Posted a lengthy outing on President's Day to Meetup. Surprised by the strong response. 10 am at TH. A diverse and interesting group.

Went smoothly except for 1 trail which was part of the route was now decommissioned. Had to improvise. So we went to Cathedral Rock and followed a couple other trails till we were back on the planned loop.

Still managed to finish with the AEG & mileage I'd provided in the write up. All seemed pleased by the end.

Kelly wanted to get away from Papago, so after a short stint at work we were off to the Brown's Ranch area. Temps were chilly and windy with a bit of rain and hail/graupel. When the sun came out it felt rather nice. Saw six other hikers and a couple mountain bikers.
Good to get back out this way. Thanks Kelly. :)

Beautiful morning for a hike. Quite a few hikers out close to the TH, but, as always, the numbers petered out a few miles away. All I'd see was MTB'ers after that. The overcast skies kept things comfortable.

Amazingly quiet for a Saturday in super bloom wildflower season. If you get to summit via Upper Ranch and Wrangler - that’s the quiet way. No poppies. Lots of brittle bush. Smattering of lupine and globemallow and fairy sister. Rare pink blooms on hedgehog cactus. Jogged a little on the way back to car. Wore a new hat that is a little bit old lady but keeps sun off and frankly I am a little bit of an old lady 😂. Turned 50 last week. Happy to have neck, back, knees in good shape and after changing my eating habits I’m back to my high school weight - so can’t complain. Grateful for a spring morning of solitude. Back to Mom shuttle duties soon.

... still catching up from my wildflower hikes:
Well I'm still on my wildflower hunt so I thought I would try the McDowell Sonoran Preserve plus I've been wanting to get out here for a few weeks now, and on a weekday.  The temps were supposed to be warmer today, but with a slightly filtered sun, it should be just right.  I decided on the Cone/Brown clockwise loop.  At the trailhead, I talked of my route to the docent who asked, he warned me of a rattlesnake on the Wrangler.

I could tell right away that wildflowers were not showing yet and that was fine; it should mean less filming/picture taking and more hiking.  What was I thinking?  After all, this is a lush part of the Sonoran Desert and out here, it was big and there were boulders scattered about as well.  I ran into quite a few hikers on the Upper Ranch Trail in the first mile.  One seemed relieved they were only 1/2 mile from the TH.  The sky was pretty for most of the hike and the filtered sun made for some nice picture taking and movies :D

This Preserve is well-signed but not perfectly as I missed my turn on the Cone Mountain Loop Trail and when I realized I was headed on the northeast side of Cone Mountain, I backtracked to the intersection with the Wrangler Trail.  The trail swings pretty wide as it traverses the lower regions below Cone Mountain on the south side.  There were dots of poppies but lots of Wiry Lotus.  You start seeing more boulders closer to the trail as you get toward the southwest side.

As I rounded the west side the clouds seemed to join together to create a slight overcast.  There was a bit of a breeze and I was surprised that it had a cold feel which was rather nice; at least now.  I went through one section with lots of tall Desert Lavender and there were even a couple blooms.  The little valleys you pass through would have bigger patches of poppies.  The other thing I would start seeing more of was the Soap and Banana Yucca plants; especially once I headed north on Cloudburst Trail where I should have headed west on Cone Mountain Trail to catch the trail below Brown's.  I didn't even think to check RS and my "pin to track" must not have been on to notify me.  As I kept going north, but then west, and zigzagging, I still thought I was going the right way; especially when I reached the Hawknest Trail and finally started heading east.

The Loop doesn't list the individual trails so I'll have to keep that in mind when I do these loops out here.  Fortunately, it was fabulous terrain and I was entertained by the desert flora and saguaros.  I kept thinking maybe I had been out this way before and looking back, last year I was on the Hawknest Trail but from the south to Cloudburst and along the west and south side of Cone back to Pima/Dynamite TH.  This part of the Hawknest I had not been on.  It had a few cool little valleys that Mother Nature did a very nice job of decorating.  I really enjoyed those.

I was glad to be going east but then I got concerned with how far east was I going?  Eventually I came to another intersection with the Basalt Ridge Trail which would take me south to where I wanted to be.  This was also a nice little section of trail.  Off to the southeast I could see this long patch of green so I tried to zoom and get pictures as it really stood out; looked like it had been manicured even.  The summit looked so small from here as I continued.

