Kelly and I got out to hike on some trails we hadn't been on in years. Trails are smooth and in great shape. Nice weather. Only saw a dozen or so others out hiking and a handful of mountain bikers.
Coffee and breakfast after. Thanks Kelly. :)

Joined an educational Meetup. Going over geology of the Marcus Landslide area and surrounding mountains. Slow, measured approach for first 2 miles. I then veered off on my own and picked up the pace.

I planned a loop in advance. The hike out was a bit on the easy side. When I began the loop back, I found this trail to be difficult to distinguish from the wash. Plus the terrain bogged me down.

As I became frustrated, I found a jct. Upon checking, I realized this was a way out without going a whole lot out of my way. Happily diverted from my plan. Loop was more enjoyable from that point. Saw mtn bikers here and there but hardly any hikers.

I had plans for early in the evening, so I had to pick something closer to home. Hadn't been out to Marcus Landslide in a while.

Took the long way out from McDowell Mountain Park and the Pemberton Trail, the took the Tonto Tank Trail back. Chilly at the start, then pleasantly cool from the cloud cover. Very green everywhere.

It's been over 10 years I think since I did this trail, I don't remember all the spur trails on the loop to the interpretive points. Submarine Rock was interesting. Spooky to stand under it next to the other rock keeping it from crushing you.

Didn't see any wildlife, lots of bikes along the way and most hikers out by the landslide. Made pretty good time even with spending some extra time out there checking things out.

My route: I started at Tom's Thumb trailhead and took Tom's Thumb trail up to Tom's Thumb. From there, I back tracked to the East End trail and followed it down to the Windmill trail. I took Windmill trail to Coachwhip Trail, then to Pemberton Trail. Pemberton trail to Boulder Trail, to Marcus Landslide trail, and back to Tom's Thumb trailhead.

The day was really nice, temperatures were comfortable and there was a slight breeze. People weren't much of a problem. There were several on the way up to Tom's Thumb and on my way down from Tom's Thumb to the East End trail. After that, I saw only a handful of people until I was finishing up on the Marcus Landslide trail.

Tom's Thumb trail is more like a path for most of it. It's all decomposed granite and is wider and smoothed. I actually wished it was rougher as it was too groomed for my taste.

Going down East End trail was interesting as the tread changed composition at least three times. It started with the decomposed granite, switched to some other type of rock, then sandstone. I don't pretend to be a geologist, so that's the depth of my take.

Once on the Windmill trail, things were fairly level and fast when the tread was good. Even when the tread wasn't as good, it was still fairly easy to keep walking with purpose.

There is a ramada and picnic table at the Coachwhip / Pemberton junction. I stopped there and had a Gatorade. There's a bike stand, and tools for cyclists. There're also some prayer flags and plaques with interesting verse in the ramada. It was a good place to stop for a few minutes.

The Marcus Landslide trail is an interpretive trail and is smooth and wide like the Tom's Thumb trail. By then I was hungry and just wanted to finish so I mostly just cruised by the signs.

Wanted to hike in a different area. I originally put together the Tom's Thumb Loop from Tom's Thumb TH but realized that's not something I want to do anymore by myself. So I put together this eastern loop that was a little easier. The last two times I was on the Tom's Thumb Trail was in 2014, once for johnr1 Memorial Hike and the other with my niece and Kelly to bag East End Peak.

Believe it or not, it was ten years ago :o the last time I was on the East End Trail and believe it or not, the trail tread still sucks... I forgot how bad. I'm still surprised I even did the 13 mile Loop [ photoset ] but then again, I was ten years younger! Got some nice photos back then including lizards and the first time we had our office owls.

I'm still trying to enjoy afternoon hiking so I had a big lunch and then headed to the TH. (FYI: The road into it is torn up in various places.) Starting the hike on Tom's Thumb Trail, the tread is pretty nice the entire way up to the top and over to the East End. I knew it was UP a lot and there were lots of various hikers coming and going. It's one of those where you see all sizes of hikers and I found myself saying if they can get up this elevation, I certainly can  . It has one false summit and I vaguely remembered it. There were still lots of people going both directions as I topped out and headed over to East End Trail. I did see some poppies.

