enough we were back on relatively flat ground enjoying the splendor of this fabulous area as we headed cross country to Woods Canyon Lake.

The Woods Canyon Lake trail is a delight. We stopped for lunch with a lakefront view and watched kayakers and anglers give it their best. After lunch, a detour around nesting eagles then on to the dam. Once at the dam, we dropped into the drainage and continued along Woods Canyon for another two miles before climbing out.

I enjoyed Woods Canyon, but that last mile as the canyon narrowed was starting to wear on me. I was hoping for a deviation in the route, but climbing out before the prescribed exit would have been steep and much more difficult. I zipped it and continued on. Once out of Woods Canyon we stopped for a break before heading cross country to the Sinkhole trail. The break ended with a smiley-faced Bruce tossing pine cones at me. Guess it's time to go.

We made our way to the sinkhole trail, took a glance at the sinkhole as we passed (without slowing down) and continued on back to the Rim. We took a momentary pause to enjoy the views from the Rim before heading down to the trailhead. As we descended, more than one of us wondered aloud why we kept going up when we're supposed to be going down. By now Kelly was leading the pack, so it didn't matter if we were going up or down; we were going fast!

This is a great loop, my second time through it, both with Bruce along guiding the way. It was a most enjoyable day. Bruce, Kelly and Linda, it is always great hiking with you. Thanks for a wonderful day!

Revisited this loop from a couple years ago for the annual rim lakes hike before 300 opens. There was still a lot of snow all over the rim, and I'd guess it'll be a couple weekends before it's open. I do think it's open as far as to get to Woods Lake. Two Sixty start with Highline to See Canyon.

The water in Christopher Creek is running off strong. To cross near the TH someone cut down a tree spanning the creek. Heading up See Canyon the only wet crossing was at the See Spring drainage, but it wasn't bad. See Canyon Trail is in the most deteriorated condition I've seen it in five years of going. There is significant deadfall, and the trail is eroded in spots. There was tons of water except in the middle. Still good snow higher up around and above the big waterfall.

Took Bear Canyon down. Deep, hard snow mostly the whole way, but I wasn't really sinking in or sliding on top. Great flow of water. Saw a dozen turkeys on top by 300 and a coyote at the edge of the lake. Hung out around there before climbing out of the SE drainage. I didn't head up very far and instead climbed up where there was no snow. Got on the roads and walked back to 300. There's still big snow drifts on 84 and presumably the road to Bear Canyon Lake.

Carr to Carr Lake, broke in the company of the many harmonizing frogs. Straight from the lake down the easy terrain to Aspen, then to Boulder Hop. The west side of Boulder Hop is a road turned creek bed then a disappearing line in the grass. Pretty easy to navigate the Hole in Ground area without it. Gen Crook through the hole then I climbed back up to 300 to avoid the big pool that feeds upper Woods Canyon.

Trickling and a little snow in the upper canyon, great flow below the dam. The lake is at something like 101%. All the feeder drainages are pouring in. Pretty much had the place to myself, apart from some distant silhouettes. The spillway is running off like a waterfall, so I headed down. Didn't get far in Woods Canyon before bailing due to snow on the slopes I wanted to climb out on farther down. Cut corners back to Meadow then Vista before Sinkhole. Saw a couple cars on Meadow and two men on RV.

This loop hike with my son-in-law and grandson started at our campsite in the Aspen CG, proceeding to the Woods Canyon Lake Spillway, then down Woods Canyon for 2 miles before exiting the canyon and heading southwest to the Rim Vista Trail. We then followed the vista trail 0.7 miles to the Rim Lakes Vista Site before heading more-or-less north back to our campsite. The best part of this loop were the scenic views along the 2 miles following the creek. We chose to exit the canyon following a gps track recorded by HAZ intrepid explorers @The_Eagle and @joebartels on 8/19/2019. Their track led us to a massive and impassable, in my opinion, deadfall. A problem not uncommon when following one of their tracks. Our young pathfinder was not deterred and led us up an alternate path to the canyon rim. Back at camp Michael mentioned that the climb out of the canyon was his favorite part of the hike. (Thanks, Bruce and Joe)

