Half SoMo to celebrate full discharge today by Dr Goldenberg after retinal reattachment surgery and 10 week recovery period. Given permission to resume all ADL's prior to the surgery (including mountain biking on trails and plane travel)... :y:

Half-SoMo, carry-up, slo-ride...

After last night's stinker of a Yotes game, needed a socially acceptable to release some pent-up energy (albeit mostly frustration). Stopped many times to explore all the water damage still evident from earlier rains and the work that's begun for the Loop 2002 SoMo cut-through.

Half SoMo to balance yesterday's over indulgence.

What's up with the southwest petroglyph site (see photos)? Looks like an archaeological survey and maybe a move of the glyphs in advance of the Loop 2002 cut through South Mountain?

Stopped at the Loco Patron in Ahwatukee for a "cold cheap beer" on the last leg back home. Sat down at the bar and saw Arizona score and ASU's next set of downs without my existence ever being acknowledged. When a couple of guys sat next to me and got beers delivered by the bartender immediately, I knew it was time to leave... :( :( :(

Thought I'd start the month of September with a complete SoMo. 19.77 miles into the ride, I get turned back due to park closures from washouts from recent storm. Bummer! : :(

Carry-up Telegraph Pass and completed a west half SoMo. 88degF when I hit the trail, 98degF when I got home. Confess that I violated one of my summer desert rules being on the trail after 10:30am... :o

Gave Joe's HAZ Trak a whirl today using the updated satellite map feature - sweet! :)

Saw "hiker down" on Desert Classic not too far west of Pima TH. Paramedics had situation under control... :(

West half SoMo that included a "carry-up" Telegraph Pass. Encountered a light rain a couple of times (maybe that's why i saw nobody on the trail today).

Trail entry temp was 81degF (and very humid), exit it was 86 degF.

Used Joe's HAZ Tracks again today and uploaded to Route Mgr :next: viewtopic.php?f=84&t=8120

Question - do we get up at 3am to take le tour? :next: http://www.letour.com/us/

West-half SoMo giving Joe's "HAZ Tracks" iPhone app a test drive :next: HAZ Tracks by Joseph Bartels
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/haz-tra ... 86338?mt=8

Seems easy to use (we'll see if I can figure out how to upload my track for this trip), didn't drain my phone battery as much as Trimble Outdoors GPS app (nice battery management tools Joe running in the background!).

Suggestion to make it even better :next: can you import satellite map rather than just a topo similar to Trimble Outdoors app? The circa 1960 topo map for SoMo/Ahwatukee no longer reflect present day reality...

Start on the trail temp was 88 degF, finish it was 97 degF. What a difference in one day! :o

Reverse SoMo with stop at Loco Patron for a "cold, cheap beer" before completing the loop back home... :)

Full reverse SoMo. Good bookend for the week after finally having a chance to do Ajo Mountain Drive in Organ Pipe Cactus a National Monument :next: http://hikearizona.com/photoset=29562

Donated my peanut butter chocolate granola bar to a road biker that was taking an extended break in the shade and saying he was feeling a little light headed. Hope it was just a sugar low...

Broke up the ride by watching the midget racers in SoMo Park. Prices were right at the food stand (and those BBQ burgs were smelling awesome). :)

SoMo Circle Route – Jan2014

38.17 miles, 4:40:29 time, 1870 AEG (per FitBit)

Do two half SoMo’s make it whole?

Started on Desert Classic and headed towards Pima Trail Head. Cut through Beverly Canyon and onto Javelina Canyon Trail. Found a side trail that dumped me out by a reservoir by a fire station. This allowed me to join onto Highline Canal Urban Trail without skirting along a section of Baseline Road.

Once inside South Mountain Park, to the Box Canyon Loop up to Las Lomitas Picnic Ramada (closed to automobile access) and onto Las Lomitas Trail to Ranger Trail where we discovered a new trail – Derby Loop Trail.

At the intersection of Central Avenue and San Juan Lookout Road I was stopped by a Ranger. He indicated that access was closed due to a special event – “National Trail Trek Day” :next: https://phoenix.gov/parks/trails/specia ... index.html

” The 18th National Trail Trek is January 25, 2014!

Oh well, had a good conversation with the Ranger. Introduced him to a free GPS app for his iPhone – Trimble Outdoors before pushing off to more or less retrace my route home.

Spotted my first Mexican Poppy bloom of the year… :)

East Half SoMo (with Telegraph Pass carry-up)

Halving completed a West half SoMo with a carry-up Telegraph Pass yesterday (check out :next: [ photoset ] ), I naturally needed to complete an East half SoMo with a carry-up Telegraph Pass to maintain balance in the universe.