East End Trail, yuk. There is no need to do this one again. For some reason, I thot with all the new hiker traffic maybe they did something about the condition of that trail. Granted, it's not easy to work with so I guess it could be much worse. For the most part you have to pay attention the entire mile and a half down. The views, though, are really great. As I got toward the bottom I encountered a fitness hiker on her way up and wished her luck. Two others passed me coming down and they seemed quite light on their feet. I was very happy to get to the junction and glad that I chose the route I had vs going around the west side.

So east onto the Windmill Trail, which I also had last been on in 2014 going the opposite way. It was a little rocky but not to the level I had just come down. I had forgotten about the dilapidated windmill which doesn't show up in my 2014 photoset [ photoset ] , altho I got a way cool pic of a squirrel and a great fountain picture too. Near the old windmill is a pretty large tree. As I came out of a little valley I saw the fountain was spurting so I did some serious zooming to check it out. It just looks so out of place to see it from here in the desert.

Before hooking up with the Coachwhip Trail there is a bench and a biker was sitting there. I needed to re-tie my shoes tighter so I sat next to him. He is a 5 year retired Southwest pilot and graduate of the Air Force Academy. I told him about Wade, who is also a retired SW pilot. We talked about life in retirement and he said he was forced out as he turned 60 and Southwest required retirement at that age. He loved his job. Anyway, it was nice to visit with him but I told him I was a slow hiker and had to make sure I could get back before they closed the lot. It had taken me longer to get down East End so for about a half hour, I contemplated what I would do if I didn't make it out in time.

The Coachwhip Trail was very nice and now I started hiking to the northeast. The views were great with the glowing golden grasses and I would see a little more flora like Blue Dycks and Fairy Duster and some Rattlesnake Weed. Of course, the views toward the Mazzies and Four Peaks are enjoyable as well as looking back on the mountains to my west. I would also see a lot of flowering Wolfberry too.

As I neared the Pemberton Trail I saw a very nice Ramada and if it had been a little earlier, I might have stopped for a little rest; but since I was in unfamiliar area I pushed onward. The Pemberton Trail was smooth as glass as we headed mostly west now. The desert flora was lovely with an occasional splash of boulders. Next intersection would be with the Boulder Trail which was more of the same. I did encounter a couple bike riders, one coming, one going. I saw about 1/2 dozen rabbits between here and the TH.

I enjoyed this desert scenery with the golden grass, though trying to work with the sun was problematic at times. However, I nailed a shot. I did take quite a few photos. I noticed that my phone really didn't do well on a couple normal shots; not sure what I did wrong so that was disappointing. Anyway, you eventually hook up with Marcus Landslide which took me in and out of shade a few times so I ended up lowering my sleeves. This is a wonderful trail of course, and with the sun falling behind the mountain, I got some great light to work with.

I was getting pretty tired by this time so was glad of the fabulous trail tread as I hiked the miniature rollercoaster trail back to the TH. I saw about 1/2 dozen more hikers and that was it. I saw about four lizards but that was mostly up on the Tom's Thumb/East End Trails.

I had plenty of time to spare so I don't know why I freaked out a little over on the East End that I might not get done in time. I was making all sorts of plans in case that happened, ha! I really enjoyed my Huckleberry Lager as I was pretty thirsty. Wish that East End Trail wasn't such a pain as I'd do the Loop again. Been sneezing a lot since I got home as I got a little chilled; I know, hard to believe. Altho, having a Mountain Dew Freeze probably didn't help that... PS I think it turned into a head (nose) cold.

Marcus Landslide Trail is only 4.0 miles, 600 ft. accumulated elevation gain (AEG), out & back, from the Tom’s Thumb trailhead. To justify the hour-long drive to north Scottsdale, I planned to also hike the Rock Knob Trail, part of the Pemberton Trail, and the Boulder Trail, for an extra 2½ miles.

There were quite a few cars at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, but foot traffic was pleasantly light all day. Maybe because it was Christmas week. 🎄🎅🏻

Wide & smooth, Rock Knob Trail would be fun to blast down on a mountain bike. Rock Knob is a small hill festooned with boulders and surrounded by plenty of cholla.

