Quick loop today. Super flat, but knew that going in! As a result, lots and lots and lots of bikers! Time to go to the superstition Ridgeline, LOL!

Enjoyed the beautiful views full of saguaros and interesting rock formations. Stopped for a quick snack by the crested saguaro on the coyote canyon trail (which is why my friend wanted to do this hike!). The volunteer at the granite mountain Trailhead mentioned the narrow area of the coyote canyon trail being like a slot canyon, but I think that is a bit of a stretch! 🤣 Nevertheless, this trail had some some good variety. I have not been on any of these trails before, so it was nice to try something new.

Enjoyed the perfect weather, and had a nice view of some stormy weather off to the northeast.

I see something happened to my route on routescout. It looks like it dropped off for a half mile and then re-engaged. Bummer. It was on airplane mode the entire hike, from start to finish.

This was my second hike north of the McDowells. Kelly had an old track with two peaks on it that provided a basis for our hike. We altered the hike from the track a couple times. Not unusual for our hikes.
We started hiking not long after first light. It was chilly, but within an hour or two we back down to summer hiking attire. Saw a couple coyotes near the trailhead.
The ascent up little Granite was off trail. Lots of rough granite boulders, catclaw, and other not so friendly brush on the way. We triumphed eventually after taking a more difficult route than necessary.
After descending we were looking over at Browns Peak, so off we went. The trail up to the peak is in good shape and not as steep as I suspected it might be. Good summit views.
Our next target was Cholla Mountain. After checking the time and remaining mileage, we decided to save Cholla and Fraesfield mountains for another day.
The trails here are all in good shape and well signed. Excellent for novice mountain bikers, of which we saw many. Beautiful desert flora and rock formations as well.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john hit me up to hike little granite mountain and cholla mountain in the mcdowell sonoran preserve north
we got going around 0700 or so
chilly temps - upper 30s when we started
bootlegger to the east side of granite mountain
we didn't take the best line on the ascent
our route was better on the descent going off west from the saddle
off trail in the mcdowells is slow going with sticker bushes, loose gravel and bouldering
it's also frowned upon by the preserve
we visited the balanced rock and the amphitheater along cholla mountain loop
i got distracted by brown's mountain, so we decided to hit that peak next
by the time we got back near cholla mountain, we were running into game time
returned the way we came after a visit to cathedral rock
beautiful day for a hike
lots of mountain bikers out, not as many hikers
we'll have to come back for cholla mountain sometime and explore some of the other trails
excellent linkage
thanks lp :)

Cholla to the left of me, catclaw to the right here I am stuck in the middle. I want my Mommy. I should have read the writeup or triplogs and if so, I would have worn long pants. Overall it was a nice hike and close to home. I took a wrong turn at the end and had to trek across the desert back to the power lines.

Another year another hike with Bob & Denny. The on trail part was easy except for all the people in the way. :pout: Bob led the charge. : rambo : Denny swept the route. A lot more pokey flora than expected but I always prepare for off trail delight. : wink : Lunch at Juan Jaimes was the best part.

Did our annual kids our own age hike today. Wally, Bob, and I are all 60 years young!! Bob picked Little Granite Mountain to summit. It was quite a little workout for me. We stretched it into almost 5 miles. We saw Sunray at the trailhead and chatted for a minute. Good to see ya!! Always enjoy the hikes with these two gentlemen!! Finished off the outing with lunch at JJ’s. Good times!!! Thanks gentlemen! Like HAZ, you rock!!

A friend of mine from the Air Force is in town and wanted to hike, so off we went to Fraesfield Trailhead in the McDowells North Preserve.
We combined four trails to make a lasso loop.

I was tempted to name this hike “Fish …. With A Rope On His Tail-Fin”.
That’s what the GPS track looks like. :)

The hike was all on trails and reminded me, again, how fast one can move, along a well groomed preserve trail. None of this ‘avoiding sharp things’, ‘climbing over things’, or ‘stopping every fifty feet’ to see where you should step next.

We saw alot of bikers and hikers.
My hike-mate and I laughed at 3 couples hiking together. The gals were bunched together and having a great time, and the three ‘straggling guys' had the “longest faces and frowns” you can imagine.
I think they wanted to be Anywhere except on a hike.

Anyway, it was a nice hike, on a nice day, with an old friend that wanted some exercise.
Good times.

Parked at Granite Mtn TH and set off for the peak.

Bootlegger :next: Saddlehorn :next: Granite Mtn Loop :next: Peak (return same way)

Along Granite Mtn loop we ran into Bruce and Komet - nice to see you two. The route to the peak is pretty easy, steep but not too bad and plenty of game trails. Great views and a fun little climb to find the benchmark which was hiding under the gravel.

Met at Granite Mtn Trailhead at 8:45 am for a McDowell Sonoran Conservancy wellness hike. I brought Caroline b/c she begged me and promised that she could handle it. "Is it with your blue shirt friends?" she asked. LOL, yes

Took Bootlegger :next: Granite Mtn Loop trail :next: Coyote Canyon trail :next: Dove Mtn trail briefly to see "Michelin Man" cactus :next: 136th Street trail back to trailhead.

This was Caroline's longest hike to date - and I was so proud of her behavior on the large group hike. She held my hand most of the hike and used her hiking stick a little. She ate all her snacks and carried her own water in her Grand Canyon junior ranger backback with a camelback water pack coming out the top.

There are phenomenal stands of saguaro on Granite Mountain Loop - I think the prettiest trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. When you hit the newly acquired Coyote Canyon trail (old trail but recently changed from state land trust to MSP land) - - it really is a spectacular hike for old stands of saguaro.

