Took Keith up to Rogers Rock. Nice flowing creeks and lush pristine forest… beautiful as always. Hung out for a spell near Madera Spring before checking out Roger’s. Came back on Super which was long and a bit warm for my liking.

I wanted to try something new in the Santa Ritas, and decided to go for McCleary. I downloaded the McCleary Peak Loop route, but didn't make it to the trailhead until 9:30 so I wasn't sure if I'd make the whole thing or not.

My favorite stretch of trail in the range so far is the unmarked stretch between the Pipeline/Kent Spring junction and Madera Spring, so I tweaked my route to follow that trail and swing by Roger's Rock. As soon as I came upon that trail I couldn't stop smiling as the forest was in full leaf and the creek was flowing. It was just as well no one was on the trail as I was grinning like an idiot.

I stopped to filter water at Madera Spring to make sure I had enough for the higher elevations. I was serenaded by songbirds and beheld golden columbines blooming along the water. The last time I was here, everything was covered in snow and ice, and I greatly enjoy the different kind of magic that each season brings to this place.

It took some effort to leave the area around the spring and press on to Roger's Rock. I paused there a few minutes to enjoy the view, then took off up the strange trail following the ridgeline to Four Springs. I say strange because it's clearly not an official trail, yet it does seem like someone built it for a purpose, and it seems to get regular maintenance.

Four Springs to Shovel Saddle was clear and easy. I stopped for lunch at Shovel Saddle, one of my favorite hangouts. I've had lots of lunches there. It was a late lunch, though; it was already 1pm. I spent so much time ogling at nature the whole way up, it looked like I wouldn't have time to do any loops at all and would barely have time to do McCleary.

Four Springs above Shovel Saddle is one of those official trails in far worse condition than the segment between Roger's Rock and Four Springs. It is seriously overgrown with oaks and less friendly plants, to the point that the oaks on both sides of the trail are almost touching in the middle. When it passes through a section of standing old growth forest, the steep slope has deposited enough loose rocks and pinecones on the trail to make passage a little more treacherous than I'd like. Conditions aside, I was able to make good time, about twenty minutes from Shovel Saddle to the McCleary turnoff.

Once I reached the turn for McCleary, I really got a taste for bushwhacking! It's clear that at one time there was a trail to McCleary, but the overgrowth almost renders it moot. It was surprisingly easy to follow, though I had to check the route a few times, and I did leave it once. Nevertheless, between the bushwhacking and rock scrambling, going was really slow. It took about half an hour to get to the peak.

The views at McCleary are fabulous. I signed the register and looked around for a survey pin but couldn't find it (I've been known to lose my glasses on my face, so my inability to find the pin means nothing as to its actual presence).

I left the peak around 2:30pm. I definitely did not have time for the whole loop, so 88Mac and any other peaks are for another day. I returned to the car the same way I came up. It only took me 2 hours to get back, including a 15-minute break at my happy spot (Madera Spring). I definitely went faster downhill with less ogling.

Overall a very successful and lovely day.

Columbines around Madera Spring. Lots of hedgehog cactus blooms especially around McCleary. Coral Bells on Four Springs. Gooding's verbena on the ridge above Roger’s Rock. A few others here and there.

Hadn't been feeling well all week; finally got out but it was a late start. Headed to the Santa Ritas to see what things were like at Shovel Saddle. The drive out was super windy, but the winds were coming from ENE so I hoped Madera Canyon would be sheltered.

Sure enough there was little to no wind at the parking lot, which had patchy snow. Proceeded up Super to Pipeline. Not far up Pipeline the trail was covered in several inches of powder, and no tracks except mine and lots of wildlife. Pretty sure the tracks were deer, rabbits, possibly a fox or bobcat, and definitely a healthy mountain lion. Paw prints the size of my foot!

The entire way to Roger's Rock was a winter wonderland with lots of water in the creeks, crystal clear. Roger's Rock was festooned with icicles.

The ridge up to Four Springs was dicey and steep in the snow. It was very slow going.

By the time I made it onto Four Springs I was getting tired and the snow was at least 6" deep in places. The higher I got the deeper the snow was, and the wind was progressively more noticeable. I had a long debate about whether it was worth it to get to Shovel Saddle, which was likely very windy, but decided my reticence was a lack of calories talking. I put my emergency blanket down on the snow right on the trail, set up my chair and stove, donned my puffy, and cooked myself a hot lunch and warm tea. After rest and fortitude I felt much better, and made the saddle no problem.