Until today, I’d never been on Pemberton Trail, but my impression is it is similar in length, and relative ease, to the Butterfield-Pedersen-Coldwater Loop in the Estrella Mountains. I hiked on south Pemberton Trail for only 1¼ miles, 150 ft. downhill. The first ¼ mile was rocky, but not a problem for hiking.

Boulder Trail climbs 260 ft. in a hair over a mile, to Marcus Landslide Trail. The vegetation was scrubbier than on Pemberton Trail, with at least one acacia providing shade, in an otherwise mostly exposed loop. The slidemass -- explained at [ photo ] -- was visible as a long 30 ft. high mound to my left.

I was hoping there was a bench on Boulder Trail, so I could stop for a snack & water swap, but no such luck. I settled for plopping down on the ground. I was thirstier than would be expected for the moderate temperature. Humidity must have been low, despite the looming storm.

I actually took the time to read all the interpretive signs I encountered, including at the junction of Boulder Trail and Marcus Landslide Trail. Right is back to Tom’s Thumb Trailhead; left is the Marcus Landslide Loop. Don’t skip it! The loop is the highlight of this hike.

There’s a large boulder on the left, about halfway up the Marcus Landslide Loop. But it was a mere pebble to Submarine Rock, at the “far” end of the loop. There’s a number of Interpretive Points, which are 50 yd. diversions of the main loop. The first of these gave a good downslope view of the slidemass, which flowed a mile east.

After marvelling at the shear size of Submarine Rock, I stopped for a second break. I could see Weavers Needle, Four Peaks, Mount Ord and, closer by, Granite Mountain and Brown’s Mountain. I sure could have used more substantial hiking food than gorp. At least a murderwich from the Stop’n’Rob. ⛽️🥪

After enjoying Marcus Landslide Loop, I booked it back to the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, only briefly pausing to check out a few more mushroom rocks, including Fallen Mushroom. (Where the top-heavy shroomy part finally separated from its base.) Merry Christmas & Happy New Year’s!

A 6:30 start in the 80's and humid. Hog Heaven is an enjoyable trail with some good views of the surrounding area. I'd forgotten how steep it gets with some Class 2. I took a few breaks on the way up and was lucky to have some cloud cover and a breeze most of the way up. Heading down to the Toms Thumb trail, the trail gets a bit steep and slippery in spots.

Headed down East End, I passed up my first couple hikers of the day. Making the turn on Windmill and the Coachwhip, it started heating up. At the intersection of Coachwhip and Pemberton, there has been a shelter w/ table added since the last time I was through here. It's complete with all the tools a MTB'er would need including an air pump. It's also set up with solar Christmas lights.

On Pemberton, I passed my only MTB'er on the day. With a mile to go, no breeze and no clouds, I was ready for it to be over

Hiking in McDowell Sonoran Preserve on the weekend? Risky. Might run into lots of folks.
Decided to take a chance, figured we may be able to avoid crowds by doing a hike that doesn't go up the mountains, and the fact that we start break of dawn. For the most part this worked out pretty well, we didn't run into anyone on the trail until we were well on our way back.

We had hiked the Romero Canyon a couple of days prior going up to Romero pass, this was a grueling hike, so I thought a relatively flat short hike would be in order. Combined [Marcus Landslide] along with a section of [Pemberton] and section of [Rock Knob] and [Boulder] to make a 6.7 mile loop trail. GPS route has been uploaded if you want to check it out.

This was actually a really nice hike. A nice casual hike with some really good views. Great sunrise, this time of year is great for that with the common clouds (Terrible for Astronomy). I don't think I would do this hike in the summer, it's completely exposed.

Bob, Mike, Nick, Marilyn, Nora, Sara, and Kelly joined me for a 10+ mile loop in the McDowells. We hiked: Marcus Landslide, Boulder, Pemberton, Coachwhip, Windmill, East End, and Tom’s Thumb trails.

It was a cool and cloudy day, very pleasant for hiking. Recent rain has made things even greener with abundant flowers. Trails were in good condition too.

Ben, Marilyn, Mike, Bob, and Cathy joined me for a twelve and a half mile hike that took us all the way out to Marcus Landslide (starting from the Trailhead Staging Area).

Some of us saw javelina (and ravens) on our drive into the park. Later, during the hike, we saw jackrabbits, coyotes, deer, and more ravens.

