Headed down to the chookas for my first visit up the Carr Canyon Road since 2015. The road was in sedan shape up to the winter gate at the perimeter trailhead. From there it gets a little dicey and even a subi-type vehicle might have trouble in a couple of spots.

I like this range in September, but this year was significantly drier than it was 9 years ago; less green, fewer flowers, and much less flowing water. And it was still great. It was surprising to see a grove of aspens along the Carr Peak Trail have begun their autumn transition.

Temps stayed in the 60s all day, except for the brief visit to Carr Peak where it dropped into the 50s. A light southwest breeze was perfect accompaniment to the day, only reaching irritable levels funneling up and over Bear Saddle.

Got to see another twin-spotted rattlesnake on the Crest Trail (my 3rd ever, after seeing 2 on a trip here three years ago. These guys are tiny, and might have the highest range of any rattlesnake species - up to 11,000 feet. Always a treat to see one.)

We opted against the trip out to Ramsey and instead headed down Pat Scott. The climb up Comfort Springs was as miserable as I remember. I had forgotten about the bonus field of poison ivy to negotiate in the last mile, but managed to wade through it mostly unscathed.

All in all, an enjoyable day in the chookas.

It was apparent that there has been one short night of frost damaging some of the most sensitive flowers. Still a bunch hanging on, but the season will end fast.

Springbox was dry. There's a use path leading uphill toward the point on the topo map that indicates the spring source. I did not hike up to check for water at the source.

Left NW Tucson with Tim around 6 am. Drove my RWD Chevy Colorado up Carr Canyon but couldn't make it all the way to the top of the road because of the condition of the road. 4x4 is really needed on at least 2 sections near the top. We decided to park the truck on the side of the road and just hike from here. We knew it would add some extra miles but we felt we could make and had lamps which we needed for the final part of the hike. It ended up being 1.9 miles to Ramsey Vista campground at the top, so 3.8 miles additional had we been able to drive to the top of the road.

We starting hiking on Carr Canyon rd at 8 am. The elevation at our starting point was about 7,150 feet. We took the following route up.

walk up 1.9 miles of Carr canyon road
Comfort Spring Trail # 109
Hamburg Trail # 122
Pat Scott Canyon Trail # 123
Crest Trail # 103

There was a good amount of down hill hiking on the Comfort Spring Trail. At the junction with the Hamburg trail there were signs marking all trails that intersected. The Pat Scott Canyon trial was shaded by many pines and pleasant with a lot of soft pine needles making the trail easier to hike. We got to the saddle and junction with the Crest trail at around 11:50 am. Pat Scott North was about 1/4 mile North of us but we decided to stop at the saddle for lunch and a long well-deserved break. After lunch we continued on to Pat Scott North. I thought about hiking Pat Scott "South" on the way back if there was time. It was only about 1 extra mile out of the way and I wasn't sure if I even wanted to do it on this trip because this hike was going to be very long.

We continue North on the Crest trail. I summitted Pat Scott North which was only a few minute hike above the Crest trail. Tim stayed below since he already did this summit a few months before. I signed the registry, took some photos, and got back on the Crest trail heading North. We took this trail about 1/2 mile North of Pat Scott North peak. We knew we would need to head East somewhere in this area to get to Ramsey peak. We didn't see any signs or obvious trails but we did see a barbed wire fence that separated Forest service land with the Huachuca Military base land. We turned right here and followed the fence line up for a while. We eventually saw a use trail or perhaps an old unmaintained trail heading in the direction of Ramsey peak. We followed that for a while, losing the trail at times and picking up other trails that led in the same basic direction. Because we saw multiple trails we thought these must be animal trails. In some areas we saw what looked like bear prints in soft dirt areas leading around the mountain or up. In some places we found ourselves bushwhacking but realized we were better off staying North of the ridgeline, so we dropped back down. There were only a few places where we could actually see Ramsey peak because there was so much tree cover blocking the way.