And then I finally arrived at where I should have been a few miles ago, the Upper Ranch Trail and Brown's Mountain Trail.  And, believe it or not, I had gotten slightly chilly the last mile or so.  Up I went observing the trail had been beaten up pretty bad from people using it when it was wet or slightly so.  There are a couple bedrock areas to walk over which is something I like.  It's not a tough hike up and there are a couple flatter places where you can catch your breath, or in my case, take pictures of the distant views which were showing up very distinctly.  It's when you take pictures of those mountains/mesas that you realize what a huge valley :o we live in and we're lucky to have a few mountains in the valley to climb up.

I debated whether I would do the short trail to the summit but since the wind had let up a little and it's a short hike I headed on up Brown's Summit Trail.  A family had gone up before me like they were goats.  I was glad I summited as the views with this light and our.... you guessed it, green desert floor, the area was beautiful :app: .  Those distant views to the Superstitions and layered looks to the west were even more pronounced now it seemed.  And because of that light, the Four Peaks with their remaining snow were photographing beautifully as well.  I actually sat down, had a mini Kind bar, and responded to a text from my brother.  The sun came out for a bit and warmed me up too.  But it was getting late so I headed back down.  I did slip and fall on the loose rock but no big deal.  However, I will note, the trail down to the saddle may be short, but it is slick.  Gosh, the last time I was up there was 2014 so I was due.

And now for the last 1 1/2 miles on the rest of the Brown's Mountain Trail back to the TH.  There were still people coming up, the Park closes at 6:25 and it was around 5 now.  The trail zig zags down so it makes for changing views and still not much in the way of wildflowers, but there was plenty of other interesting desert flora that we don't get to see as much of over on the Phoenix Preserves. The limited sun was trying to light up Cholla and Granite Mountains. The sky colors were somewhat muddy but I was still able to frame up some tall Soaptree Yucca.

And now to enjoy my huckleberry beer after another successful hike, even though I actually get a little more tired when I do all that filming as it takes longer.

Once again, I took a lot of movies but wow, what a beautiful day and great filming conditions :) .  The light really made the distant areas show off and of course, still snow on the mountains.  The views from the summit were outstanding in this light, trust me:

Early morning start at 6:30am from Brown's Ranch TH in Scottsdale. Started on the main Brown's Ranch Road Trail through the desert to the summit spur trail. Took about 40-45 minutes to reach the summit on Brown's Mt. Last 0.2 mile is uphill and scrambly in spots but nothing horrible. Great views all around from the summit. Saw a few hikers and mountain bikers after I started but that thinned out once I got off the main trail. Only two couples on the spur summit trail.

From there I headed back to Powerline Road #2 and east to the 118th St. trail. South to Latigo Trail and back to the TH. No one on the powerline road, a scattered few on Latigo.

Took a brief break at the TH and then went out to part of the Cone Mountain Trail. Saw plenty of lizards and a roadrunner. A few cactus, creosote and palo verde in bloom. No other exciting critters.

After returning from Easter in Maryland, bougainvillea were doing great in our neighborhood, so I decided to take a crack at another local flower hunt.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead was about half full when I started hiking at 8:45 a.m. Just gazing out at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, I did not see any flowers, so my hopes were not high.

I headed out on Upper Ranch Trail. After a ⅓ of a mile, Upper Ranch Trail passes under power lines. That is when I started finding some small flowers here and there. The strawberry hedgehog mostly had flowers, but they were smaller, and not fully open. The ocotillo were outstanding. 👍

It was interesting to watch Brown’s Mountain change shape throughout the day, as I rotated around it.

Corral Trail has some nice views north to Cave Creek, but also travels through some lower areas, so there was more grass & shrubbery along it, particularly acacia, which as bright green as I’ve ever seen them. The creosote were still blooming. 🌿

There is little shade anywhere in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, so I took advantage of what I could find for brief break in a wash at the east end of Teddy Bear Ridge.

In the Brown’s Ranch area I found collapsed barbwire fence, an old feed hopper, a sunken foundation, a dry cinder block cattle tank, two dry cement spring boxes, and some other odds & ends. I somehow missed the ranch house remains, which are on the west side of Brown’s Ranch Road.

Just after I turned onto Brown's Ranch Road for the second time, I got rattled for my first time this year, by a small, but very angry, western diamondback. Thankfully, we were on opposite sides of the road, about 10 ft. apart. I didn’t get closer, but when I crouched down to take a photo he quickly slithered along his side of the road in my direction. That got my attention! 😳

After the snake and I parted ways, I finally started to encounter mountain bikers and other hikers.

I found the best strawberry hedgehog of my hike on the way up Brown's Mountain Trail.

Brown’s Summit Spur is short, but steep — 180 AEG in only 250 yds. — and slippery with pea gravel over rock. The summit is larger than it looks from below, with plenty of good sitting rocks. Being free standing, Brown’s Mountain has 360° views. Four Peaks was obvious to the east, but the only mountains I took time to identify were to the south: East End Mountain, Tom’s Thumb, Troon Mountain and Pinnacle Peak.