We saw lots of flowers too. The poppies are especially thick in the Marcus Landslide area. The closer we got to this trail, the more poppies we saw. We saw brittlebush, lupine, fiddleneck, and owl clover too. The brittlebush seems to be drying up somewhat, whereas the fiddlenecks are just starting to emerge.

Lloyd joined me for Friday's hike in the McDowells. He told me up front that he's 70 years old with a pacemaker. However, he's been doing some serious hiking recently and was ready for a hard hike.

We did a big loop starting with part of the Lost Wall Loop. Once we got to Tom's Thumb Trail, we headed down and then down some more on the East End Trail. Part way down EE, another hiker named Danny joined us. When we got to Windmill, we turned left and then left again on Coachwhip. Now in MMRP, we turned left again on Pemberton and then again on Boulder, which brought us back to the Preserve. Danny headed back to the parking lot while Lloyd and I went on to do the loop on the Marcus Landslide Trail - Lloyd told me that it'd be too short of a hike if we headed straight back at that point. Once we finished the loop, we did head back. I offered to extend the hike to 12 miles which was what Lloyd was shooting for, but he admitted that he was starting to get tired as we made our way back.

We saw many other hikers on our way. While in MMRP, we saw a few mountain bikers too.

We saw lots of flowers, especially brittlebush and poppies.

The trails were all in good condition, though Danny felt that the East End Trail was a bit loose.

A nice loop hike on relatively well maintained trails out of the Toms Thumb trailhead. It was a Saturday so the main parking lot was full and the overflow lots were about 2/3 full. Lots of people to chat with on the steep ascent up the Tom's Thumb trail and most were passing me even though I was setting a fairly good pace (for me). A young women was charging up the trail with her male friend lagging behind. I told her "You're kicking his pumpkin" as she passed by. Need to learn to keep my mouth shut but it turned out OK. She just smiled while he blurted out an excuse "We don't have hills in Texas". The crowd thinned out once I started down the East End Trail and only saw a few hikers and several mountain bikers until getting to the Marcus Landslide trail.

Laura joined me for a Friday morning (into afternoon) hike in the McDowells.

Starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we started on Tom's Thumb Trail and then took the first climber's access trail to the right. This took us to the ridge on which the Thumb is situated and took us past this prominence. (This is part of the Lost Wall Loop.) When we reached Tom's Thumb Trail again, we turned left and then right onto the East End Trail where we descended until the end of the trail intersecting the Windmill Trail. We continued left on Windmill, then left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, and right on Marcus Landslide. When we got to the intersection with Feldspar, I bid goodbye to Laura and continued on Feldspar and then back on Tom's Thumb. (Tacking on Feldspar at the end of this loop adds perhaps an extra mile of distance.)

When I had last hiked the climber's access trail for the Lost Wall Loop, I got lost midway along. That didn't happen today - I figured out where I went wrong last time and did not repeat that mistake.

The trails were all somewhat damp after last night's rain, but that seemed to improve things somewhat - they didn't feel quite as loose as they normally do.

I saw some evidence of recent erosion on a few trails - in one spot on Tom's Thumb Trail, I saw some exposed wire mesh used to reinforce the trail. East End was somewhat loose and eroded, but I sort of like it that way. It didn't seem much worse (or better) than the last time I did it.

We saw some poppies, brittlebush, and chuparosa along the way. I think I got a photo of a bee on some brittlebush.

Ben, Marilyn, Nora, and Kay joined me for a hike of most of the Hog Heaven Loop. We visited the East End Peak and continued back to Tom's Thumb Trail. At that junction, the rest of the group finished the Hog Heaven Loop by returning to the trailhead via Tom's Thumb Trail. I added on a few more miles... Down East End, left on Windmill, left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, right on Marcus landslide, right on Caballo, which brought me back to the trailhead.

I had mentioned that I had a hard time finding the trail in a few spots on my hike of the Lost Wall Loop a few weeks ago. This wasn't a problem on the Hog Heaven Loop, though it is easy to get off route if you're not paying attention. I found the route finding to be easier than normal on this hike.

Recent rains seem to have firmed up the climber's access trails which make up the Hog Heaven Loop. It seemed less treacherous than normal.

I had been up the East End Trail two weeks ago. The descent seemed looser than expected, but then that aspect of things is often easier when going uphill.