Eventually we found ourselves at the actual summit. There was a rock pile with a registry and some great views to the South. To the Southeast we were able to see Carr peak and the highest point in the range, Miller peak, which was behind Carr. We had already logged 8.9 miles to this point and knew by the time we finished this hike, we would be at nearly 18 miles. After signing the registry and getting our photos/videos and taking a long break, we finally left the summit around 3 pm. We had a long way to go to get back but we were prepared with head lamps.

On the way back, we stopped for a few short water breaks and a longer break back at the Pat Scott canyon trail junction around 4:30 pm. Then, we continued heading down the Pat Scott canyon trail. After a while, we saw some water flow in the canyon and some larger pools. We were getting low on water so we decided to stop to filter some more drinking water. I filled up an entire 1/2 gallon jug in a few minutes and filter about 1 quart for Tim. We keep moving on. It was very humid in the canyon with no breeze at all, which slowed our pace. At around 6:25 we intersected with the Hamburg trail and then a few minutes later reached the Comfort Spring trail. The Comfort Spring trail was a bit rocky, and there was a lot of uphill to do. We were already tired at this point, but we kept pressing forward, taking a lot of short water breaks on the way. We turned our headlamps on right before 8 pm and had another half mile of trail to do before reaching the road / Ramsey Vista campground area. Nobody was camped up here today. We didn't see a single person on the trails all day.

After getting to the road, my headlamp went out and we only had 1 light between the 2 of us. We were incredible tired at this point, but we still had 1.9 miles left of road hiking. We took our time in the dark, and took a few needed water breaks. We could feel the humidity, even as late as 9 pm. We eventually made it back to my truck around 9:20 pm. It was a very long day.

After the hike we stopped at McDonald's and each got a $5 McDouble combo meal + an extra McDouble. I haven't had McDonald's food in years and was honestly impressed by the relatively good value in the Bidenonmics era. The $5 combo meal came with 1 McDouble, a small fry, 4 chicken nuggets, and a drink. The extra McDouble was something like $3.39. The entire bill for both of us was under $16 which was a surprise. But, my "go to" burger is still the old reliable and customizable flame broiled BK Whopper!

Hiked down to the first reliable (some flow most of time) stream crossing. This is usually a very lush spot along the trail, so if you want a quick hike from Ramsey Vista to a pleasant destination, this works. The main more open basin where Comfort Springs is located is a short distance beyond, but as soon as you start up the small divide from here, you will encounter a rather dense area of poison ivy which is boldly encroaching the trail. For my hike today, with issues I have been having with leg strength and balance, I turned around rather than risk a face plant in that crap. I have also been having some hip pain issues of late, so I wanted to get a little walking in to see how things felt. There was only a slight trickle in the creek, but I was not surprised given our less than stellar rainy season.

I did this short saunter without trekking poles, since I wanted give myself a true unaided test.

Today seemed like a good day for the Huachucas. Kelly and I started from Ramsey Vista Campground shortly after 0700 and headed down Comfort Springs Trail. Cool to start, which was nice.

Hopped onto Hamburg Trail for a minute, then onto Pat Scott Canyon Trail. Lots of water along the trail, with numerous water crossings—all easy. Some deadfall, but nothing too difficult. Finally topped out at the Crest Trail and headed north to what may or may not be Pat Scott Peak. Either way, it has some nice views.

Headed back south on Crest to what also may or may not be Pat Scott Peak on the other side of the junction. Different maps say different things. Steeper climb to this one, but not bad. We dubbed one Pat Scott and the other Patricia Scott. Regardless, we got the peak one way or another.

Once back on the Crest trail again, we headed south for a few miles. Pleasant hiking through the trees, with nice views on either side of the ridge. After Bear Saddle, the climb up to the junction with Carr Peak Trail was a bit warm.

Carr Peak Trail was much easier, with a side trip up to the peak. Had a snack up there and enjoyed the gathering clouds. Up until the peak, we had only seen one other hiker all day, a woman who was doing nearly the same loop as us. Saw a half dozen hikers at the peak, but we had the summit to ourselves most of the time.

The descent off Carr down to the campground is mostly easy with a moderate grade. One or two short sections of rocky trail, but felt like a breeze to finish out the loop. Fun day, and good to hike with Kelly again.