Four Springs trail was clear of deadfall and very easy to follow. Shovel Saddle was very windy but surprisingly it didn't freeze me out. The snowdrifts were pretty deep. I took some pictures before heading back down to the car.

Progress downhill was much faster. I did slip on the off-trail ridge segment once, but didn't get even a scratch. I filtered some water in the creek above the intersection with Pipeline, and man was it good!

Another set of human tracks were on Pipeline on my return, headed down. Otherwise the only people I saw were at the parking lot, and a gentleman with his grandson on Super a hundred feet or so from the trailhead. It was a tough hike up (until I ate something) but well worth the effort.

I've had my eye on this loop for a while, and it did not disappoint.
Chris had work until noon, so we got on the trail just after 1pm.
We ran into quite a few people (and dogs - all leashed) on their way down the Super, but once we turned off on the Pipeline trail, we didn't see another soul. Really pleasant hiking along that trail, especially with the creek flowing vigorously.
Little bit of elevation gain before the turnoff to the rock, enough to call it a workout ... I need to get back in hiking shape.
We climbed up the backside of the rock and enjoyed a nice long break up there, accompanied only by the four lizards who kept a close eye on us. Views are pretty fine. Definitely a special spot. We heard voices nearby at one point, but no one ever joined us.
The short trail back to the Super just flew by, and we saw our first person right before rejoining it ... Chris saw more of that person than I did, lol - she was pretty close to the trail for a potty break!
Cruising down was a breeze on the Super Trail, though it did seem a bit longer than I anticipated.
Flowers are still lining the trails, and a few mushrooms are hanging on here and there.
I imagine we will be hiking this loop many more times in the future.
Followed up by a night at the Santa Rita - first time staying in a cabin ... it was bigger, and the private deck was enjoyable, but I think I actually prefer my normal smaller casita - which is where we will be next time, in a few weeks.
Noted some Turkeys, Acorn Woodpeckers, Yellow-eyed Juncos, Mexican Jays, Painted Redstart, and one gorgeous Rivoli's Hummingbird who flew right up to inspect us while we were having coffee on the deck this morning - but did not keep a list or take any bird photos ... this trip wasn't about the birds. We also had several deer frequently browsing just behind the cabin.
All around a very enjoyable - if brief - visit.

Did this great loop with Brian and Jim. Starting from the Super trail, we missed the turn to get on the Pipeline trail to take us over to Armour spring. Instead we ended up doing a bushwhack and eventually hit some animal trails which took us up to the Four Springs trail. We took that to Armour spring and then Baldy Saddle. Brian and Jim hiked to the top of Wrightson, while I turned around at Baldy saddle and headed down to the bottom via Armour Spring, Roger's rock, and the Super trail for the final 1/4 mile. The temps were great at the highest elevations. It got a bit hot down below but it started raining near the bottom and that was quite refreshing!

A hike intended to be a loop reversing what Brian and I did last time, summiting Wrightson, and descending the Old Baldy Trail. Training for a hopeful Whitney summit in July, all of us opted to do an out and back, so we could "explore" descending a well worn social trail down to Roger's Rock. None of us knew of this trail, before. My longest hike in a good long while. I hope the GPS route borrowed and spliced from Nick and PMStirling is accurate.

Mike and Brian started around 7:30 and I didn't need to start so early, so I left the trailhead at 8:35. Everything went smoothly for me, finding the Pipeline Trail and proceeding up hill past Sylvester Spring, Kent Spring, and on to the Four Springs Trail. I was surprised when I ran into Mike and Brian at 2.2 miles into my hike. They missed the Pipeline Trail off of the Super Duper Trail, and ended up hiking well beyond it, eventually taking an obvious social trail which became the Rogers Rock trails, before hiking up to the Four Springs Trail only a few minutes before I met them.

I was able to hear a Trogon just before Kent Springs, while hiking up in the morning.

Everything went very nicely on the hike and conditions were really great. We stayed dry, but storms built over the Catalinas, and happy clouds were all around us for the day. Only in the evening did a welcome storm approach, but we were basically dry the entire day. Car got a wash on the drive out!

Brian and I hiked to the summit, Mike went to Baldy Saddle and started down ahead of us. We met up back at the saddle on the 4 Springs Trail directly below Pine Saddle. From there, we hiked down to the social trail which we thought might offer a short cut to the Pipeline Trail. Not a shortcut per se, but it took us to Roger's Rock, which was nice, and possibly Madera Springs, before eventually taking us to the Super Trail. If we knew the trails, we could have gone to Kent Spring or the creek crossing just below Sylvester Springs, but we instead hiked upslope (which is basically torture by this point) to the Super Trail, and hiked out on that. Doing so added about 1 mile of total hiking to what we would have done if we stuck with the Four Spring Trail and went down the way I hiked up in the morning, but it was okay. We all heard turkeys as a result. We were back at the trailhead by 7.

