Thursday was declared a paid holiday to honor the passing of 100 year old Jimmy Carter. Gave up after texting 5 friends, apparently most are working. Ok, I'll go out on my own somewhere that is normally too crowded for my preference.

Decided to head to Tom's Thumb TH to go for E End Peak. 48° upon arrival and of course, I was starting later than most would on here. A fraction of the vehicles I would expect to see. Score! Found the spot to leave the trail a lil before you'd reach E End Trail.

A steep climb up a use trail that is fairly easy to follow. Reach a solar generator just shy of the peak. I started a registry at the high point. Somewhat slippery on the way down. Added on Tom's Thumb+the lookout. Plus explored some side trails that were new to me.

Bruce and I got out for a morning adventure. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this one. Nice workout.
The eclipse was cool as well! A lot of people on the way down.
Great temps, hike, and company!
Thanks Bruce! Like HAZ, you rock!

Denny got me out of the house for a hike up to Tom's Thumb. We had the added treat of the Annular Solar Eclipse. Going up, the crowds were not too bad. A stop at the Thumb and then over to the Lookout.

Going down, the crowds thickened. We were lucky enough to run into people with glasses to look at the eclipse. We met them at the right time as the eclipse peaked. I tried unsuccessfully to take a photo through their glasses. I pointed out to Denny how you could see the status of the eclipse in the shadows and using your hands.

The other interesting thing about the eclipse is how the temperature dropped during the event. It was 78 degrees before, and just after the peak, it got down to 69 degrees.

It's good to stretch out with the turtle again.

Cloudy not too crowded. Almost zilch wildflowers but very green. Didn’t gun it today - just nice leisure pace. The construction in the bajada area on 128th and Ranch Gate road is wow now. Happy Valley road is a hot mess - going via Dynamite smart. And absolutely do not traverse Pima Road unless you like idling in your vehicle. Take Scottsdale Rod in any way you can.
Going Hayden doesn’t help you get stuck on Happy Valley and it’s closed with concrete wall at junction with Pima (west bound Happy Valey).

Yesterdays storms look like they hit this area pretty good. There were plenty of spots on the way in on Happy Valley Rd where bulldozers had pushed dirt off the pavement. I only had .48 inches 10 miles west of this TH, they had much more. 77 degrees and 77% humidity when I left the house.

I was hoping for a potential @BobP sighting, but it appears he was in Flag. It's August, and the McDowells are unexpectedly green. I lost the clouds and there was no breeze on the climb, so I was glistening just a smidge.

Out to the end of the Lookout Trail to take a quick break to dry off in the light breeze.

I hadn't been out to the Thumb in quite awhile, so I hit that on the way back. Saw a guy on a mountain bike climbing the hill and called him crazy. He replied "Thanks!"

1st trip
I decided to make my once-a-year appearance at the Toms Thumb TH and do this figure 8 loop, which is a combination of the Hog Heaven Loop and the Toms Thumb-Wingate-East End Loop.

I started out by heading up to the HangnailThumbnail, which is on the ridgeline south of East End Peak. This is steep and a bit slippery climb, with some class 2 and class 3 climbing that is ever-so-slightly exposed in a couple of places. I got a good workout on this portion of the hike, and then did some class 2 hiking over to East End Peak. It's always nice to be on the highpoint of the McDowells.

The descent from East End down to the Tom's Thumb Trail is steep and slippery on loose dirt and pea gravel, but I took my time and made it down with no problem.

I did not go to Toms Thumb, but I did make a sidetrip to The Lookout, which has some nice views of the McDowells.

Once I got back on the Toms Thumb Trail, I made the steep descent on mostly rocky terrain to the Windgate Pass Trail. This was my least favorite part of the hike, due to the rocky terrain. Going up to Windgate Pass was uneventful, then it was on to the steep uphill climb on the East End Trail back to the Toms Thumb Trail. You'll get a good workout on this portion of the hike.

Once back on the Toms Thumb Trail, it was uphill for a bit, and then downhill back to the TH.