After photos and a snack break, I headed carefully down the summit spur to the saddle, then continued south on Brown’s Mountain Trail. As turned right onto Brown’s Ranch Road for the third time, I was sideswiped by a mountain biker blasting along the road. Not a technical track: A flat road. What a hero. 🙄

After I finished my hike, I was going to stop at Mickey D’s for my traditional post hike lunch: Filet-O-Fish and large fries (extra salt), but I realized I was totally cashless, having donated my last $3 to the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, who maintain the park. I call that a win. 😇

Some of the best ocotillo I've ever seen. Many blooming strawberry hedgehog with smaller, not quite as open flowers. Creosote still doing well. Brittlebush flowers withering. Two clusters of desert wishbone bush. Scattered, not very fluffy, desert marigold. One miniature woollystar cluster. Flat top buckwheat have small clusters. A few small desert globemallow. A single New Mexico thistle. One cluster of pink / violet six-petal flower I could not identify.

Met Angela at Brown's Ranch TH at 0830 and we got started. Not as cool as I'd hoped it would be, but a nice breeze. Headed up Upper Ranch, then left on Cone Mountain Trail. Headed offtrail up to the summit of Cone Mountain. Short and steep offtrail. Some loose rocks and slippery decomposed granite, but we managed to stay upright. We spent some time dodging vegetation as well. Views from the top were nice, and surprisingly, no breeze up there.

Once back on the trail, we continued around Cone Mtn, then headed up Brown's Mountain Trail. Angela waited for me at the start of the spur trail to the summit. I went up there real quick, took a few pictures, then headed back down. Nobody else at the summit. From there, we backtracked west and then took Corral Trail east, then Dry Gulch over to Cholla Mtn Loop trail. Lots of nice yucca along these sections of trail.

It was warming up by the time we reached the Amphitheater, so we sat in the shade there while we ate lunch. From there, we headed south on Watershed, then west on Chuckwagon back to the trailhead. Probably the highest concentrations of cactus of the day along those two trails. Along Chuckwagon, we saw 5-6 hawks that circled around us but didn't seem to want to leave the area. The settled in trees and saguaros along the trail and watched us as we took pictures of them. Neat to see.

Nice day, great conversation, and enjoyable to get some easy miles in while hiking through picturesque scenery.

Got my hair done and decided to do a hike over in North Scottsdale since my appt was up in the area. The last two times I hiked out of Brown's TH was Dec 7, 2014 and Dec 16, 2013 so it seemed a good time to finally revisit. Plus Linda and I are supposed to hike in this area on Tue so I wanted to make sure she could handle the peak😏. I also decided to try out my new shoes.

I was astonished as to how cold it is at 60 degrees with a breeze when I got out of Tonto the Third. I actually had to wear my down vest for the hike. This trail system is like the interstate highway (as to its smoothness) except for the climb up to the Summit. On this part of the hike is where I saw the only hikers I would see for the day; about ten. For the next 6 3/4 miles I would not see another hiker; altho I saw over a dozen bike riders throughout off and on.

After coming down from the summit I rounded the mountain to the north side before switching back east to hook up with the Corral Trail. The Corral Trail makes a wide swing to the west and north before heading east and south to hook up with the Dry Gulch Trail. It was really quite beautiful and I ended up taking more photos than I thot. It was such a nice change after my visit to the Superstitions on Tuesday. I was surprised to see so many Soap Tree Yuccas and I do like the gold colored grass. And of course, there are a few tall hillsides and of course the rather large Cholla Mountain. I did see a couple squirrels on my route.

The air was very clear so had good views for most of the afternoon. I took the short Dry Gulch Trail connector to hook up with the Cholla Mtn Loop. I did see a few hikers at a distance up at the Cathedral Rock area. My goal at this point was the Ampie (that's what HAZel called it) Theatre area. It's still a pretty cool place to walk around but the rocks are not very comfortable to sit on so I just re-tied my new shoe. From here it was on to the Watershed Trail which turned out to be quite scenic with all the desert-type flora. It was thick through here. I eventually crossed under the powerlines and then got on the Chuckwagon Trail heading west for the last 1 and 1/2 miles. I was walking into the sun and the breeze seemed to have died down now.

I encountered a few more bike riders and finally arrived back at Tonto III to have our first beer and snack together. Pretty fancy cars at this Trailhead for sure. A flock of fluffy quail walked across the lot; they were cold too. And now for the drive home as it was getting dark.
A nice article about the ranch: https://equitrekking.com/articles/entry ... in-arizona

With friends in town from St. Louis we needed a quick hike to fit into their busy schedule. Brown's Mountain seemed to fill the bill as it is short but gives one an excellent 360 degree panoramic view of the valley from the summit.