Sierra and I took a trip down to Madera to hike to Roger's Rock. we saw deer on the way in so we knew it would be a good day. One car at Round Up TH was further proof.

took the pipeline route over. Saw an elegant trogon in Kent Canyon :y:

had the Rock to ourselves and had a nice long leisurely lunch. took palm canyon up and came down longer route on super trail. we did not see anyone all day. it was definitely warm but bearable. it's hard to keep up with sierra on the uphill now. she has a set of bobby rockets.

stopped for freeze pops on the way out and laughed at the turkeys.

great day!

did the bog/kent loop with a trip out to roger's rock.

started from amphitheater TH and took that spur out to main loop. There was actually still water in kent canyon, running in some spots with little pools.

route out to roger's rock is in predictably great shape. the big tree where the spur to the rock splits from the route up fern canyon fell. random. nice and green with the fern looking good early in the season. took a break on the rock - a great place to be

back to the main loop for the steep climb up to kent springs, i love this part of the loop. nice and shaded. great water flow in sylvester spring. nothing at kent spring. coming down bog there is maybe one downed tree - no issue at all to get over. went and checked bog spring - still water in the trough. i followed the pipe and found a loose leaky connection. tried to mess with it as best i could and i left it looking better than i found it but who knows how long that will last.

rest of the hike was just very pleasant.

Took wifey and daughter to spend the afternoon at Roger’s Rock. Even in December with the leaves off the trees it’s a lovely trail. Running water in the creeks, saw deer on Super Trail. It was a little chilly but not too bad. Saw surprisingly few hikers even on Super. Overall a frabjous day.

Did a loop including a trip out to Rogers rock. Checked out the Kent spring cabin too, it’s been a while. Nice and green up there but the flowers aren’t really going yet and the creeks are just trickling. Heard 3 trogons but didn’t look for them.

Madera canyon is kind of being overrun right now with the catalinas being closed. Felt lucky to find a parking spot

Great time trying out a set of trails that are totally new to me on a day with perfect weather.

I did not know where I was going once the Pipeline trail hit Kent Springs - luckily someone who knew the area helped direct me to Roger's Rock, and then onto the shortcut up to Four Springs. I don't think I could've found either without wasting a lot of time. Too many new trails is a nice problem to have.

Roger's Rock was great. When I was almost done with the shortcut up to Four Springs I saw a HUGE bear walking below the trail. I think there was even a second bear with it but it was too far away and it was hard to tell through the trees. Had I seen this guy on the trail or at a campsite I would've **** my pants - be careful with your food folks.

The rest of the way was straightforward. Beautiful trail up to Shovel Saddle, a little scrappy but clear over to Armour Spring and the Crest Trail. McCleary is really fun, but a total mess if you aren't on the trail, so having a route helped. 88Mac is an easy bushwhack with one little scramble the way I went. Very steep climb down from Pine Saddle to Shovel.

I took a slightly different way back and missed the Pipeline trail - luckily there was a second trail leading back over the ridge to the Pipeline/Super trails not long after that.

This was day #3 of hiking in southern Arizona, and I went on one of my favorite hikes in AZ: a figure-8 loop hike up to Mount Wrightson.

We took the Old Baldy Trail up to the summit. We started early enough that we were in shade most of the way up. After hanging out at the summit and enjoying the views, we initially descended on the Old Baldy Trail. Shortly before getting to Baldy Saddle, we took the Super Trail and looped around Wrightson until we got back to the Old Baldy Trail at Josephine Saddle. I really like this descent -- it is a gentler descent than going back the Old Baldy Trail, and you have a nice view of Josephine Peak and Mount Hopkins along the way. There was a lot of cloud cover on the descent, and there were a few sprinkles of rain.

Once we got to Josephine Saddle, we took the Super Trail back down. Along the way we went off-trail down through Fern Canyon, and we enjoyed walking along the South Fork of Kent Creek. Along the way we stopped off at Rogers Rock and Kent Falls. There was still a decent water flow at the falls. We then took the Pipeline Trail back to the Super Trail and went the short distance back to the TH.

This is a great hike, and it was my 5th time up on Wrightson. One of the folks that I hiked with -- Tucson Bill -- did Wrightson for his 240th time!