Not surprisingly, there were quite a few people out in the afternoon going back down to the TH once I got back on the Toms Thumb Trail. I did not see anyone on the hike until I descended from East End and got to the Toms Thumb Trail.

It was a nice day for a hike, although the full sun was not too welcome on the climb up on the East End Trail. Thankfully the temperature was not too hot and there was a bit of a breeze.

I did this hike once before, 11 years ago. At that time the trailhead wasn't developed at all. It's been so long since I've been to this trailhead, I forgot that it's been developed, complete with the dreaded timed gate that won't allow anyone to hike before sunrise. I ended up waiting over a half hour at the gate once I arrived. Once I got to my parking space, I got out of the car and saw dozens of cars behind me on their way to their parking spots :o .

The foot traffic in this area has increased substantially since my first visit. I was quickly able to get away from the intial crowd and passed a few people on the way up Tom's Thumb  . The ascent up this trail was probably the fastest I hiked the whole day. the trail here is very smooth and not at all rocky. I've noticed that the really rocky trails slow me down way more than the steepness of a trail. Once I was past the saddle heading west on the Tom's Thumb Trail, most of the crowd was gone. the morning sunlight hitting the top of the mountains up there gave the best views and pics of the day.

I got to the Lookout quickly, took the obligatory pics, and headed back down to do the loop around it (Tom's Thumb, Windgate Pass, and East End). heading downhill on Tom's Thumb to the Windgate Pass Trail took a while. Steep, loose, and rocky is no way to spend most of your time hiking, especially downhill.

Heading uphill on Windgate I felt like I picked my pace up a bit. The first glance at Windgate Pass seemed so far away, but it didn't take long to get there and past. Foot traffic picked up on this trail.

Heading up on the East End Trail was fun. It was loose, but hiking that uphill seems to be easier than downhill. Saw only 5 or 6 other hikers on this trail. The one group was about 4 guys in their 20s who had a lot of questions about if they could hike a loop back to Tom's Thumb TH. I gave them directions and told them the mileage and AEG involved. They seemed undaunted, and had little water. The weather was cool enough for that not to be the issue it would normally be.

The hike down to the TH from the saddle was the most crowded, a true ant trail. Stopped frequently to let the uphill hikers by, and also allow trailrunners to pass. Most of the hikers I encountered all day had masks on they put up as we hiked. This section of the hike has significantly fewer of them. :-k Hiking downhill on this trail was much easier than I expected, again mainly due to how smooth the trail is. My knees hurt a bit, but that's a normal part of age. Overall, this hike didn't seem harder at all from what it was 11 years ago. :y:

I was looking for a hike close to home, and was wanting something different than going to the Lost Dog Wash TH; so I decided to head out to the Tom's Thumb TH. It has been a little over a year since I had been there, so I was overdue. I decided to do a Figure-8 loop that was a combination of the Hog Heaven Loop and a loop that utilized the Tom's Thumb/Windgate Pass/East End Trails. For good measure, I added an out-and-back hike to the Tom's Thumb Lookout.

I began the hike by doing the Hog Heaven Loop CW. This was my favorite part of the hike -- it was a steep and sometimes slippery climb up to the HangnailThumbnail Rock Formation. There was a fair amount of rock climbing and scrambling on this portion of the hike -- more than I remembered from previous times doing it. I then went over to East End -- the high point in the McDowells -- and hung out for a while. Then I descended down to the Tom's Thumb Trail, and did the Tom's Thumb-Windgate Pass-East End Loop CCW. The descent from the Tom's Thumb Trail down to the Windgate Pass Trail was my least favorite part of the hike -- it was fairly rocky and a bit steep, and did not offer much redeeming value imho. The trek up the East End Trail was as tough as ever!

The weather was good for this hike -- it was a tad cloudy in the morning but sunny in the afternoon. It was 38 degrees when I started a little after 9:00 AM, and was 49 when I got back to the TH.