Took Ellen down to the old Hamburg mine and back. Wifey tagged along for the first mile or so.

It was a stormy-ish day with low, fast-moving clouds and occasional sprinkles but no real rain. Gorgeous to see Carr Peak and Ramsey covered in cloud.

Wildflowers were insane.

Love the Huachucas!

Decided to hit up an area I had not hiked in before so I got up before the sun and made the drive down to the Miller Wilderness in the Huachuca Mountains. Headed up Carr Canyon, parked at the Ramsey Vista Campground and started off. The hike starts off at 7,300 feet and is initially a bit rocky and has more manzanita then pine trees (due to a fire years ago), but the scene changes to a pine forest as you descend. Came to the first creek crossing which had a nice cold flow and started up the small ridge. As I started up, the trail runs next to a small wash and the entire area was covered in grass including a good portion of the trail. About half way up I heard a really fast and pissed off rattle. I stopped, looked down and saw the rattlesnake not more then a foot away from me just off trail in the grass and my fist instinct was to run uphill. Fortunately it was feeling sympathetic as it did not strike me even with me only being a foot away. I continued about a half mile up to the top of the ridge, still thinking about my close encounter and decided at that point that I was done and started back. With all of the grass and the warm, humid weather I did not want to chance getting close to a rattler and I was too paranoid to continue. I felt blessed to not get bit the first time and did not want to take any more chances. Did not get enough time in this wilderness, definitely want to spend more time there once the snakes go bye bye.

I'd never hiked Sunnyside 117 so I figured it would be a fun way to get up into the chookas to enjoy the abundant wildflowers this range provides after monsoon rains. We figured it would be a good one to make an overnight and camp near the crest. The forecast called for some good chances of rain and we dodged a few drops on both Saturday and Sunday along with some robust lightning and breezes, but the major cells avoided us.

The lower part of 117 was a pleasant streamside walk, with plenty of flowing water and beautiful shaded oak forest. From the old mine site at Rattlesnake Spring, the trail is a steep and brutal climb that ended up breaking us all. Except for cheating and driving up to the reef, there is simply no trail that gets to the top of this range that isn't an aggressive climb. Carrying an overnight pack makes it tougher.

Just before the crest, I got buzzed by a twinspotted. It's the 2nd one I've seen, and I do really like them ... they're so small! After a couple miles of traversing along the crest we finally found a spot and set up camp and took an extended break. The planned trip over to Miller was replaced with some much-earned do-absolutely-nothing time! But after a storm cleared the area we found some energy and headed over to Carr under beautiful late afternoon light ... where I encountered another twinspotted on the trail! :y:

We settled in front of a warm fire on a pleasant evening that didn't drop below 50. After a lazy and slow morning we began to pack up camp. Again we decided against a trip out to Miller and instead began the 8 mile descent back down the hill. After discussion we opted to skip making a lasso loop with the Eureka trail in favor of the pleasant creekside hike in Sunnyside.

On the way down, we encountered Belinda and crew on their way up and chatted for a bit. As we crossed the wilderness boundary we encountered a gaggle of AZT hikers who had passed by camp the night before. They were in better spirits today but may have been a bit jealous our hike was ending at the 117 trailhead and not the 5 extra miles to Parker. Besides a couple of trail runners Sunday morning, they were the only other hikers we saw.

On the drive home we stopped in Sonoita for a bit to enjoy the Santa Cruz county fair with a quick spin on the ferris wheel.

Got started a little after 0700 from Ramsey Vista and headed down Comfort Springs Trail. The trail was soft from recent rains, but not muddy. It’s a pleasant walk downhill, with nice views. At Hamburg Mine, we got onto Pat Scott Canyon Trail and started heading back uphill. Not too hot, but very humid.

At the Crest Trail, we headed north after a short break. At the end of the Crest Trail, we veered east, following the barbed wire fence. The off trail kind of sucks, the soil on the north side of the ridge is very loose and you sink into it. Following the top of the ridge is a vegetation nightmare. When I was here four years ago, the was a faint path on the north side of the ridge, but that has pretty much disappeared. Encountered one large, angry rattler not too far from the summit—the damn thing seemed to want to chase me for a moment while I circled wide around it.