A friend (veteran Santa Ritas hiker who had had trouble finding Roger’s Rock on his own by talking to other hikers) wanted me to help him navigate to it today. He does presentations at the different Pima County public libraries on the Santa Ritas, and is a docent taking kids groups on short hikes every week to learn about the history, plants and wildlife in Madera Canyon. I had never been to Roger's Rock either, but I knew how to find it thanks to HAZ!

We started off shortly after 7am, and it was probably 50 degrees at the time. It was a day full of deer and turkeys...just before reaching the trailhead, we counted off 20+ turkeys along the road in one area and a few more in another area. We saw several deer families as well, both on the road and on the trail during the day.

I decided to do the route described in this description (as a loop), but to hike it counter clockwise. Upon reaching the first switchback at the southernmost part of the loop on the Super Trail, he was telling me a New Age hangout spot off trail further up canyon, where they channel energy. On the way there, however, there is a spot known as The Curse. It's a spot with over a dozen petroglyphs (made in the last century, not by native Americans) and a curse etched into the rocks around them that reads, "WHOSOEVER SHALL DEFILE THIS PLACE, SHALL INVITE THE SUBTLE WRATH OF ITS SPIRITS." He knew about it because of an old hermit he has encountered several times in the Santa Ritas and befriended, who knows about all the little odd places in the range like this.

We then continued around to the Roger's Rock turnoff. On that little stretch, we were looking for black bear, because we ran into 3 piles of fresh scat who apparently has a healthy diet of manzanita berries  . Enjoyed some nice northern views out of Madera Canyon before heading back to the loop. Up there we noticed mine tailings along the ridge to the right in 4 different places, and an open mine shaft down below as well.

Before reaching the PIpeline Trail we took the Kent Spring Trail turnoff, to visit Sylvester Spring and Kent Spring...a steeper little section but doable. Kent was stagnant, but right next to it on the other side of the trail, a stream was flowing well, strangely enough. Coming back out we missed the Pipeline Trail...or actually I did, he didn't...we went a ways and I had to eat crow, tell him he was right, and head back.

On our way out, we stopped to look at the interpretive trail by the Proctor parking area, which gave us another half mile. He wanted to take a picture of a gravesite off the trail of an old Arizona pioneer, for a 3rd, new presentation he's writing on death stories in the Santa Ritas over the decades.

Limited trees change color in Madera Canyon, but the ones that do we’re turning color nicely

Looking east in Madera Canyon the rock walls and peaks that make up the Santa Rita Crest are just about as imposing as Wrightson itself. I decided to take a tour around it and summit three of its peaks- McCleary, 88 Mac (Peak 8853), and Mount Ian- before ending with Wrightson. Started around 6am and was the first car at the trailhead.

Super to Pipeline there was a gentle flow of water in the creek. Some of the trees down there are just beginning to change color for the fall but are still a while away from some nice color. Passed Roger's Rock and was happy it was just a side show on this hike. Four Springs was a little confusing as trails fork off a number of times, and it's unclear where they go. Trail is faint in spots by Armour Spring, but overall the trails were in good condition.

There is just enough of a trail to make the short climb out onto the ridge and over to McCleary a navigational non-issue. Rocky with a hint of scrambling.

Got onto the Crest Trail and decided to forgo Florida Peak. To have gotten it would have added a decent amount of elevation gain and around 2-3mi. Took Crest to the saddle by Mac, left the trail, and walked up the ridge. Much better ridge walk than McCleary: more open, and more even footing with better views along the way and from the top.

Back onto Crest and it moves down away from the peaks before rejoining them about 1-200ft below Ian's summit on the east side after some switchbacking. Very quick climb up to the top. A small colony of Ladybugs were still holding strong on Mac and Ian. A little bit of scrambling required, and there was no clear use trail from the direction I came, but leaving one existed intermittently.

Decided I couldn't skip Wrightson and the opportunity to look back over the way I came. Views were better with each peak. Shared Wrightson with a few other folks as clouds started to coalesce a few hundred feet above us.

Took Super 'round the mountain and enjoyed the warm sunshine and cold autumn wind. The Upper section of Super is one of my favorite stretches in the range, and yet is so much less trafficked than the lower section. Saw a twin-spotted rattlesnake around Riley Saddle. Wildflowers were moderate on super just above and below Josephine Saddle.

Josephine Saddle down on Super saw four groups of hikers. Evidence of recent bears on Pipeline, Four Springs, Super, and the northern parts of Crest. Temperatures ranged from low 60s to high 70s.