Had a rare weekday off so I headed to Tom's Thumb Trailhead. I have hiked to Tom's Thumb many a time, but never from the North side. So that is what I did. 7:00 am parking lot not busy, I made my way up Tom's Thumb Trail a short distance until I reached the junction for the climber's trails. I continued West and made my way up the mountain; very scenic and quiet this way. Lots of cool rock formations and a cool ridgeline to walk on. You can see Tom's Thumb from a different perspective this way. I made a visit to the Ogre's Den (what's left of it) before visiting the Thumb. Finally, I visited The Lookout for a break and some views. Call me crazy, but I like The Lookout better than the Thumb. I finished the loop taking the regular trail back down. Much more crowded now. One day I will combine Lost Wall Loop and Hog Heaven to make the Ultimate Hog!

Denny and I assembled another Mötley Crüe of Freaks and Geeks for our annual Year End hike.

Chilly/Breezy morning, but the steady to climb to East End, warmed us up.

I'd never been up the Hog Heaven trail to East End Peak, so sampling this geology in the early morning light, was a treat. Little Dave signed us in up top and we took our obligatory group shot with glasses. We slipped our way down to the Toms Thumb Trail where John's 2 buddies split back to the TH. I'll be up here again.

We stopped at the emptied out Ogre's den before heading down East End. East End to the windy Windgate, back to the steady uphill climb up Toms Thumb. After a short side trip to the Outlook, it's all downhill to the TH

Another successful New Years Eve-ish hike in the books.

May you all have a Happy, Healthy, Hiking New Year!

Coldest desert hike I've been on in quite some time. Balaclava and windbreaker were a must the first few hours. Ron and Gene, my two college buddies, joined us for the Hog Heaven portion of the hike.

Hog heaven is a pretty cool route up to East End Peak. Not too brushy or hard to follow. After descending East End trail and heading over Windgate Pass, we saw some bow hunters at Inspiration point, then three deer five minutes later. The grind up Tom's Thumb trail was better than expected. Always pretty.

We finished up by heading out to Lookout Point then back down to the TH. Great hike. Thanks all. Happy New Year! :)

Another end of the year hike with Bruce and some of his posse. Lp even brought a couple college buddies. Cool they stay in touch. Dave never ages, Wally brings the best props, Joe’s bitter berry face is 🤣 Ray seems to be all healed up, Bruce did this on a sprained ankle. Great hike and company albeit a lot more than my norm. Ouch! Thanks gentlemen. Always enjoy these hikes!! Safety first. Happy New Year! You rock!

Denny and Bruce invited me along on their end of year hike. It was chilly and breezy for most of the hike, but the beautiful blue sky more than made up for the chill. This hike has it all: fun scrambles, lots of up and down, tremendous geology and variety, beautiful views with a few nice stretches where you can actually take advantage of the views.

This is not an easy hike. In fact, it kicked me sideways. It was a struggle to finish, but the scenery and company more than made up for it. I had an absolutely wonderful time.

Bruce and Denny, thank you again for the invitation. Dave, John, Joe and Wally, great to see you all again. Happy New Year!

Frank, Jamie and I went out to show Jamie Tom's Thumb. Nice short and easy morning. We ended up being bombarded by human people things at the Thumb so quickly moved on to the Lookout where we saw not a soul!
I recalled hiking part of Windgate trail once before. Frank voted we add on the extra 7 miles or whatnot.

So we did.
A lot of people ask me what a good grand canyon training hike is and after completing this loop I could easily suggest it. There is just enough downhill to simulate hiking a few miles down the main corridor trails and just enough plane noise to simulate hiking Hermit trail or the Tonto.

Once we left Lookout and headed down toward windgate I was instantly reminded of cutting down the switchbacks from clear Creek trail toward phantom. All that desert life and cool air and gorgeous rock.

For me, today, this hike was perfect. Not hard at all, not too much mileage and the elevation changes were enough to get me sweating and my heart pumping. I'd do it again for sure.

I definitely don't regret spending the winter back in the Valley.

Did not seen any fellow HAZzers either, though a guy did comment on the HAZ bumper sticker on my car.