Another break at the summit, then headed back down. Clouds were gathering by the time we reached the Crest Trail, and it was cloudy with frequent rumbles of thunder for the last five miles. The rain held off until we reached the trailhead. Fun hike, but I probably won’t bother with Ramsey Peak again.

What an awesome hike! Loved this today. Wanted to get in a good hike with views with my buddy Jason, and get out of the desert heat. So many fires burning so many good ranges, feel like options are limited these days. Remembered the Huachucas from doing Arizona Trail segment 1, so glad I did. Amazing views, birds chirping all over the place, and the fresh smell of pine in many places. Honestly I think this is one of my favorite ranges in the state. There were a couple of spots where we saw vestiges of illegal activity…oddly places pieces of clothing that upon closer looks revealed unofficial trails, and empty Mexican electrolyte bottles, but not too bad.

Ramsey Vista campground is so nice in that you start hiking at 7200 feet, so no hiking down to lower elevations in the heat of the day. Did the loop clockwise which was a good choice, though there were some warm, exposed spots near the end that were a little toasty even at 7000 ft.

Carr Peak is totally bare and exposed, unreal views. So much of this loop has incredible views, as you get a 360 view from beginning to end.

Surprised by how the AZT was almost totally unmarked in the section we did, especially with all the trails it crosses in that section.

Also surprised that we didn’t run into a single hiker the entire day. Granted it was a Friday, but still! This time of year?! With the limited options we have around Tucson?

Second time in the Huachucas. Threw together a loop that'd see more Crest and get me on top of Ramsey and the brothers Pat Scott. Had a go from the Sawmill TH around 6am. Road is probably doable in low clearance, but I wouldn't if it were my investment.

Sawmill Trail up to Carr Peak Trail. Really just a connector for those of us looking to save a few minutes driving time. Most reliable spring en route was putting out a decent flow and should be for a couple months more.

Carr Peak trail swings up the mountain quickly. Good tread, least tree cover on the day. Carr Peak views hazy in the early morning. Offers the best angle on Miller and time to wonder about the ubiquitous zeppelin down in the foothills.

Down Carr to Crest then out and back to Miller. More good tread this time through the surviving forest of fir and pine. Up the ridge steeper and steeper as it nears the Miller Peak Trail. Passes through a huge, young grove of aspen. There is a lot to see along this loop come autumn, expanding my search for this year outside of Ramsey Canyon. Half the elevation gain is out of the way by the time Miller summit comes. Best views of day, apart from maybe Ramsey.

Crest all the way back to the Carr jct. Clouds started to coalesce over the mountains. Kept going to the Hamburg jct and the track became unfamiliar. Perfect weather for the money stretch of Crest Trail. From Granite Mountain to the end of Crest at the Fort Huachuca border, I'm not sure there's better hiking in the state. It is as good as anywhere. Shady in the fir, cold breeze, and warm intermittent sunlight. Will never take Wisconsin Canyon down again, it is so worth it to loop around to Pat Scott Canyon.

Got Pat Scott #1 on the way to Ramsey and #2 on the way back. #1 is several times better than #2, which is marked as Pat Scott Peak on most maps. Weather increasingly dramatic as I started the climb up Ramsey.

The topos I looked through differed on the whether or not there is a trail to Ramsey, and it turned out there isn't one. Ascending Ramsey was probably the hardest part of the loop. It is easiest to summit if you stay north of the ridgeline, otherwise it is a good bushwhack. Unfortunately, this involves trespassing onto military property. If stepping 50ft into the seldom traveled upper reaches of military land is a deal breaker, I would say the peak cannot be summited using the ridge I did. The only person I met all day was on the summit tinkering with a ham radio when I got there. He came straight up the ridgeline from the preserve, a shorter, more difficult, and legal route. I asked what he made of the military border, and he shrugged. There are no signs marking it, no signs forbidding passage, only a fence line that is broken where the deer cross and somebody has marked the route by hanging reflective yellow flags from tree limbs.

