Enjoyed Bear Canyon last weekend. Decided to hike Bear Canyon this weekend. Dr. Speedyfeet reported nice conditions with plentiful water and colorful flowers a week ago and while it wasn't totally dry and dead, a week definitely makes a difference. The only water was in the main stem of Bear plus West Fork along with the lower stretch of East Fork. Spring weeds were sporadic, many looking like they had fried during the heat last week.

I hadn't done the loop since a Thimble trip ten years ago. While contemplating the option, I saw that 9L hadn't done it since 2014. At the time, @tough_boots made him do it, and there was some poking fun of the number of trails linked. I'm glad I was able to carry on that tradition today.

I've never been to Hutch's Pool so we made the quick out-n-back to check it out. It's a sweet spot, though I can imagine that solitude here is rare. Furthering my lifelong goal, covered some new ground on another segment of the AZT that I strive to never complete. Though this one might actually be worth it.

Parking lot was only half a dozen spots short of full at 8:30 as expected for a nice day in March. I haven't been here since the new creepy crawler started ops, and while there is apparently a half price option for downhill hikers, it doesn't seem to have the freeflowing get on-get off whenever you want thing that the old coal-fired tram had. Though we had no intention of hitching a ride today, it was noticeable that every seat was full, and nobody had any intention of moving. Ever.

Nice day mostly in the 60s with some sporadic cloud cover and an occasional fresh breeze. It got a little bit warmer on the downhill and eventually felt like summer at the bottom with sun temps well into the 90s. Avoided the bottom road with some new tracks along the creek and dam. Much better options than pavement.

I don't often peel off so many miles on a day hike, but I also don't often hike on pristine trails like these, which is weird because it was sorta enjoyable to have a nice groomed track for a change! Perhaps I should do that more lol.

Tons of fairyduster looking like it died this week. Small pockets of poppies higher up. Lots of Dichelostemma capitatum, and a spattering of other common seasonal weeds.

Not the best I've seen. For early March, it's tough to imagine it being less than this.

Wifey wanted to do Phoneline on a Saturday in “winter” which meant Sabino was a zoo and there was no parking except at the overflow. So we cut over to Phoneline Link and headed into the canyon, missing the first bit of Phoneline trail.

Passed one of my clients, which was fun.

Wifey’s bum foot was being a bum so we took the tram back. The driver kindly let us off at the connector for the overflow lot.

I’ll call this one the Trans-Catalina or the Tucson R2R. Similar stats. Weather was beautiful. Hutch’s pool was cooler than expected. Romero pools were a little less exciting than when we visited last year.

Would like to do it again when there is more water flowing.

We dropped a car at Catalina and then drove down to Sabino for the start. Saw a couple of road walkers and a biker over the short section of road before taking the Phoneline connector.

Passed 2 other people on the Phoneline then didn’t see another soul until Romero pools.

The trail was easy to follow throughout. Only one spot on the Romero side where we had to backtrack slightly to see that the trail took a high route up from a campsite near a seasonal waterfall (which has prompted folks to tramp out a defined path to its base that looks a lot like the official trail).

Speaking of campsites, lots of great spots along the trail. I marked several on my route.

Overall, a great way to experience the Catalinas.

Wifey went to Seven Falls yesterday and I just returned from a 31-mile jaunt in the Rincons, so our feet hurt. We both swore we wouldn’t do Sabino today. Yet there we were, doing stuff in Sabino… surely there is a medical diagnosis for this.

We did this loop on the recommendation of a park ranger. Wifey had tried it weeks ago and got lost (lousy signage and too many social trails), but we figured it out this time. It’s a nice route to see a lot of what lower Sabino has to offer.

Hiked with wifey up Phoneline close to sunset, then headed down Phoneline Link as it started to get dark. We crossed Sabino Creek with headlamps, which was a challenging rock-hop. We walked the road back in the dark under about 3/4 of a moon. Splendid short jaunt.

Evening hike starting at overflow parking lot, over to Sabino Road, and onto Bluff Trail. Surprise! Sabino Creek was flowing again from the big storm the day before. Exciting. Got my boots wet while crossing the creek and then went up canyon and up Phoneline Link to the top. Back down the same route to the big pool crossing, which was uncrossable without wading. Went a little further and did a long-leg jump over the creek to get back to the road. Nice hike, great clouds, and so nice to see the creek flowing again.

Sunset/night hike from Sabino up Phoneline, down Phoneline Link, and back past Sabino Dam. Heard great horned owls as usual, but also heard a western screech owl (not the usual).