Like most trailheads in the MSP the Brown's Ranch TH is modern, clean, well staffed, and the bathrooms don't stink.
And oh yeah, busy...even on a weekday. We arrived early to a half full parking lot but not a lot of people around. We headed out on Brown's Ranch Road and hit a traffic jam of folks in short order. I think most were doing flat loop hikes because as soon as we veered off onto the Mountain Trail we had the place to ourselves. We ran into a couple of groups on the way up and a few more coming down from the summit.

Surprised to still see snow on the Mazzies and on a few distant peaks that I don't know the name of. Wildflower sightings were grim at best. No poppies and no Brittlebush. Saw some Lupine and a couple of clumps of Owl Clover. That was it! Tons of Globe Chamomile of course but that stuff is everywhere right now.

Good views from the top as expected but on the way down I got a great view of the sky as I took my first slip and fall in recent memory. One minute I was thinking to myself how nice and sticky the footing was and then my feet went right out from under me with no warning. I was even using a trekking pole at the time! Luckily my back and head broke my fall. :D No pain so far, but waiting to see how I feel tomorrow morning. :scared:

Returning down to the TH and parking lot we saw the place had really filled up. Lots of cars circling around looking for parking spots. This whole hiking thing is starting to catch on I think.

Nice hike with the kids. Started on Upper Ranch, Brown’s Mtn, then finished on the road. With the clouds, it was a little cooler than anticipated, but the kids like cold weather. We had the summit to ourselves almost the entire time we were up there. Lots of people heading up while we were on our way down though.

Boyfriend’s house is close to Brown’s Ranch TH. Got up early and was only person on summit trail up and down until last 0.1 mike when I saw two ladies. Summer temps scaring people away I suppose. Insanely humid and plenty of bugs at the top. But beautiful views and awesome solitude with decent workout. Jogged last little stretch.
Ran into a pack of bike steward friends at TH— asked about the very bad idea of closing two of the non gated TH in the Preserve. Infuriating that City employee individual has power to close access to a tax payer funded 31,000 acre preserve with massive boundary lines that can’t be “controlled” and unwieldy mega-trailheads that make you feel like a sheep going through a turnstall when you start your hike ...... City should be opening more access points not closing little ones that allow users to enter the Presrrve in a peaceful way if they have good timing for small parking lot. How many times I have taken my children to the two parking lots they want to close — to do mini hikes — how much conflict is there at megaTH with share the trail issues — why create more bottleneck through fewer places. My Libertarian flag waving here to ask big government (actually one human) why he gets to close access because he can’t “control” access at those points. Put in a freaking gate. How much do those cost ? Ok sorry rant over.

Early morning run in the McDowells. Started from Brown TH around 5am. Wanted to do a loop involving the summit. Went in on Upper Ranch Trail. One of the nicer entry points for this TH. Not as direct as some, but much more enjoyable. Then took Wrangler Trail over to Brown Mountain Trail. First time on Brown Mountain. It's a decent climb. There are enough flat sections and a mild enough incline that it is a comfortable run to the top. That cannot be said for the summit section. Short, but steep! Definitely not a running trail. Some nice views from the top. There's a decent drop off from all, but the north side. After the summit I continued on the Brown Mountain Trail going down the north side. Connected briefly to the Upper Ranch Trail and the Brown Ranch Road to get on the Corral Trail. Basically did a loop on the Corral to where it reconnected a little further south on BRR which I then took back to the TH. Temps were nice though a little humid. Nice sunrise with a smattering of clouds adding color to the sky. Only saw 3 bikers and 1 hiker until I neared the end of my hike when encountered a few clusters just starting.

Took it easy this weekend after over-doing it last weekend. Hiked to the summit of Brown's Mountain from the Brown's Ranch Trailhead. Hit the trail around 6:20 so it was getting a little warm as I hiked up, but this is a short and easy hike. I of course got my obligatory 360 photo from the summit:

Also spotted a desert tortoise. Photos to come.

Followed a route from The_Eagle from June '15. Super busy with lots of bikes due to some event from REI. The trails are super smooth and the miles sort of just melt away; even when you are sick. I had to talk myself into knocking out the Jane Rau trail at the end and almost stepped on a rattler while on it.

Nice hike on some trails in the MSPN area with Ryan and Lauren. Saw our first rattler of the year spotted by Lauren in the third hiker position :o Good for Ryan and I it was on its best behavior. Nice morning hike.