Pat Scott Canyon back down. Just as good as Wisconsin Canyon. Firs, pines, oaks, maples. Really might make a good fall loop if the timing is right. The canyons in the Huachucas steep as anything, but Pat Scott makes easy work of the quick descent.

After that Hamburg for about 5 minutes before Comfort Springs. Beautiful woods on the backside of Carr. Second hardest part of the day was ascending Comfort springs and getting back out of the canyon. Once down around the Hamburg Mine, there was still ~1200 feet to gain. Pushed through that last section looping back around. Only saw the one hiker, not too busy up there. Temps from 40s-70s.

Started out at Ramsey Vista Campground and hiked to the Ramsey Canyon Preserve where my ride awaited. The comfort springs trail is nice, few slick spots as you're hiking down the last leg of the trail into Ramsey Canyon, but overall a very nice and cruisy single track. Once down into the canyon I made a right heading northeast along the Hamburg trail. This pathway is also in great shape with excellent signage. Being ahead of schedule I slowed down quite a bit through the canyon to take in the smells and fall color of the canyon. You'll get about a mile of solid fall color until the trail begins it's short climb out and then back down to the Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Managed to scare a pretty big sow and her cub, twice (pretty sure it was the same bear/cub) on my hike. Other than the black bear, lots of Coues White Tail and squirrels and I think either a coyote or a fox.

For the most part my hike was enjoyed in solitude, saw one other person coming down into Ramsey Canyon as I was exiting, maybe 5-10 people doing the loop in the preserve, and probably 20+ congregating near the Conservancy Center and complaining about the 'freezing cold' 55 degree temps.

Good hike, wish it were about three to four miles longer and I had a bit more time to spare. There is always next year.

At the higher elevations it's done. The maples are faded/brown or it went from green to drop (see photos). Down in Ramsey Canyon things are prime, good time to go.

Nice figure-8 route on a mostly overcast monsoon day. Up Lutz to the Crest, up Miller and Carr Peaks, around on Comfort Springs, back up on Hamburg, down Miller and out to Hunter trailhead. Bike shuttle back to Lutz trailhead. Good water at 2 springs plus light creek flow in two places along Comfort and also in Miller Canyon.

Every trail I've done so far in the Huachucas has been outstanding - I'll be back!

Linda and I got started a little before 08:00 to wonderful temps and a stout breeze. Though pretty mellow, the climb begins immediately all the way to Carr. By the time we arrived at the spur to Carr peak, we had absorbed enough solar radiation to have broken a bit of a sweat, and were now rounding the corner into the shade and a stiff wind. Though it was a short go, it was pretty biting, then as we topped out the atmosphere turned absolutely perfect, sunny, calm & cool. We didn't stay long as we had a long way to go and I was already lagging, so we headed over to the Crest to make our way to Miller. I really loved this section; great views, largely shaded, protected from the wind, level-ish. Soon enough, we were on the ascent again, and not long before reaching Miiler, I was already running on fumes. It was at this point that I secretly tethered myself to Linda's pack and just let her tow me along. Every now and again I would carry my own weight so as to not raise too much suspicion. At the peak we encountered 3 humans just sitting there. Strangely, they didn't seem at all afraid of us, so we just calmly bypassed, being careful not to startle them as they continued their foraging.
After a break at the peak, it was time to get rolling. The trip so far had be rather rough on me, as I was not feeling too wonderful, so I was really looking forward to the downhill side. The trip back took us down the Hamburg Trail into Wisconsin Canyon, which has got to be in the top 3 most beautiful canyons in SoAZ. It's a massive, steep, dense, green ecosystem that will drop your jaw. Pretty soon we were on the Comfort Spring Trail, the final stretch. I had long since run out of gas and Linda was simply dragging my lifeless body behind her up the final incline, yet unaware of the tether between us. Once back to the TH, I kissed the level ground as Linda and I said our goodbyes.
Another beautiful day above the 7,000 ft mark, over incredible trails, in excellent weather and in the finest of company.
Thanks Linda for makeing the long trip.