Last year in April I looped Bear Canyon and Woods Canyon Lakes the day 300 opened, so I tried again this year a little earlier in the month and got to enjoy the having the Rim to myself until Willow Springs Lake. I tried this idea out in the summer last year but found the foliage along the creek, humidity and related slipperiness, and the many many mosquitoes too much to manage. This time of year conditions are pretty much perfect.

Sparing the well-reported, Woods Canyon was my favorite of the two. It starts grassy, flat, and open, and stays that way for a long while. Big pools of water, the water slow moving and glassy. Really dense forest of tall and diverse trees. The middle six or seven miles in the canyons between the lakes isn't so grassy and nice; that stretch is a long rock hop.

The rock hopping is harder in Willow Springs Canyon where deadfall is thrown into the mix. WSC cuts through a similar forest. The water moves a little quicker and doesn't pool as wide. WSC gets easier more suddenly than Woods. All the sudden it's off the rocks and onto a grassy trail. In the lower few miles passed a few sites with old irrigation tubing.

Climbed up to Willow Springs Lake around the dam and headed over to the Bike Loop. A trail winds around south of the lake often times right next to the 260. although the footbridges it crosses were on my map, the trail itself was not. Stopped a couple times at the lake to admire the peaceful scenery. The rest of the trip along the rimtop to Rim Vista was spent among some huge ponderosas.

Rim Vista at about sunset is the way to go. Saw the only people outside of Willow Springs Lake on Sinkhole. Heading in for a backpack. Saw lots of birds, some deer, an elk, and a small snake on the day. Repeating would probably start on top of the rim or shuttle.

I'd been looking to get up on the rim before the roads open and the hordes arrive to burn the place down. I put together a loop from the 260th with a handful of options once up on the plateau. We found an orphaned hiker thumbing it in Payson and decided he looked safe enough to give a ride to. Turns out he's a regular hiker here on the hazzerwebs. Good to put a few steps on the ground with the soaring Eagle again :) .

We knocked off the Highline traverse in the cool morning air before climbing up Drew to the rim. It was delightfully quiet and peaceful. We headed down canyon toward the lake, encountering plenty of flowing water and some nice remnant snow in the shaded areas. We opted for the long way around the lake before heading down below the dam, which had a light flow of water running over it.

After heading down canyon a ways we climbed out and cut across toward the Sinkhole. This stretch has been thinned and even though it's been at least 5 years, it's still a rather unpleasant barren wasteland of stumps and leftover logging debris.

My first time taking the sinkhole down the hill, the top is nice but ends up traversing about a mile farther than seemed necessary. Possibly wouldn't have been a big deal had it not been so late into a big hike.

All in all, a great day and a wonderful loop to do in off-season when this otherwise busy area is more peaceful.

Since July, 2021, when I attempted a through hike of Willow Springs Canyon and Woods Canyon [ photoset ] , I’ve wondered if there were better routes into, or out of, either canyon. 🤔

That curiousity was the motivation for my Willow Springs Canyon rim exploration [ photoset ] two months ago, and for why I returned to Woods Canyon today. A map recon revealed a side wash that might ease access to the bottom of the middle of Woods Canyon.

My plan was to hike from the Spillway Campground, across the Woods Canyon Dam, head northeast cross-country for ¾ of a mile to decommissioned FR 195M, follow the old road bed east for 1¼ miles to FR 195D, drop into the side wash, follow that down a ½ mile to Woods Canyon, then head down Woods Canyon ¾ of a mile to about where I lost my gear. 🧭

No sense repeating what is in the photoset: [ photo ] .