Double crested saguaro on Coyote Canyon Loop
"Michelin Man" saguaro on Dove Mtn trail
One of the oldest saguaros in MSP right next to crested arm near the water tank on Coyote Canyon Loop (see pics - they are GeoCoded)
HUGE owl nest on 136th Street trail (i'm going to post pics in a different post to write up that hike segment)

I also got to meet @ezpixels (she doesn't post here but does have an old account - but she's very active on Instagram and has written several books for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. She is a conservation photographer) -- I've "known" her for a year through IG and it was so great to meet her in person even if just briefly as she was biking by our group while we were in the little slot canyon. She created the MSC coloring books, Wildlife Book, Field Guide version 2.0, and makes christmas cards and prints of MSP photographs. Very talented lady!!

What a hike to remember :)

Today is our 12 year anniversary :D
While my in-laws were in town for C's birthday - I took advantage of free babysitting and got up early for a wellness hike as an MSC Steward to shadow hike assist.

Huge group for this hike. It was pretty cold and I needed my jacket most of the time. We kept a brisk pace but stopped 3 or 4 times to keep group together and point out natural landmarks, etc. McDowell Sonoran Conservany is a great organization - - highly recommend that fellow HAZers that frequent the McDowell trails join the MSC as donors or stewards or citizen scientist or all of the above. Lots of free lectures around town, guided hikes, nature guide activities. It's not just for retired people. You can subscribe to the email of upcoming activities through the MSC website or follow on Instagram. (Facebook and Twitter are not updated)

Got out for a great Monday hike in the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve with my friends Larry and Julia.

Started at the Fraesfield Trailhead and managed to find a place to park. Headed out on Whiskey Bottle trail up to the Powerline Road #2. East for just a smidge to Chuckwagon Trail. Followed that to Balanced Rock trail, and guess what?? There's a giant balancing on an even bigger giant rock!! Pretty cool. Continued on Balanced Rock to Granite Mountain Loop and jumped off on Granite Mountain trail and crossed the Powerline Road #2 trail south onto Black Hill trail all the way back to the trailhead.

All the trails are fairly flat and we made great time! Lots of birds hiding in the filled out bushes around every turn. Passed just a few other hikers, mountain bikers, and a couple of horsey women. Parking lot had double the number of cars in it upon return (2). Everyone I've taken up to Scottsdale Sonoran preserve seems to love it. It's a great retreat from all the other steep, rocky climbs found elsewhere in the valley.

First trip to the Granite Mountain trailhead in the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve. I was rewarded with a super cool (67 degrees) pre-dawn temps! Amazingly smooth trails and easy ascents. Hardly any damage from the recent monsoon rains. A nice departure from the ankle busting hikes I've been doing lately. Finished the loop in just over 2 hours and temps had only risen to 84 degrees. Very nice indeed!!

Unbelievable gnat volume - and so rare that we would abort a hike - but we did. The gnats were covering us all and kids were whimpering in frustration.
So we just packed up and went to Pinnacle Peak Patio and had a great time.

This area really is becoming one of our favorite places to hike, of course thats like picking your favorite child, or pet in our case. Not really sure what would classify as a super-loop, so I'll call this my "Sight Seeing Super Loop". This was the hike we attempted previously, but failed, missing the very first intersection with the Dove Valley Trail. I wanted ultimately to see what the "Ampitheatre" was on the official park map, and decided to throw in "Cathedral Rock" and "Balanced Rock" too. The only thing that would really make this "Super" would be to throw in "Brown's Ranch" but we had seen that already so chose not to add this to the trip.
I had no expectations, other than the fact that they were on a map I hadn't seen or heard about any of them. The "Ampitheatre" caught my attention because I was having a personal bet, one with myself, whether it was man-made or a natural formation. I was right, natural. I mean why would they build something so far away from the TH. Comparing with the other two sites however, it probably comes in third. Dare I say the "Balanced Rock" might make a better ampitheater.
I am almost forgetting about the fauna. No rattlers this time, but as I was spotting and photographing a large nest in one of the Saguaro Wendi spotted a nest in the colla right behind me. Inside were two tiny nestlings. Wrens maybe. Another odd thing were the falcons(maybe). We had three differant individuals sitting on top of Saguaros making sounds that I would describe as like the last breaths of a dying witch(?), if anyone knows what that would sound like. It was kind of rainy the night before and into this morning so Wendi thinks they were just cranky. Witches, I say.

Date hike :budrose: tonight with husband. Started around 3:45pm and there were 6 cars in the parking lot which surprised me. Reminder there is no water at this trailhead.

Our lasso loop route: 136th St express :next: Bootlegger :next: Saddlehorn :next: Granite Mountain Loop :next: Saddlehorn :next: Bootlegger :next: 136th St express :next: parking lot.

We varied our loop a little (last time we did the entire length of Bootlegger before intersecting with GML trail). I liked the first way better, but Brad liked tonight's route better b/c we were closer up to mountainside. Both times we have gone counter-clockwise at sunset.

Last time we slogged through Powerline trail at the end -yuck and boring, but it was pitch black dark. Tonight we finished in the most absolutely PERFECT light :D . Everything was cast in a silvery-purple tone. The granite formations are captivating on this trail. It's a beautiful loop with photo ops in every direction. Saguaros of every shape, size, configuration.

Had dinner at Greasewood Flat and then dessert across the road at Pinnacle Peak Patio.