The rest of the trails were in good condition. I noticed a couple of (recently made) bypasses around some erosion on Marcus Landslide.

After crossing over to MMRP, I noticed a bunch of pink ribbons attached to vegetation with clothespins. I think these mark the route for the upcoming horse event in MMRP - Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way.

Linda and I did a 10+ mile loop for our Friday morning hike.

Starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we hiked Marcus Landslide, turned left onto Boulder, which took us into MMRP. Following Boulder to its eastern end, we then turned right onto Pemberton and right again onto Coachwhip. The Windmill Trail took us back into MSP where we turned right onto the East End Trail. It had gotten warm and it was slow going up the East End Trail, but we eventually got to Tom's Thumb Trail. Once there, we turned left to see if we could see the remains of a deer that had been killed, possibly by a mountain lion, earlier in the week. Linda knew approximately where it should have been, but we didn't see anything aside from a bit of fur. We weren't really sure whether that was part of the kill or not. We returned to the parking lot via Tom's Thumb Trail.

We considered going onto Tom's Thumb, the pinnacle, and then possibly down the Lost Wall Loop, but we decided against it since Linda was running low on water. I had finished my first reservoir while coming up East End and was, by then, partway through my second.

We saw a rattlesnake along the way - it was angry about being disturbed. We also saw some caterpillars digging holes. We spotted several lizards; one posed for me - I think I may have gotten a good photo. We also saw a number of flowers including Datura, Arizona Poppy, and one which Linda told me was Devil's Claw.

Linda and I hiked an extended version of the Lost Wall Loop.

Starting from Tom's Thumb TH, we hiked Tom's Thumb to the first climber's access trail to the right, starting the Lost Wall Loop. We hiked this trail up to the ridge and then past Tom's Thumb which eventually took us back to the Tom's Thumb Trail.

Instead of returning to the parking lot via Tom's Thumb Trail, we instead went down East End, left on Windmill, left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, and right on Marcus Landslide.

We saw Anika, a very fit trail runner who I've encountered several times in the past, as she was coming up the East End Trail. We chatted for a few minutes. She had a 22 mile run planned for the day! I'm amazed that she can do it with just a single water bottle tucked into the waistband of her running shorts.

As usual, trail conditions in this area are very good, though of course everything is really dry. The dry conditions caused both of us to slip a few times as we descended the East End Trail.

Linda and Marlee joined me for a nearly 11 mile loop in the McDowells.

Starting at Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we hiked up Tom's Thumb Trail, went down East End, continued east one Windmill and then Coachwhip, turned left onto Pemberton, and left again on Boulder. When we hit the Marcus Landslide Trail, we turned left to do the interpretive loop before heading back to the trailhead.

We saw a number of other trail users on Tom's Thumb and Marcus Landslide, but not many on the other trails.

No snakes today, but we did see a number of bunnies. We also saw a deer as we were starting out.

On Friday, Jan 19, I led a group of seven (counting myself) on a hike of the Hog Heaven Loop in the McDowells. Starting at the Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we hiked a very short ways on Tom's Thumb Trail, turned left onto Mesquite Canyon, and then left again on Feldspar. We then turned onto the climber's access trail that goes through Mesquite Canyon. We followed this to and then past Hog Heaven and continued up to the Thumbnail Pinnacle. We continued on along the ridge leading to the East End (peak); several of us summitted there. We returned to the Tom's Thumb Trail via yet another climber's access trail.

When we got back to the parking area, after saying our goodbyes, I headed out on Marcus Landslide, turned left onto Boulder, left onto Pemberton, and left onto Rock Knob. I then hiked Marcus Landslide until I got to the side trail leading to the prominent mushroom boulders near the Sven Slab climbing area. The trail continues on - sort of. I ended up hiking past the Energizer / Hawk boulder that I used to climb in my younger days. I followed the Sven Slab climber's access trail back to Marcus Landslide, turned left onto Feldspar, and then left again onto Tom's Thumb where I hiked up a short ways in order to reach my distance goal for the day.

It was a great day - the highlight of the day was the Hog Heaven Loop. It's a really fun loop with awesome views along the way. Route finding went really well too - but, of course, I've done it a bunch of times.