After giving up on searching for my lost gear, I headed back up Woods Canyon. Rather than re-negotiate the tangled side wash, I decided instead to climb out on its left bluff. It was a steep 150 ft., but took much less time than the wash. Starting at 8:30 a.m., I met my wife back at the Spillway Campground just before 1:00 p.m. Then it was off to the bait shop for my favorite part of hiking Woods Canyon Lake: beer and, especially, Good Humor Ice Cream! 🍦🤗

Originally planned on looping Woods Lake and Willow Springs Lake through the canyons. Started at Two Sixty TH, and because of the water and mosquitoes contented myself with just most of Woods Canyon. Went clockwise around 5:30am.

Highline's best portion passed by a half dozen or more mountain bikers. Nice warm up to get going. Saw them again at their break spot, the Drew junction. Headed up somehow first time, easy climb that sorts out the rim elevation quickly without ever feeling steep.

First stop Hole-In-Ground. Had a break and ate breakfast at the bottom of the southern meadow. Up Gen Crook to Woods Canyon and down to the lake. More overgrown than in April but far from a bushwhack. Around the lake to the north with a mouthy osprey for company. Passed a family on the lake trail as I descended below the dam.

Woods Canyon east of the lake was a little more difficult but never too choked up. Moderate trickle in the spillway, good water all the way down. Some boulders to climb over to stay dry and avoid the corn lilly and brush. Overall not too bad. Turned a corner checking the GPS, and my hands were covered in mosquitoes. Between that and the views up canyon where it slims, decided to climb the ridge up the rim toward road/trail 235. It's a nice walk through the open pine from where I joined it albeit swarming with mosquitoes.

Rim Vista lots of folks. Many cars parked at that first th off the 260. A crew was working the trail on the east side before it turns to cement. Felt busy until Sinkhole and from then on just me and the woods. Ever easy descent back to the trailhead.

Started from the Rim Top TH. Plan was to hike out on the Bike Trail about 1.5 miles, then cross over and drop down into Woods Canyon, hike the upper part of Woods and the entire Willow Springs canyons, completing the loop via a faint FR back to the TH. I had several alternate drop down points and bail out points identified as backup, but none were needed.

We both really enjoyed this canyon loop hike. On a difficulty scale I'd give it 3.5, maybe 4 if unprepared and inexperienced in canyon hiking. The drop down point was the big question but I got lucky with my guesstimate. A little steep at the top but a quarter of the way down I saw a nice looking game trail that we jumped on and zigged our way to the bottom. Woods Canyon is easy canyon hiking with no water, a wide floor, and very large, stable rocks to hop across. We saw 4 very large elk gracefully cross in front of us all sporting large antler racks. We were moving so good that we missed the Willow Springs Canyon junction and had to backtrack a bit but no worries.

Hello Willow Springs Canyon. A lot different than Woods. Flowing water, a lot of deadfall, slick rocks, thick banks, and very narrow stretches along the way. It alone is a solid 4 on the difficulty scale. We just took our time, and enjoyed the fantastic scenery and wildlife (saw another group of 3 elk cross the canyon). Once we hit the use trail it was smooth sailing back to the TH. Temps in the canyon were ideal on this day.

It's a fun challenge in April timing a rim lakes hike between the melting of the snow and the opening of FR300. Went as work permitted, and ended up going on the day 300 opened. Had The Rim to myself for most of the day. Wanted to loop Bear Canyon Lake and Woods Canyon Lake together and came up with this. Started at the Two Sixty TH around 8am and went clockwise.

Would have started at See Canyon, but I always save Highline for the end and wanted to give it a fair shake for it's best and most piney stretch. Mountain bike highway between the trailheads that winds between a brilliant forest of pine, fir, maple, and others.

See Canyon Trail had a little deadfall but wasn't as bad as last year. Water from Nappa Spring down and in the upper ~mile. some snow left in the canyon higher up but none on the trail. Decided to skip See Spring since it's familiar and there was so much else to see.

