Stayed local because it seemed like the monsoon was getting more active to a trip north might be a bit dicey. Started from the Granite Mtn TH and did trails that I haven't done in nearly a decade or more. Took Powerline #2 to Granite Mtn Loop, back down to Powerline, up Balanced Rock, down Chuckwagon, east on Powerline again, south on Yucca then back to the TH on Turpentine. It was a 12 mile figure-8 of sorts.

Clouds to the east kept the weather cooler to start, then had a bit of shade from Granite Mtn on the west side. Got a little warm on the last mile, but overall pretty decent temps. Made very good time, under 21 minutes for almost every mile. Traffic was light, but steady. Only wildlife was a hawk on a powerline tower early on screeching at me until I took out my camera, and then it took off.

Returned to my favorite running trails. Started at the Fraesfield TH a little after 6:30. I wanted to get a short run in. Did a loop involving Whiskey Bottle-Yucca-Powerline-Chuck Wagon-Granite Mountain Loop And Black Hills Trail. Kind of made the loop as I went, but it turned out great. All the trails were great to run on, but the Yucca Trail was more of a sandy wash at times. Wildlife was minimal...rabbits and chipmunks. Surprisingly only saw 3 people on the trail. (Before I began I went through a group 15 hikers getting ready but I never saw the, on the trail).

1st trip
today's hike was a mash up of a few other haz member ideas
flying_fliver has a summit of fraesfield peak, which according to the northern region map, is the fifth highest:
granite mountain 3526
cholla mountain 3406
brown's mountain 3253
cone mountain 3061
fraesfield mountain 3055
i've been on top of the other four, so thought this one would be fun
have recently enjoyed triplogs from sunray, crazy4az and neilends who have or are trying to complete all the trails up here
first time hiking from fraesfield trailhead
whiskey bottle trail, off trail to the peak, back on whiskey bottle
did a loop of watershed, maverick and vaquero
powerline road to yucca, then back on whiskey bottle
did the full length of whiskey bottle, maverick and yucca
a peak and three new trails made for an interesting hike
fraesfield mountain is easy off trail, only about a quarter mile and 400 feet up
something different, although i like the trails originating from 136th better (terrain with boulders)
will most likely do a trail run on some of the others next time
nice day, pleasant hike in pretty desert :)
*posted my route in case hikebot is missing anything

I spent the mid-afternoon putt-putting around the Northern Preserve. I turned the Whiskey Bottle Loop into a crazy figure eight by incorporating the Yucca Trail and the north leg of the Whiskey Bottle Trail. There wasn't much to see out there, but it was a nice day just to be outside.

ATC Challenge miles to date: 115.6/133
Making progress!! :y:

Brad took kids to church while I neglected family and God to get more miles knocked out for ATC challenge. Did a funky figure 8 loop - actually kind of proud to come up with shortest and most efficient route to gather up little segments.

* Latigo now extends to Whiskey Bottle loop * which is great to connect Brown's Ranch TH with Fraesfield TH.

Powerline #2 not so bad now that I can compare it to West World Trail, LOL. Yucca trail kind of boring and not that many yucca. Dixileta Trail along the Scottsdale National Golf Course very pretty to me. Probably because I like golf and the juxtaposition of desert with chemically-enhanced grass. Not natural or good for the environment, but it makes for pretty desert golf photos.

I helped three groups of people find their way on the trails - that's why I wear my MSC badge and ask anyone staring at a trail sign if they need help. Lots of friendly bikers out there - only one small group of hikers.

Judy went with me as I continue to complete all the trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Parked at Fraesfield Trailhead and headed out on Whiskey Bottle Trail :next: Yucca Trail :next: west on Powerline Rd #2 :next: South on Whiskey Bottle back to parking lot. Easiest 7 miles I've ever hiked plus it had only 1.5 miles of backtracking on the first and last section of Whiskey Bottle.

Have completed 108 miles of 133.4...25.4 miles remain.

About 1:30 we heard a dirt bike driving in the preserve off to the west of us :? A little later we get to 118th St access and there are dirt bike tracks through the desert trashing some plants and going around the metal barricade and then up 118th St trail [-X