Met up with Matt at the Ramsey Vista Campground around 0745 and headed up to Carr. Breezy to start, and almost cool. The trail is rocky at first, but a reasonably pleasant incline, and eventually the rocks give way to a nicer tread. At the turn to head up to Carr Peak, which is now signed, it gets a lot steeper. We took our time heading up to the summit, fighting wind the entire way. Oddly enough, there was almost no wind at the summit, and the views were nice, but hazy.

We continued along Carr over to the Crest Trail at the top of Miller Canyon and headed over to Miller Peak, regaining all of the elevation we'd just lost. The Crest Trail was warm at times when the breeze was blocked. Breezy again when we turned up to Miller. Nice lunch break at the top, and very few bugs. After that, we headed back north on Crest over to Bear Saddle, where we turned onto Hamburg Trail.

The top part of Hamburg was a steep descent, but nice. The lower half wasn't as steep, and had some running water. I like the vegetation in Wisconsin Canyon, and always tell myself I need to head back out here in the fall. Turned onto Comfort Springs trail and began our uphill hike back to the trailhead. Luckily, it's not steep, and seemed to go by quickly.

Saw 8 other hikers--6 in the first half of the hike, 2 near the end. Nice loop, with plenty of up and down, and the breeze generally kept it from feeling too warm. The road in is rough, but there was a Honda Accord at the trailhead. I would not recommend a sedan on that road, but I guess it's doable. Good to see Matt again, and an enjoyable hike.

About 10 gallons of clear water at the springbox. A lot more running water in the next drainage to the east of Comfort Spring, just below the trailhead.

Plethora of deer ears underway. New Mexico Locust is blooming, some 50 ft trees too.

Initial climb up sweaty, bridge walk over delightful. Then heading up Miller was a half-mile cloud of dense gnats.

Upper Pat Scott is among the nicest stretches of trail in AZ. Passing below Hamburg it's more Pinal fab.

FR 368/Carr Canyon Road
Heading up the road looked pretty gnarly at one turn in the zig-zag switchbacks. My thought was I couldn't recommend a stock tire sedan or low clearance. Returning I didn't notice that crater dip or it was easier to get around than previously thought. JJ still thought little sharp rocks in the upper portion might not be good for stock sedan tires.

A late afternoon arrival to camp at Ramsey Vista CG. After setting up there was some daylight left, so I headed down the trail to the spot where water is almost always flowing. It is always nice to visit this place so close to the campground. :) A serene, rain free night was enjoyed at camp. :D

Wanted to hit Carr, Miller, and the Comfort Springs Loop in an effort to step my sky island game up.

Parked down the road from the Sawmill Springs Trailhead at the big Coronado NF sign a little after sunrise because I refused to take my sedan any farther up the road. On the way down the mountain later that day I passed a couple in a Dodge Challenger, so I was probably just being a wimp.

Started at Sawmill and with a summit of Carr. Passed three PhD students from IL and SC looking for Two Spot rattlers and others. They had snake sticks, or whatever they are called, and were looking to collect some venom.

On the trail between the Carr spur and the trail to Miller there must have been twenty-five white tail deer up and down slope.

On the way from Miller Peak to the Comfort Springs turn off I passed three men who were headed up to Miller. They asked about my route and I told them. They remarked that it was a long hike, which was nice to hear after being humbled by the trips many of the HAZ contributors regularly make.

About a mile down from Bear Saddle in Wisconsin Canyon, where on the topo the trail skirts below the 7800ft contour, I came twenty yards from two black bear cubs posed up in a tree next to the trail. Couldn't claw my camera out of my pack in time and they, as well as a third, bigger bear, scrambled down slope. With no pictures and the bears disappeared among the trees, I called out to keep them away.

Rest of the trip was a nice jaunt up and down through the woods on the backside of the mountains. There was a healthy breeze the whole trip, and to my absolute surprise the temperature never rose above 81F.

Only saw those two sets of hikers until I neared the campsites where families had made their way up for the 4th of July.

I posted the RS route and stats for the trip because I'm very skeptical of the AEG. Not sure I did enough rambling around areas of interest to gain almost 1000ft more than about what the route should have been.