Topped out at FR300 and worked my way down Bear Canyon. Still a good amount of snow but nothing bad. Good flow of water. Just love it in that canyon, dense forest of huge conifers with interspersed meadows. Always a fun feeling seeing the lake at the bottom where the canyon opens up. Lake is full as I've seen it. Had it to myself and was going to walk round but decided to savor the south shore solitude instead. Left via the southeast drainage, which had less snow but a strong flow of water. Didn't hang around the bottom and worked up to the road SE and then up to FR84. Nobody on the road as I walked it.

Got down to Carr Loop which is not so much a trail but a road. Nice walk through the pines. Stopped at Carr Lake which was a nice stop, though won't draw crowds. Aspen Trail is similar but better somehow. Denser forest, the road is older or less maintained, so it feels less like walking on 300. Quite liked Aspen Trail but wasn't on it long before cutting over on Boulder Hop Trail to Gen Crook and the Hole-in-Ground area. Really beautiful area and probably my favorite part of the day. Beautiful weather for a break in the meadow and then off to Woods Canyon.

Woods Canyon is wider and easier than getting down Bear Canyon. Less snow, and there's a use trail the whole way down. Really scenic stretch of canyon from the road to the west of the lake. Planning on coming back and exploring east of the lake where there's a lot more to see. The trail around Woods Canyon Lake is in great shape with chevrons every so often. Really nice walk a couple hours before sunset. People were filing into the lake area, and I realized the road was opened. Rest of the trip was busy with car traffic.

Was going to continue through Woods past the dam and head to Sinkhole that way, but my feet were killing me. It's no shorter to use Meadow and Rim Vista, but those are less trails and more sidewalks, and I figured my feet would thank me. It's a really pretty section of open pine forest, but it was busy with car traffic.

Sinkhole was a nice way to end. Made for bikers, the tread is smooth and it's all downhill. It descends through the shade of pine trees. Got back down to the trailhead only having seen people in cars on the rimtop.

I was craving a long hike on the rim with varying scenery and this one I found in the rim vista alt routes fit the bill! I parked off FR 195 at an open campsite close to the sign that read “trail” then followed that down a ways. Quickly I saw a flock of wild turkeys (I think?), so that was cool! You make your way down to woods canyon lake and it brings you around the less populated side of the lake. Only saw one guy swimming and a few people kayaking, but it was nice and quiet and I was loving it! This route only follows the lake for a bit before it heads off trail into a canyon area. This part of the route was more of a choose your own path type thing, since there wasn’t much of a trail for the majority of it. There were a lot of burned plants, so I’m not sure what happened there. There were some spots with water, but mostly was dry creek bed. Things were getting a bit thick, and then I heard of lot of rustling noises; also, it kinda felt eerie since there was nobody around so I took a quick snack break and tried to survey the best path. Shortly after I continued on, I came across a large pile of FRESH bear poop. :scared: Next up, I saw a large paw print in the mud. I quickly realized I had to get out of that canyon area ASAP. As much as I’d love to see a bear, I’d rather not be solo hiking for my first time. Anyway, I quickly exited the canyon and got into a more flat wooded area. There was still no trail, but it was heading towards one, so I was all good. This path linked up with the military sinkhole trail and goes by some pretty rim vista viewpoint spots. The path became paved for a bit and I was not a fan. I moved very quickly on this section just to get it over with. There was an intersection that was following what looked like an old road, so I headed that way (ultimately choosing same as the route I was following instead of staying on the paved path). The path quickly faded and it was just random walking on overgrown grassy areas. I did get to see a couple of aspens that were just starting to turn yellow! Any signs of Fall are always promising! Anyways, the random path dumped me out on rim road, which I crossed then followed a different trail a little ways before finally making it back to the forest road I had parked on. I was suuuuper happy to see Lexi the off road sedan! On the way back, I saw a completely torched RV with caution/crime scene tape. Really happy that got contained and didn’t start a larger fire. Overall, great day on the rim!