I met Clark Norgaard by chance hiking up Telegraph Pass. We chatted as I did the carry-up to the saddle.

From the saddle, I launched into a speed ride down Summit Road and onto Central Avenue before veering off to the Big and Little Ramadas Picnic Areas to check out a couple of (unknown to me) trails I hadn’t explored before – T-bone and Ma Ha Tauk. The T-Bone Trail connects to the Max Delta Loop and Crosscut Trails. Meandered east along the Crosscut Trail that morphs into the Las Lomitas Trail (or is it Los Lomitas Trail) and eventually deposits you at the South Mountain Park Visitor Center where I discovered another new (at least new to me) trail – Judith Tunnell Interpretive Loop.

After checking out the Judith Tunnell Interpretive Loop (no bikes allowed, so had to keep a constant eye on my bike), headed east across the parking lot to explore some of the Box Canyon Loop, Holbert Trail, and Box Canyon. I found a new connector trail from the Holbert TH to the north end of 7th Street.

From 7th Street, I joined onto the Highline Canal Urban Trail before connecting with the Beverly Canyon Trail and Desert Classic at the Pima TH. Desert Classic took me home allowing enough time to catch the 4th quarter of the Packers/49ers game…

My new tubeless tires continue to ride well on the trail albeit they did add noticeable weight for the carry-up. Some of the “new to me” trails marked on the official SoMo Park map :next: https://phoenix.gov/webcms/groups/inter ... 062880.pdf

West Half SoMo (with Telegraph Pass carry-up)

I tried something new today – a half SoMo with a carry-up Telegraph Pass. This included a speed ride down Summit Road and onto San Juan Lookout Road before connecting onto the National Trail and a (new to me) section of the Gila Trail.

Found a petroglyph site along this (new to me) section – seemingly confirmed by the reference map in “Landscape of the Spirits – Hohokam Rock Art at South Mountain Park” by Bostwick and Krocek (check out :next: https://www.uapress.arizona.edu/Books/bid1447.htm ) on page 13.

Exited the Gila Trail extension by one of the “House Hunters Phoenix” shack ruins (check out :next: [ photoset ] ).

My new tubeless tires seemed to ride well :) on the trail albeit they did add noticeable weight for the carry-up… :(

Groundhog Day of SoMo Circle Route – 03Jan2014

I’ve seen this movie before – out in the middle of nowhere and I hear a “POP” followed by a “HISSSSSSSSSSSS” followed by a few @#!!$%&@#*! This is the third time I’ve been stranded with a flat-tire on my new bike in less than 3 months!!!

Pushed the bike back from near the intersection of Central Avenue and San Juan Lookout Road to Los Dos Molinos (check out :next: https://losdosmolinosphoenix.com/ ) waiting for my daughter Tobyn to pick me up in her F-150. Once rescued by Tobyn, we dropped my bike off at Ahwatukee Global Bikes (check out :next: https://globalbikes.info/ ) and discussed the situation with Mark and Tristan.

I’ve been mountain biking since the mid-80’s with my original bike a Rocky Mountain hard-tail. My second bike was a full suspension Fuji I purchased upon arrival in Arizona in 2003. I can only recall being stranded on the trail once with an unrepairable flat (for me, trail repair means only adding some air to a gel filled multi-walled tube) after approaching 30 years of riding. Given the 3 strikes on my Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 29er, despite migrating to gel filled multi-walled tubes, I needed something much more rugged and reliable.

Time to try a tubeless set-up (Specialized Fast Trak Control 29x2.0 2Bliss Ready) :next: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftb/m ... l#features

At $100 per tire installed, let’s see if they’re worth the $$$ - stay tuned for ongoing reports… :wrt:

South Side Half-SoMo

Started at Ray Road Access Trail and looped Desert Classic over to the Telegraph Pass TH by Desert Foothills Parkway. From there, I joined onto the Gila Trail (pirate section) to join the Pyramid Trail and thee connector over to Lost Ranch Ruins.

My hats off to whoever removes all the graffiti that keeps showing up on the Lost Ranch Ruins!

I continued on the Gila Trail over the saddle and beyond until you reach the Gila River Indian Reservation boundary. Headed south along the hydro 4WD access track until you reach the Pecos Road extension on the Gila River I.R. Interesting giant cotton rolls on the Rez – sort of like giant hay rolls :next: http://hikearizona.com/photo=287871

Desert is certainly green these days - setting up for a stellar spring wild flower show? Saw some of my first wild flower blooms today - brittlebush in the washes.

Back home just in time to catch the Cards kick-off…
